Oh, I think you're right on in your assessment here of what the song is meant to convey. But to dredge up the "Drunk on a Plane" comparison again, the big difference is self-awareness. The guy in "Drunk on a Plane" is acting the fool and he knows it, and both the lyrics and Dierks' performance deliver that combination of bitterness and self-loathing and sarcasm and assiness and hurt and embarrassment darn near perfectly. But "Somewhere on a Beach" is just straight-up, on-the-nose nyah-nyah bitterness minus any of the hurt or regret or embarrassment that would give it dimension, and the (lack of) melody and lack of rhythmic variation give Dierks no room to add any personality to the performance. Everything about "Somewhere on a Beach" is just underdeveloped, which is why I find its immaturity so incredibly unappealing while I defend "Drunk on a Plane" to this day as a genuinely clever, entertaining song. I agree that "Drunk On A Plane" is the far superior song, but again, I think its just based on preference. The character in DOAP is more mature as you said, but I think they are meant to portray separate characters. I imagine Hank Moody (David Duchovny from Californication) as the main character in DOAP whereas I imagine a Charlie Sheen wannabe in "Somewhere on a Beach" (maybe Justin Beiber? lol). I can see how the character in this one can turn some people off, but for me I can still appreciate it much like I enjoy Frank Underwood in House of Cards and Walter White in Breaking Bad. I subjectively look at them as being bad apples, but still appreciate their art if that makes sense. Right, I don't need to like or approve of a character to enjoy him/her in an entertainment context, either -- but it really does come down to artistic presentation, as you suggest. And that's largely where "Somewhere on a Beach" fails for me -- it's over-broad and single-dimensional. I mean, I've defended songs with unrepentant portrayals of murderesses on this board, not because I approve of their actions but because I think there is larger, valuable commentary going on in those songs. The person depicted in the Dixie Chicks' "Top of the World" is a cold, heartless person, but that song is one of my absolute favorites of all time because it is such an unflinching look at such a person and how s/he affected the people around him/her. Less darkly, Miranda Lambert is kind of a petty brat on "Only Prettier," but because I appreciate the wit of some of the lines in the song, I mostly don't mind. For all of its flaws, "Fix" at least has a throwback soulful/funky flow to it, a catchy rhythmic variation and I think it has a much more appealing melody (such as it is) than "Somewhere on a Beach" does. I wanna know what the heck you're listening to, because I just hear a completely tuneless mess that can't make up its mind what it's trying to be, and throwing random contemporary R&B elements around at complete random. All I hear is a weaksauce lead singer, a clusterf**k of randomness, Joey Moi's typical loud drumbeats and screechy guitars, and a Sarah Buxton so autotuned that I can't even tell that's her. What I hear is a song that was originally intended to be a throwback soul song, sung and produced poorly (particularly with elements shoehorned in to sound like something that would work on the contemporary "country" format), but whose rhythmic elements and vocal riffs (all baked in, of course -- I don't think that Chris Lane has an original bone in his body) offset its melodic limitations. So in the end, I find "Fix" to be merely eye roll-inducing, sleazy and ineffective, whereas "Somewhere on a Beach" is flat-out intolerable as far as I'm concerned, both musically and lyrically. I honestly don't read this song as douchey or immature or bratty or whatever. Perhaps it is the accumulated effect of years of overt or casual bro misogyny, but any song that treats a woman as nothing more than an empty sex trophy without any offsets to acknowledge the narrator's limitations is a non-starter for me these days. Songs like this are part of a damaging culture that has made country radio and a lot of country concerts less welcoming environments to female artists and female fans, and it's part of an overall demeaning culture that has proven dangerous to women.

And while I can see that, I don't often read songs as being misogynistic simply because they call a woman hot or sexy, even if they don't necessarily say anything more about the woman. At least in a song like this, I find that there is a context that, to my ears, draws attention away from any objectification. Calling the woman sexy is not the entire point of this song. Whereas in a song like, say, "Ready Set Roll", the whole song is "get your ass in my truck so I can introduce you to my penis, bitch", with nothing more going for it than that. Add to that the extremely hokey production and Chase's abrasive singing, and THAT is a song I can see as just sleazy objectification and nothing more.

I don't think that there's context that in any way redeems "She's got a body and she's naughty." In addition to being embarrassingly written, that lyric reduces of the woman in the chorus to what she can do sexually for a man -- the only "value" ascribed to her is that she services the narrator sexually and thereby becomes a vehicle for putting down his ex as a physical and sexual specimen. I don't see misogyny simply in calling a woman "hot" or "sexy," either, but I think that it couldn't be clearer in the point of view of this song. If anything, the revenge "context" makes it worse, not better.

I think that for me some of it is also who the artist is. I don't think Dierks intended for anything misogynistic here so I cut him more slack than I would Chase Rice or Jason Aldean. I can see how you read the song, however.

"Black" better be the next single (now available on iTunes). I think it's a great song, but I feel like they need to release something with more tempo for summer. Radio PDs are already complaining about the slower tempo songs from the format's stars, and his last few singles (Say You Do, Riser, and SOAB) have all been slower tempo songs. Black would make a killer single in winter, I think.

I thought that was him appeasing radio so he could release something meatier next.

Yes, but PDs have also been on record as saying it's one of those slower tempo songs that makes it difficult to program around. "Freedom" would provide more meat as well as the tempo.

Did they annunced the second single? Or not yet? Not yet. Edited to add: I do expect a quick announcement; Dierks plays the Today Show Concert Series 5/27 on album release day. I could see a deal similar to what Cole had with hourly spins of the new single in conjunction with album release and Today Show performance.

Keeping my fingers crossed for "Black"... It sounds like it's between Freedom and What the Hell for single two according to a source in his camp. Team Freedom.

Dierks is also on Fallon on Thursday, The Today Show summer concert series Friday, and CMT pop up concert Saturday. Go big or go home!

I just listened to "Freedom" on youtube and I like it a lot. I don't mind "What The Hell Did I Say" but I would much prefer "Freedom" as the second single.

Assuming single two gets an hourly deal, wouldn't it be a previously unheard song? So that would point to Freedom.
The songs from Black he's performing on the tour are SOAB, Freedom, WTH, and Black. So it's among those, and likely a new, previously unreleased song.
I am thinking way too hard about this, haha

I doubt it's "Black" or "What The Hell Did I Say". I have to think a Friday debut is coming and that would definitely mean an unheard song.

I just started coming around to this song recently, and I actually like it. I also just watched the video for the first time. Anyone know the meaning of the guy throwing the pill bottle into the fire at the end? I'm assuming it was supposed to be antidepressants?
