Great debut, I loved Pillowtalk but I think this is just as good.
I can hear the 70s glam rock inspiration but it also reminds me of Oasis.

^ Mostly because the opening piano made me think of Don't Look Back In Anger. Yeah maybe this comparison was kind of random but it does have a Britpop feel to it.

So now we know where 1D's classic rock direction came from

Bit of a snoozefest Definitely hear a lot of Oasis in there especially Stop Crying Your Heart Out. Bit of Bowie too.

I stayed up to hear the first play on BBC Radio 1 (plus 2 hours of Harry talking between songs he chose to be played). Sign of the Times is now on Harry's Vevo ( www.youtube.com/HarryStylesVEVO), Spotify, Harry's website ( www.hstyles.co.uk), iTunes etc. Someone said it's already #1 iTunes UK (it's about 9:21AM UK time, 4:21AM East coast US). Here it is (at HarryStylesVEVO on Youtube) - I love it: Lyrics here: genius.com/Harry-styles-sign-of-the-times-lyricsEDIT: Now 10:47AM UK time (5:47 Eastern US) and someone said Sign of the Times is now iTunes #1 in 46 countries.

I will be very happy if it turns out to be a hit.

WOW really? #1 at iTunes US at 6:29AM Eastern time! Impressive. If this is correct, was #1 at least 45 minutes ago when this was posted on Twitter - #1 in 46 countries including US before 6AM Eastern: I hope he does great with the song and album. Look what washed up - a nice pic from Spotify. I wonder if his water theme was in part inspired by being in Nolan's Dunkirk. Also - that suit looks a lot like the ones Sexton of Savile Row posted briefly on Instagram as suits a young man would be picking up and might even be used on stage.

This is the first 1D related track I've liked. It sounds like something that would be massive in the UK and do little in the US though (if it weren't for the 1D ties).

But the end (to me) sounds a lot like Aerosmith and Journey, both of which are well-loved in US. The main part of it is more Bowie-like.

This is an ok song but his team hyped it too much. They were acting like he had reinvented the wheel. TBH hes pretty much doing the same thing they did at the end of 1D, music inspired by old pop and rock.

The first reviews in the UK aren't very good, Telegraph calls it boring and Independent gives it a pretty bad review and even compares him unfavourably to Zayns solo material. But i am sure his massive 1D fanbase will come through for him.

That being said, this is a very solid debut from him.

There was the TV ad during The Voice that didn't even have Harry's name nor the name of the song. The artwork and song title were were posted by Harry and his website opened with just the graphic and a signup. And Harry's mom, sister, and producer friend Ben Winston tweeted the artwork and song name. A few people who got to hear it early tweeted about it. And SNL/Fallon tweeted about the April 15 appearance. IMO everything else was the radio stations that would be playing it, and the media repeating everything.

There really should be a radio edit that shortens the intro though. It bored me when I first heard it, the song doesn't really kick off until the 1 minute mark. I like the fact that this intro is here, but it's too long for a song that is supposed to be played on mainstream pop radio.

But i am sure his massive 1D fanbase will come through for him. Reviewers don't predict hits. I was no fan of 1D (only liked two of their songs: Night Changes and Story of My Life) and wasn't really interested in this song, but I just heard it half an hour ago, and then I heard it 5 more times in a row. What a fantastic song and awesome vocal performance. Also, while it is really an old school stadium rock ballad, it sounds like NOTHING else in the charts, so it will really stand out. I hope it is absolutely massive.

I think his voice sounds great The big unknown was the song and I really like it. I'm one of Harry's older fans (over 50). I grew up on music of the 70's, 80's 90's, so I am really happy with this song. I can't wait to hear the album.

That being said, this is a very solid debut from him. See what you are saying and obviously it works if you wanna create instant buzz. But the comparisons with Bowie and Prince wasn't a good idea IMO. If you are going in with those expectations of something highly original you're going to be disappointed. This almost sounds like an album cut from 1Ds last album with better vocals. It would be more surprising if he had released a dance track. Everybody was expecting him to do sorta mainstream dad rock.

So far on his Youtube, less than 1% thumbs down. 225270 vs 1791 for over 700K views.

I'm glad he went in a completely different direction, this sound suits his style better IMO. He was never going to pull off that angsty yet comatose JT shtick that Zayn is going for.
It's solid, not sure how it will work at radio, but glad he took the risk. The song sets itself up for launch, but never quite takes off for me. I kept waiting for that moment or big payoff, but it never came.
