The director and the producer have been flooded with questions about them selling the video and they haven't denied it. It is Sundance Channel, though. This is a still from the video: Didn't notice that the first time. Sundance Channel became SundanceTV; I assumed they'd use that in the intro but it may have been before the change. If that's the case then the director/producer are playing dumb, but their tweets lead me to believe they didn't sell full rights to Sundance. The way films are picked up by major production companies that debut at Sundance leads me to believe that may be the case, but we probably won't know for sure either way. Still doesn't change the fact that Melina using the footage without the consent of the director is pretty tasteless. It may feel tasteless, but legally Melina's in the right apparently. You are right, we won't know for sure what happened just because they are not confirming or denying anything after they threw it out there. And it now turns out they were hired to shoot this documentary by Sundance anyway. So, mess.

This song makes me laugh when I play it. It's so silly. I'm not surprised Swae Lee wrote this because it definitely reminds me of a female Rae Sremmurd.

I wish Bey wouldn't lean her head out of the car with those long braids - it's really unsafe!
Also, this is hot. I don't understand you people.

Love this. I get the comparisons to 7/11, but I thought this was way better on every level (especially the video). Is she really playing this at the super bowl though? Gonna be a lot of angry old white people.

Reminds me when I was younger and I had a piece of string tied around my wrist and it was hanging out the window and I got a lecture about it. lol

Yasss! I love how ratchet this song is. I was hoping we would get some ratchet Beyonce this time around and we did. Imagine if she does this at the Superbowl halftime show...people will be throwing their Salvation Army weaves out their windows and humping their swap-meet furniture. This is going to be hot! I can't wait to go to a club so I can tear off my shirt and ho dance to this!

I get certain undercurrents from you guys whenever Beyoncé (or Rihanna) doesn't release something with pop sensibilities. I see the same posters who trash songs like this and 7/11 on their knees slurping up mediocre, pop nonsense as if it were gold standard sent from above. Riding the waves of popular sound is ok only if it blends into your idea of the current pop landscape. Who cares if something may sound "dated" in the future. 98% of music will. Is that something that's necessarily bad? Maybe, in my case really disliked their urban releases. I don't think Run the world or Birthday cake are good songs at all. And well, this is the pop forum so maybe in the urban forum that type of songs are better received. And dated is something important when you want to do timeless songs, not my idea, just citing Rihanna (curiously since she said that she only released songs with a very short time expiration date). It happened the opposite with Whitney Houston back in the day, she was critizied for release only pure pop songs, but when she let urban and r&b influences be more notorious in her songs her songs were still enjoyable for her pop fans

Is that something that's necessarily bad?Do you mean racist undercurrents? Racist? Eh. But it is a definite trend in this forum. The complete and utter devaluation of anything that is Urban and black. And not just this board, it's something I've been seeing my entire life, ever since hip-hop and rap started gaining ground in the late 80's and early 90's. It's vile, it's trash, it's not music. If you don't like the lyrics, the melody, the production, the genre, think it's gimmicky, it's not your bag, that's fine. But I'm not writing off an entire genre of music as garbage just because I don't like it. I'm not a fan of country or death metal, but I don't go around saying it's "not music." And this post isn't necessarily directed at you, I'm just answering your question and why it's sometimes frustrating for R&B/Urban fans around here.

Hmmm. I'm gonna say that I think this song is... okay. This is the type of song that if I hear in the club Imma twerk to but I'm not gonna be happy that it's Beyonce making this type of song again. I think my big problem with this is that 1. it's such a retread of what she's been doing with this sound and I'm not a huge fan of it (I need more melody, BUT the rhythm in this song is hot) and 2. why release this as the lead single? I think I'd be happier with this if it was thrown somewhere in the album so I could get a kick out of it as a one-off type song but for her to make ANOTHER song and video with this "yas slay Queen B" vibe is a little off-putting to me. I need my melody back Beyonce!! It's not a bad song per-se but the lyrics are too trite for me. I'll get buckwild to it but this album better be a MASTERPIECE girl.
and before someone tries to come at me and say I just want pop Beyonce- that is just so NOT true. I LOVE urban music but you will never see me support an artist that doesn't evolve with sound/themes. She's been there done that with this since 2013. "Countdown" is that urban jam honey. Or half of "B'day" (Upgrade you anyone??) Everyone's talking about how she's empowering with this track but how about those classy and empowering lines from Upgrade you "I can do for you what Martin did for the people, ran by the men but the women keep the tempo!" Giving me black power and women power, #yas. And NOT talking about an orgy at Red Lobster. (which again, would be fine if it was an album track for fun but must we give a song like this so much attention as a lead single?)

I am just bored with Beyonce's musical output lately. Her last cd wore off me surprisingly fast, I feel like I have seen this video and heard this song a million times before. I guess its wrong to expect her to be a trailblazer all the time and I am not expecting anything that will change the face of music forever or anything. I am just...kind of bored. Like, I have seen it before and better even from her. She is, hands down, one of the best performers out there though so I am sure the performance will be great. I just wish she would hook up with a better team to make her music as good as it could be.

YAAAAAAASSSSSS!!!!!
So much better than 7/11. King B can do what she wants and stop catering to white American for acceptance.
EDIT: Also I'm not worried about the album. We got PLENTY of timeless classics on Self-Titled: Blow, No Angel, Yonce/Partition, XO, Drunk in Love, Haunted, Flawless So I'm sure we'll get that again. Not everything can be timeless magic *coughcough*7/11*coughcough*

I guess it's a song made for a very specific audience. The video was posted on a major news site here in my country and the comments there are just not positive. For example: "Catastrophe." and "Not listenable."
So it's not just about catering to white Americans, it's about catering to white people in general.

Riding the waves of popular sound is ok only if it blends into your idea of the current pop landscape. Who cares if something may sound "dated" in the future. 98% of music will. Is that something that's necessarily bad?Do you mean racist undercurrents? That type of thinking is exactly why her discography has held up so badly. I equate this to the level of Bro country. I know a lot of people disagree, but, it just feels like there's no musical creativity in it, no melody, just talking about being queen on a random montage of stupid sounds. It doesn't even feel "different", it's in the same vein as something like Stupid Hoe. Do people in the US dance to stuff like this in the clubs??? The primary undercurrents I was addressing were more along the lines of classist undercurrents, but there is some race aspect there as well. How her discography holds up is subjective. The only album where I feel like that is a valid complaint is IASF. I just feel like it's a lazy criticism to try to justify why you don't like something. I just don't see why something has to aim to be "timeless" for it to have some value. You guys are hearing one song. A single song. We have no idea how the entire album sounds. Yet, we're so sure that she's chasing trends, and the album will not be remembered in the future. From one song. One song. So, this raises the question. Can a contemporary artist dabble in contemporary sounds or no? Or can a contemporary artist do that only when it aligns with what you personally value in contemporary music? And yes. People in the US dance to stuff like this in the club.

Beyoncé is probably one of the greatest performers ever so I'm sure it'll be great whatever she does later, but this song/video just bored me. Like, I lost interest halfway through and had to force myself to finish it.
Come on B, where is the next Single Ladies or Crazy In Love?!

it's about catering to white people in general. Not exactly. I don't think the international consensus on this will be positive because of race, which does not inherently determine taste in music, by the way; but then NA is the only territory to pay her dust anyway so I can't say I blame her for conforming to predomenantly Western trends.

Trying to insinuate people who don't like this are motivated by racism is so 2016 it hurts.

This is actually really good! Still much prefer the direction XO/Pretty Hurts were going in, but compared to 7/11, this is good Has completely worn off me already.

IMO, it's a stronger, more fun song than Drunk In Love (which is the only song I skip on self-titled), 7/11, and Run The World (Girls). Yet people on Pulse and in America at large came all over DIL like it was the second coming.

Only listened to it once, but didn't like it at all. From the last album, my favorite of the singles was "XO."

This shouldn't be in Pop. I doubt this will even see a Pop adds date. This is purely Urban.

Yet people on Pulse and in America at large came all over DIL like it was the second coming. It was though. That song had everything: melody, progressive production, multiple vocal styles, swag etc. It sums up Bey's versatile talents in a way no other song of hers does.
