That's good stuff. Edit: actually the song is the first in a four part video series that RS Country will be premeiring leading up to the release of Black. Wow! Dierks knocked it out of the park with that track.

There's no guarantee that "I'll Be The Moon" will be a single. Dierks and Maren are on competing labels (Dierks on UMG/Capitol, Maren on Sony/Columbia), so Capitol would have to get permission from Columbia in order to release the song as a radio single.

That's literally exactly what I just said, lol. Saying "there's no guarantee it will be a single" implies that we don't know whether or not it will be a single.

I am dismayed at how quickly this has moved up the charts vs a song like "Riser". I intensely dislike this song, and I am surprised that there are apparently so many people who do like it. Yech!

You can't really be that surprised that a lead single that's a fluffy radio song that sounds like what country radio is inclined to spin in high rotation in the present environment moved up quickly while a fourth single (ignoring BIK's quick come-and-go) something deeper, slower, and just less radio-ready in general went up the charts much less quickly? I can understand not liking it (I'm not a fan, either), but this had all the makings of being a "Drunk on a Plane" Part II type of hit (though admittedly far less clever and original and "good" imo) and it's not hard to see why it's fared well while "Riser" did not.

Really big Dierks fan here but I can't stand Somewhere. Drunk on a Plane was masterpiece. It was fun but I don't know it just worked. Somewhere just makes me feel sad for the guy out there boozin' it up and doesn't know where he is. Anyway... thanks for sharing this. I'm one of those Dierks fans who loved Bourbon In Kentucky and we know what didn't happen with that one!

"What The Hell Did I Say" is kind of disappointing honestly, and "I'll Be The Moon" didn't blow me away either. I'm starting to get a bit concerned here.

The video for What the Hell is here. It's grown on me after a couple listens, and especially watching the video. It's been stuck in my head most of the day. I just don't think the tempo or something suits his vocal style. I feel like there's a bit of a disconnect. I'm trying not to judge it too harshly without hearing it in the context of the album, though. As an artist he takes the track listing very seriously so it may click in that context. I don't love it immediately like I did with I'll Be the Moon but I don't hate it, either.

I wish it had one more verse or just something to make it a tiny bit better, but I have been playing it all day and loving it.

matty005 I have no qualms with the lyrics at all, I think it's clever, too. There's just something that isn't quite clicking for me just yet. But like I said, I like it, I just don't LOVE it.

I absolutely love "I'll be the moon", and while "What the hell did I say" seems a bit strange in tempo/the way Dierks sings it, I like it too. I think this will be a good album

Wanted to like it, think the line about telling her Elvis will marry them in Vegas was cute but the other lines about Louis Vuitton and stuff, I kept thinking what the heck, how is that in a Dierks song??? Video didn't help for me. I've never loved a whole Dierks album in its entirety so I'm not worried, just bummed WTHDIS is another track I can't get into.

"Somewhere On A Beach" leaps from #4 to #1 on Billboard Hot Country Songs this week!!!! Beat me by seconds, lol. Never ever thought I'd see him at #1 on that chart again, especially after DOAP couldn't get the job done.

"Somewhere On A Beach" leaps from #4 to #1 on Billboard Hot Country Songs this week!!!! Impressive!! I'm amazed at how big this song has gotten. Man though it must've been close between Dierks and Tim McGraw regardless I do like the kind of satirical sense this song has and it's grown on me significantly. Hey carriekins what caused Dierks to be blocked as "Drunk On A Plane" and "Bartender" were in my opinion the songs of the summer of 2014 and yet neither one hit #1 on the mongrel chart, I seriously can't recall what song possibly blocked either one.

Regardless I tend to refer to 2014 as country music last hurrah of hit songs since well 2015 country music was a basic non prescence (4 songs in the Year-End Hot 100 that's pathetic).

Yeah Sam managed to sneak in once Lady A, Dierks, Luke, FGL, Kenny, and Jason were in freefall on AirPlay. I think he got it for two weeks than Carrie Underwood Something In The Water managed to reach the top.

I just remember being dumbfounded that DOAP was selling upwards of 80k a week and only got as high as #3 on HCS.

Excellent sales and wide appeal in the radio. This song to me has grown a lot. This song has grown on me also. In much the same way as a stye, boil, or perhaps a sebaceous cyst: it keeps getting bigger, more painful, and harder to ignore.

Add me to the list of those who really dislike this song, but I forgave Tim for 'Truck Yeah' so I can certainly do likewise for an artist whom I still have a lot of trust in.

After some "Freedom" and "I'll Be the Moon"-driven optimism, I'm starting to drift toward dm2081's camp of concern re: Black, especially after seeing that live performance of "Black" (thanks Kentucky25). I know early live performances of new material can be rough (and this one really was), but I really didn't hear much that was interesting in the lyrics or construction of the song. For a song that Dierks has suggested is representative of an album that he characterized as being about the "deeper" aspects of long-term love as compared to new love, I'm not really hearing anything particularly rich or loaded from the song. Even the song's many, many nods to U2 (bridge, vocal approach, guitar work, melody) merely seem like extensions of a sound that Dierks explored on Riser, not something with the surprise factor Dierks seemed to allude to in that EW interview. But I don't know how much of the issue for me is just reconciling my expectations from the pre-album press with the music that we've heard so far. "I'll Be the Moon" is a perfectly solid song, very much in Dierks' vocal and emotional wheelhouse, and he delivers the required angst, shame and lack thereof. "What the Hell Did I Say?" is all right, but I rolled my eyes at the brand-dropping pre-chorus and there are parts of the song where I don't feel like Dierks is able to impose his phrasing. Its chorus, though, feels like classic Dierks, and I do think that the song does a much better job of carrying over "Drunk on a Plane"'s sheepish humor than "Somewhere on the Beach," perhaps not surprisingly because "Drunk on a Plane" & "What the Hell Did I Say?" share two songwriters. Also to be fair, I did note rsmatto's comments that while the front half of the Black, "I'll Be the Moon" aside, might not seem particularly fresh, the rest of the album has a "different sonic texture" and that his overall impression of Black is that it is "unlike anything he's ever released before." I'm just starting to wonder if from my point of view that is going to turn out to be a "for better or worse"-type of thing. And as I await a song that feels significant to emerge from Black, I'm wondering if I should recalibrate my expectations and try to understand and appreciate anew that Riser was a standalone project that Dierks needed as much as anything else as he tried to cope with his father's passing, not necessarily the blueprint for Dierks' idea of adult music going forward.
