I guess WWKA adding this song was something to keep an eye on. :)

Michael Ray is also the co-writer of Big & Rich's new single.

Sounds like a Classic Country Rock song. Love this. I'm so happy to hear Michael Ray is coming out with his debut single in 2015!!

This was officially sent out to radio today. Source is Play MPE. It's been getting a decent amount of airplay at two stations for at least 2 weeks already. Both stations are in Florida, and since Michael is from Eustis, Florida it's not really a surprise that a couple of Florida stations have been big time early supporters of him. According to AllAccess, "Kiss You In The Morning" received 37 spins at WWKA in Orlando over the last week (up from 36 spins over the previous 7-day period), and 16 spins at WPCV in Lakeland, Florida (holding steady at 16 from the week before as well). www.allaccess.com/mediabase/q/report/leaders/song/RAY+KYIT/format/C1Both stations report to Billboard as well, so with 627k in MB audience, Michael might have had enough to sneak into the Billboard top 60 tonight.

I have a feeling I may end up being in the minority, but I actually like this a lot. Something about it just grabs me.

Yeah this ain't bad. It's nothing ground breaking, but pretty solid. Not sure if it has enough going for it to separate from the pack, but we will see.

Okay, so here's something I can't figure out. On Monday morning, this song had 627k in audience on Mediabase, and that was from the 19th-25th (the Billboard tracking week). Only 2 stations, both in Florida, were playing this. And both of those stations report to Billboard as well.
So how is it that this song only has 351k in Billboard's New & Active section? Billboard numbers are usually a little bit lower than MB numbers, but considering that we're only dealing with 2 stations here--both of which report to MB and BB--how can the audience numbers be that different? Shouldn't they be exactly the same (or very close to it)?

I agree with DM, nothing groundbreaking here but I'm really pulling for this guy and I do like this as a first single choice for him!!
However, I know he cut my buddy Joe Doyle's song "23rd Psalm" (who also wrote Alabama's #1 Song "In Pictures" that Craig Wayne Boyd performed on the Voice this year amongst others) and am hoping that makes his WB Record and becomes a single eventually. THAT song is incredible and a fan favorite.

Eh, this is just okay. Not bad, but not particularly good either. The lyrics are very bro-y and the production is a little too rockish for me though. His voice strikes me as pretty average on this, too, though he does sound a lot better on the "23rd Psalm" audio that gurustu posted, which is also a stronger song by far.

Shouldn't they be exactly the same (or very close to it)? Really late to respond to this, but I had a theory and didn't check it out until just now. I think the difference may go back to something we discussed in the "Something in the Water" thread -- there was a live acoustic version of that song sent out during its final push week, and it appears that it counted toward Mediabase airplay (which tabulates spins digitally but also with human backup) but not Billboard airplay (which relies exclusively on the detection of a digital footprint to count a spin). I went to check whether Michael Ray might have an acoustic version of his single, and sure enough, he does. So my guess is that a considerable amount of his airplay on the two stations came from plays of the acoustic version, and those spins didn't count for the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

^Thanks Dudley! That was really bothering me as I could not figure out why there was any difference in the airplay from MB to BB. But that makes a bunch of sense now.

"Kiss You In The Morning" is the second most added song on MB this week with 50 first week adds.
Pretty good for Michael and Warner Music. I was thinking 40 or so as a prediction.

According to Aircheck weekly looks like Michael gets OTV starting 3/9 I saw that too. I had a sneaky feeling when I saw his song have a higher bullet than I expected yesterday (180 I believe). Not surprising, but seriously, they picked the most bland song possible. I just cannot envision this selling much better than "Take It On Back" did. I didn't like the program to begin with, but they aren't winning me over any time soon with these selections.

Not a terrible choice in my opinion. This one seemed to have a decent amount of buzz to begin with, so I could have seen it being mildly successful before the selection. I like the song fair enough, so we will have to see if the added airplay will boost the sales more.

Wish they'd use the platform to take some chances on outside the box artists and songs.

When you have new Ashley Monroe, Jana Kramer, and even the new Brothers Osborne song and you go with THIS?
Stop. No.

Although I agree with all statements above, I understand the choice. This song had a lot of early momentum and likely would have been a hit regardless of OTV or not. Look at this way, we will get it off the chart sooner because of this ha

Look at this way, we will get it off the chart sooner because of this ha I don't know if I agree with this. It's true that the song did get a high number of adds right out of the gate, but it's entirely possible--and maybe even likely--that it got all those adds simply because many Clear Channel PD's already knew that this was going to "win" the vote for the new OTV selection and therefore they decided to add it as soon as possible. And I also don't know that this would have been a hit even without OTV. Sure, Michael is signed to a powerhouse label (Warner Nashville). But this song is being worked to radio by Warner's new promo team, WEA. The only singles that WEA has worked so far were Dean Alexander's debut "Live A Little" and Josh Abbott Band's label debut "Hang Around", and neither of those songs came within a sniff of the top 40. Obviously I expect the WEA promo team to start having success much like Warner's other two promo teams (WMN and WAR) simply because they are a Warner Nashville imprint, but the truth is that they just haven't had that success yet.

I don't like this at all. It's very underwhelming and the production is awful. Just another typical bro song to me and it does nothing for his voice, at least nothing good. I don't know anything about this guy, but I'm sure he can do way better based on the "23rd Psalm" video that was posted above. So to sum it up, I'll be passing on this song, but will be interested to hear more from this guy.

Just ew @ this being the OTV selection. They're really not helping anybody lately by picking these mundane singles by random artists ("Smoke" and now this). There are a lot better, more buzzworthy choices that they could go with, but they keep choosing to be painfully safe with it. Defeats the whole purpose of something like OTV if you ask me.

Here's an excerpt from The Washington Post article back in August when iHeartMedia's radio president for national programming Tom Poleman explained how "On The Verge" works. (Here)
Let's say that the final nominees came down to, in no order:
Logan Mize - "Can't Get Away From A Good Time" Ashley Monroe - "On To Something Good" Brothers Osborne - "Stay A Little Longer" Cam - "My Mistake" John King - "On Your Lips" Casey James - "Fall Apart" Drake White - "It Feels Good" Old Dominion - "Break Up With Him" Michael Ray - "Kiss You In The Morning"
I left Jana's out since she hasn't gotten an add date yet or been officially sent to radio.
If these selections are made by what programmers are "passionate about", then this program will miss more than it hits. Now obviously this selection is clearly playing it safe with Michael's song fitting right into country radio's wheelhouse for lyrical content and production, but the only silver lining in this program (I still dislike the premise behind it) is that it can break newer artists with impactful songs that can drive buzz and sales, and I'm sorry but IMO, "Kiss You In The Morning" isn't it.

Why Ya Wanna claim Jana Kramer could conceivably be considered an "On the Verge" artist? Because Craig Campbell and Dustin Lynch were after previous hits? And they (well, Dustin, as Craig never had a hit on the level of Why Ya Wanna or Cowboys & Angels) were just as counter to the spirit of the program... It's supposed to be people on the verge of serious radio airplay...Giving an on the verge boost to a name that already received such airplay is, to me, far lamer than pushing an artist with a sound you don't particularly like. I'm not saying I love the choice, but I find it somewhat ironic that there are people complaining about iHeart "playing it safe" but then asking the company to give the OTV boost to an artist that is already established. The goal of the program SHOULD be to find people whom have never received a look from radio.

Okay well we can keep splitting hairs but the point is this song is lame and a lame choice that is doing nothing to further the genre. Period.

She's only had one big hit, and then it was followed up with several middling chart performances. There is no reason why she'd be any less deserving to be chosen for OTV than someone who hasn't had any single releases at all. If anything it would make more sense to pick someone like her or Dustin Lynch because it's proven that they have an audience and the single will actually sell and help the artist, and the investment will actually be worth it.
