Soooo I've gone back and refreshed myself on his debut. I agree with everyone saying it was mishandled. The ~intrigue~ of who he could be just wasn't interesting without a hit song. So they cut their losses and revealed him in an underwhelming way that had a cringe-worthy glitter moment at the end. All of the questions of the "authenticity" of his flamboyance, though, make me a little uncomfortable. I agree he seems annoying and a little try-hard, but maybe this really is him? Idk. I'm all for a gay being actually gay on a public platform. We don't all have to be masc4masc. ETA: We have *two* examples of successful, openly gay pop singers right now. Adam Lambert & Sam Smith. And it's not like Adam's pop career has been anywhere near perfect. I don't think we should be complaining about having too many when we literally have a single-digit number of examples. Hiding him the way they did was very "we don't think you'll play him if you see him" To be fair, they didn't play him and they didn't see him lol

To be fair, they didn't play him and they didn't see him lol I loved Goodbye and honestly thought it would go into the teens at least. Thought of another example: Imagine if they pushed CL's (another Scooter act) first single, but refused to show her and made it a mystery for the general public (not exact, since she's famous as hell around the world, but work with me), and then when they DID reveal her, it was on a performance with an over-exaggerated Asian theme. It would be absolute garbage and torn limb from limb. The only thing Boys Like You has going for it the potential pull off a twist on a doo-wop/Motown girl group song about boys, but with one of the singers being a gay man. That's a cute twist on a musical staple that everyone knows, and is actually kind of clever and natural in a 2015 way.

I haven't seen anyone complain that there are too many. The main complaint is aimed at the label/his management for the way he's been rolled out is essentially "Please welcome, A Gay Singer!" like he's the bearded lady at the circus. Hiding him the way they did was very "we don't think you'll play him if you see him" and ended up being pointless. I just don't see what the narrative was supposed to be post-reveal otherwise. I'll wait to hear more of his stuff, because I'm interested to see songs through his lens, but I can't help compare to another out, loud, and proud act, Scissor Sisters. They never hit CHR success here, but I think they really channeled what they're trying to go for with Who Is Fancy and missing. Mmmmm I see. If that's the way his management is really trying to sell it, then, yeah, that's problematic. It should by no means be a gimmick. What a boring gimmick to have too.

I don't think anyone is complaining that he's coming on too strong with the gay thing. At least, I hope not. It would kind of blow if people still held to the whole "you can be gay but don't throw it in our face" mentality. The problem isn't how he's acting, but rather that it's being made into a big deal and being exploited as a marketing tactic. Edit: annnd I'm late and didn't read. Disregard.

The problem isn't how he's acting, but rather that it's being made into a big deal and being exploited as a marketing tactic. This. It's not that he's gay and there's a problem with him being openly gay or singing about guys. The problem is using that for the shock factor as a marketing gimmick. That's almost more offensive than trying to make him hide being gay, IMO. I mean, imagine that the big reveal was that he was in a wheelchair, would they be sending emails about how awesome it would look to have people dancing in wheelchairs while he sang? Or if he were Arab and they wanted DWTS to have a bunch of bellydancers and camels around him?

That DWTS controversy feels like it was concocted to bring further attention to this song and Who Is Fancy.

That DWTS controversy feels like it was concocted to bring further attention to this song and Who Is Fancy. I doubt it, american tv is pathetic enough to this be totally true. I still remember very well what happened with Adam Lambert in the post AMAs performance outrage, he had a good bunch of problems on tv, i don't remember the tv channel but they didn't have any problem with Chris Brown. It seemed that kissing a guy on tv was way worse than beating your girlfriend. Performances with two male dancers won't be a problem in any western european country, and frankly given the song (and the performers) it totally fits, so it's not something random he (or his label) requested. I'm not a fan of same sex dancing couples, specially on ballroom dance (even when there are dances like tango that perfectly fits a same sex couple) but this is not even the contestants of the show. Anyway in shows like SYTYCD keep asking obviously gay contestants for his girlfriends, so the reaction of the channel is not a surprise. Anyway, i hope they move on from controversies and release the song, a good performance with two popular singers like Ariana and Meghan should helpt to at least put him in the map

Yeah in all these dancing shows its always a male+female pairing, especially if its a slow dancing song. I wish some of the dancers would say they're gay so that they'd stop asking about the "girlfriend" at home watching...

DWTS has a very, very conservative audience. Debuting the song there, and having male partners dancing (which is a sore subject even in ballroom dancing circles), is guaranteed to gin up controversy. It shouldn't be controversial, but it will be, and they know it will get the song headlines.

I'm not a prude, but the amount of shirtlessness on the guys and barely there costumes on the ladies can be a bit much sometimes. I have nothing against a show of skin (have you seen the Argentinian version of DWTS where they do this 'strip dance' where both partners do an erotic striptease where they take off most or all of their clothes by the end of the dance, including underwear in some cases!) and the racier dance moves (some of the dances are like that by design as they are dances of love and passion so naturally that has to be shown to make it accurate). There is a little bit of sometimes unintentional homoeroticism with some of the performances which is unavoidable. But a lot of the banter between judge Bruno Tonioli and some of the male contestants and professionals when they take off their shirt or do a shirtless performance or there is an overt display of sensuality is borderline inappropriate and not quite family friendly. Again, I'm not offended, but watching it and hearing it, I'm thinking, "It's a bit early in the evening for a comment like that." I still remember very well what happened with Adam Lambert in the post AMAs performance outrage, he had a good bunch of problems on tv, i don't remember the tv channel but they didn't have any problem with Chris Brown. It seemed that kissing a guy on tv was way worse than beating your girlfriend. It was on the same ABC network in the U.S. but it was a number of years ago. DWTS has a very, very conservative audience. Debuting the song there, and having male partners dancing (which is a sore subject even in ballroom dancing circles), is guaranteed to gin up controversy. It shouldn't be controversial, but it will be, and they know it will get the song headlines. When certain openly gay male contestants had appeared on the show, this subject came up but they kept the male-female pairings. During a few of the recent dances, they have had two duos perform a group dance and there were 30 or so seconds where two of the male contestants danced together (for their solo sections minus the professionals who were not in the spotlight for those few seconds), but it was just a part of the dance and it didn't seem out of place and there was no issue over that.

Wasn't there a minor dustup a few years back, with one of the judges saying in an interview that he doesn't think same sex duos shouldn't be allowed to dance together in competitions? I can't remember if it was Bruno or Len. It may have also been a Producer. Granted, this is a guest performance and not a competitor, so apples and oranges. Just the ballroom dancing world is very tradition-based, and very reliant on the man/woman "roles" in a dance. It's the foundation of the entire system, basically.

I think it was a producer or a rep from ABC that said it. I couldn't find the article, but I recall reading something about that too. The UK version (called Strictly Come Dancing) was supposed to have a same sex couple dancing together.

And honestly glee did an entire song number of wheelchair choreography and it was great to see them doing something unique and new . I think it would be great if they brought out paralyzed people in wheelchairs for a performance to show that they can still dance too.

I guess I have a different take on this. DWTS isn't too experimental with choreography in general, and they tend to stick to more traditional genres that have always used a male-female pairing. Yes, they have some pretty sexually charged dances, but the choreography itself has always been traditional. I feel like trying to force two guys to dance together would just come off as gimmicky.
Other shows, such as SYTYCD, that explore more experimental styles have been less traditional in their pairings. They actively employ a gay choreographer (Travis Wall) and have had dances about homosexual love stories in the past. I guess what I'm saying is that SYTYCD didn't make the dance about being gay in order to collect some sort of progressive brownie points. Travis simply created a piece of art that called for a male-male pairing, and that was that.
While I'm not denying that America is still uncomfortable with homosexuality, I don't think that DWTS is failing some sort of ethical obligation by not experimenting with the genders of their pairings.
That's just my two cents, anyways.

Now that I'm thinking about it, you're right lol. My wonder is if he was dropped until being picked back up again? He was never on their roster until now (I'm not sure if he was listed as Jake Hagood before I started following them at the top of the year).

Who Is Fancy talking about the song. wonder if this is the outfits for the DWTS's performance. http://instagram.com/p/-XPxefOSkS edit a couple of snippets since it is already out in some countries. both feature Ariana. edit chorus snippets.

I like the sound of the chorus from those! The instrumental sounds like a mix of Little Mix's Love Me Like You and Charlie & Meghan's Marvin Gaye

This is good! I'm not sure about its hit potential, but I guess this could go Top 30 with curiosity. Meghan sounds really good on this and fits well, and then there's Ariana lol. She sounds good, but I'm not sure if she was the best fit for the song. She's definitely going to boost the hit potential though just by having her name on it.

Just listened to the full song, I really like it! I think it would've suited spring/summer more, but I guess Uptown Funk kind of did as well and it was released around now.
