The reviews are fairly negative to mixed. The last time I remember this kind of a reaction to a Bond theme was Sheryl Crow's.

The Guardian's review pretty much summed up my feelings about the song.
It instantly gets my back up when any artist boasts how little time they spent writing a song/album.

Gorgeous instrumental... but he is so overrated as a singer IMO. I'm not digging his vocal at all, it sounds like he's struggling. Agreed. Those falsetto parts are painful to get through.

Yeah, the falsetto in the chorus is excruciating, and I don't know why since I usually like his falsetto. That part of the chorus seems strangely like it's almost part of another song too. Weird. Overall this is boring, and this is coming from someone who enjoys every single track on In the Lonely Hour. So I'm certainly not opposed to his balladry style.

According to Official Charts his song is #1 and is the 1st #1 Bond theme.

Can't believe this did over Skyfall. Did that one have actual competition?

Can't believe this did over Skyfall. Did that one have actual competition? I'm not that surprised. First is a question of timing, second he has a way better record at singles than Adele (who surprisingly only has one number one, and she needed a bombastic performance to go there, this is Sam's fith number one on UK). What it's surprising is the fact that this is the first Bond number one. In UK Bond songs are usually popular so i thought there were at least a couple of number ones in the past. By the way, i know it's unpopular opinion but i think this is quite good, classical and different at the same time. And i doubt it will be popular between X factor contestants (i doubt there's much people who can pull this live). In my opinion it's a good soundtrack, but by any means a pop song. It will do well on AC (in fact it's doing already well on AC) but nothing on the rest of charts

Can't believe this did over Skyfall. Did that one have actual competition? Skyfall was released on a Friday and had its peak sales split between two weeks. Its competition was Diamonds, Gangnam Style and Don't You Worry Child; which were all pretty massive hits in the UK. If Skyfall had a full week of sales, it would've likely debuted at #1.

Sam sold 70,000 over 7 days to debut at no 1. Adele sold 84,000 in 2 days to debut at no 4, before peaking at no 2.
As noted previously, Skyfall was released on a Friday (When the UK tracking week was Sunday - Saturday), thus meaning her first-week sales were split between two "chart weeks". It's a bit unfortunate that Adele missed out on this bit of history simply because of the mid-week release. Adele's UK label have never really cared about chasing no. 1 singles though, otherwise they would have released it on the standard release day.

I love this song. And I'm not Sam Smith's biggest fan by a long stretch. It's so different from what's on radio right now and I am really feeling the classic and dramatic feel. I have no delusions that this will do well, but I will be spinning it relentlessly this fall.
My favorite Sam Smith track? I think so.

And is that a good thing? I don't get it. Yes, it's a good thing, specially if you think the song is bad. Because if the song is bad at least he didn't spend that much time writting it. Generally singers say such things when they want people to know they were inspired while they wrote the song, i remember Charlie Puth saying the same about Marving Gaye, of course the opinion are going to vary from he is really good for writting such great song in so little time to he should have spend a little more time writting it for his own good. Anyway, James Bond films generally generate such over the top reactions (i still remember the cruel comments about Daniel Craig) that is frankly laughable

Just listened to this, kind of a snoozefest. Adele's hook was better.

And is that a good thing? I don't get it. It appears that it was just a detail that they threw in. As an aside, a short amount of time spent on the writing of a song's lyrics doesn't necessarily mean it was rushed and phoned in. Sometimes the inspiration hits at the right moment and you can get it all out there real quick and then fix it up a bit. It has been reported in some publications that Deborah Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie wrote the rap section of their groundbreaking #1 hit "Rapture" in less than 20 minutes as they had just the verses and the chorus bits and they had always wanted to do a rap song and this ended up being it. The basic idea was there and it just poured out as they were writing it. It has also been said that they had to write the rap so quickly because they had to show this song to their label that day and they hadn't finished! Back to the Bond song. Adele reportedly spent only 10 minutes writing "Skyfall".

Entered in the hot AC chart at 48, but its natural territory is AC, were it's smashing (except today's update) and it's getting nearer top 20

Pretty decent Bond theme song but it's definitely not a song I want to hear on my HotAC station.

I was expecting this song to be much worse just because of the reviews. Not terrible except for the forced high parts of the songs that he seems unable to reach comfortably.

Why did this song jump so much on ITunes? Was the movie released?
This is SO random but when I previewed this on ITunes the verse they played reminded me of Michael Jackson's "Earth Song".

I forgot this was out! Was it sent to Pop Radio? Frankly, i don't think he has any intention to promote it. They did that new album release (with new songs) but it doesn't seem he is going to pomote it either. It's no surprise, it's clearly a soundtrack song (i think it's way better than reviews make appear) and generally Bond themes are just variations of the original and radio doesn't seem interested in it (if Adele didn't went further i think nobody can do it, unless it release a more poppy song, and that's not the case here). The song did its job (it's still doing very well on UK) and that's all I think Sam will dissapear for a while till the release of his second album or maybe he appears before that with a collaboration, he said he felt a little overexpossed, and for the type of singer he is being in the background for a while will always benefit him

Not to mention the Adele comparisons all over again, just in double, with Adele actually being active again.
