A little low for Kelly, but it's expected.

It's on par considering her last two releases. Also just like her last two releases, PBP will have legs.

Was hoping for 100,000... but maybe there is a chance it will uptick, especially with the Fallon promo going viral today :)

Is a #1 debut out of the question?
I was hoping for 100K, but I guess this isn't that surprising. Oh well. It could have been worse.

Not unexpected, but a disappointment for an album this good. Something needs to connect on radio to give PBP the attention it deserves.

Well her other two releases were Q4 releases, so 75-80k is pretty good considering it's March and her lead single hasn't really done as well as her previous lead singles. Hopefully the album will have longevity and go platinum.

But that's a GH album, with only a few new songs. This is brand spankin' new album, and it will only muster 10-15K more first week sales?
Disappointed.

Exactly. I won't get into the "disappointing" or "not disappointing" game, but I will say that the nearest point of comparison (if you need one) is "Stronger." I don't see why a new studio album would be compared to a greatest hits album or a Christmas album (and this isn't the only place doing it - I've seen numerous examples of people treating "Wrapped in Red" as a studio album within her progression)

Streaming is where it's at these days. As someone said, this should sell steadily over the year. She also has a tour coming up and could do one of those bundle deals. Why the hell not.

I don't see why a new studio album would be compared to a greatest hits album or a Christmas album (and this isn't the only place doing it - I've seen numerous examples of people treating "Wrapped in Red" as a studio album within her progression) In Kelly's album thread I said I predicted 70-80k based on how WIR did, because WIR did not have a lead single or promo for its first week. Yes, it was a holiday CD, but it was also a good indicator of what Kelly can expect when she has nothing to fall back on but her core fanbase. For a GH that with only a few new singles (all of which could be downloaded separately, for those who already had the hits), a soft opening is also unsurprising. Piece By Piece has a lead, but Heartbeat Song hasn't been performing very well. It just now reached top 10 on HAC and I'm not even sure if it's cracked the top 20 on pop yet (on Kworb, it hasn't, but I don't know where she is on Mediabase). She has been doing radio and print interviews, but did not appear on US tv for anything until this week...basically the situation is closer to WIR and her GH than it is to Stronger, which was 3 1/2 years ago and a fourth quarter release. Not saying that we fans are excusing it or saying it's great, just that most of us had already predicted this based on how the era got started. Also, reviews have been kind of mixed (many of them downright nonsensical, but that's another quibble for another day) and while that's par for the course, it also means that there is not any overwhelming critical acclaim to make people who are just now hearing that KC has a new album feel like it's a must-buy. Of course, that's where continued promotion and pushing her singles to success can pick up the slack, but since she and RCA somewhat dropped the ball with HS, they've made it harder for themselves than it should be.

^ Well I will definitely admit that HBS - while having a 54 million audience impression - is not exactly the type of song that stands out from the crowd and makes you take notice. Invincible should have been first single.

You might be forgetting that Big Sean sold 167K last week, and his 2nd week totals might be very close to the 85K-100K mark. Which will be close to Kelly's totals.
And of course, we are assuming Kanye will not suddenly drop his album tmrw, as has been rumored.

Invincible should have been first single. Yeah, agreed on Invincible - well, almost any song other than Heartbeat Song, really. Not that I dislike HBS...it could have been a nice third or fourth song, but like you said, it isn't an attention grabber. I haven't looked at the callout scores for the past couple of weeks, but when HBS first showed up it had a decent positive and net positive, but a really low favorite score. I've noticed that most songs with that kind of score tend to have a mediocre performance, I guess because they're not so crappy that radio will refuse it, but not so great that radio feels compelled to spin it. (fourfiveseconds is an exception, but hey - that's Rihanna and she's pushing her shit!)

I was banking on a 65-70% drop for Big Sean, maybe more. And he only sold 139K true albums this week, so even a 50% drop would almost assuredly keep him out of the pure sales race. My guess was along the lines of 40-50K in pure sales and 60-80K in units for Big Sean on next week's chart.

I'm not sure what you were expecting though. I don't think the situation is comparable to Stronger (her last proper album), as not only did the lead single do better but it was also released in late October and had a strong promotional campaign behind it (Dancing With The Stars/The Today Show/Late Night With Jimmy Falon/The View). Given that album sales have continued to decline since then too, 80k is a solid opening. And as Kelly's previous albums have gone, she normally always tend to sell well in the long run.

The fact that 'Heartbeat' can move from the 40s for most of the past 12 months to just about Top 10 on the iTunes USA chart with only some promotion of the song this week indicates to me that it actually has connected with the general public. So, if 'Heartbeat' was promoted in January, it is quite plausible that its sales, radio airplay, and buzz towards to the album would have been significantly greater than what exists today, which could have paid off with bigger album opening numbers. To think by this time during the 'Stronger' era, there were many more televised performances of 'Know' than the two we have had of 'Heartbeat'.

The thing with Heartbeat is that it is a nice enough song to do well with support, but not so nice that it would shoot up on its own. So one thing or the other needed to change - the effort Kelly and RCA put behind the song, or a different song that forces an immediate reaction from people. The grower-then-a-show'er strategy of Stronger doesn't work if you don't help the first song grow...Invincible has more of a show 'er quality than Heartbeat, and I'd argue most of the other songs on the album do too because of their production.

I'm not sure it will smash, either. I do think it will perform better than HBS, esp internationally (Sia songs have fared very well internationally). It might outperform my expectations. Vocals are great.
Run Run Run should be given a shot for 3rd single. These piano/vocals songs are doing well nowadays (All of Me, Someone Like You, etc)

I was referring to the the total televised promotional campaign as of the close of the debut sales week, which included Leno, Ellen, Dancing With The Stars, Today Show, The View, and Fallon (6 total, one of which with a HUGE audience compared to 2 total of 'Heartbeat', none with that audience size). My point was that promotion of the song would have positive influenced its visibility on the singles sales chart and radio, which ultimately would have added significant buzz for the record (and thus, sales).

Y'all are comparing the first week sales from this album to her past two releases? Her past two releases were a GREATEST HITS album and a CHRISTMAS album! No comparison can be done here. This is a brand new full length studio album. Compare the first week sales of this album to Thankful, Breakaway, My December, All I Ever Wanted and Stronger.

Right, because comparing opening weeks for albums released 12, 11, 8, 6, and 4 years ago is, like, WAY more legit!
