This is the first 1D related track I've liked. It sounds like something that would be massive in the UK and do little in the US though (if it weren't for the 1D ties). But the end (to me) sounds a lot like Aerosmith and Journey, both of which are well-loved in US. The main part of it is more Bowie-like. Reminds me of Bowie, Oasis, and Robbie Williams. It's like 70's Brit rock mixed with late 90's/early 00's Brit rock.

Why? I think Niall will have some interesting stuff. Niall wrote Temporary Fix, he's a good guitar player, good singer. Niall's future tracks interest me second to Harry's. I don't care for urban type R&B or DJ-type dance music.

It's a pretty mediocre pastiche of David Bowie, sonically and lyrically.
There's nothing wrong with it, but its just kind of there.
And a 5+ minute long track is going to have a hard time at radio without an edit.

Someone on twitter is saying...
Harry broke Adele's record for the fastest song to reach #1 on US iTunes. It has 90% lead on the charts. It took Adele 50 minutes to reach the #1 position, and it only took Harry 19 minutes!
I have no verification of that.

The first reviews in the UK aren't very good, Telegraph calls it boring and Independent gives it a pretty bad review and even compares him unfavourably to Zayns solo material. But i am sure his massive 1D fanbase will come through for him. Reviewers don't predict hits. I was no fan of 1D (only liked two of their songs: Night Changes and Story of My Life) and wasn't really interested in this song, but I just heard it half an hour ago, and then I heard it 5 more times in a row. What a fantastic song and awesome vocal performance. Also, while it is really an old school stadium rock ballad, it sounds like NOTHING else in the charts, so it will really stand out. I hope it is absolutely massive. Of course they don't predict hits Ed Sheeran got a lot of bad reviews in the UK and that didn't hurt him. Harrys has such a big fan base gonna sell no matter what he puts out. Like he could literally fart over some beats and his fans would buy it. Same with all those 1D boys. If it sounds like nothing else in the charts right now because everything is EDM at the moment, yeah i agree the vocal performance is good, IMO the songwriting including the lyrics aren't anything amazing. Its sounds like a pastiche of loads of old school pop rock IMO,its competent but nothing mind-blowing.

This is incredibly solid. I'm impressed.
This doesn't drag on for a 6 minute song either. It felt like 4 to me.

So, this has apparently sold over 100k already in the US...
Could this beat Hello?

So, this has apparently sold over 100k already in the US... Could this beat Hello? Someone on twitter said he beat Adele's speed record for getting #1 on US iTunes (supposedly 19 minutes versus Adele's 50 minutes). And someone in the comments on Billboard said he sold 144K so far in US? But sales are often hot up front for hot idols and a good number of US fans were up all night (<- ironic - name of 1st 1D album).

It sounds like a great song, but lacks melody, which was strong part of ZaynΒ΄s debut single, so for me it is trying hard, but finishing mediocre and although his vocals are good, there is no wisdom behind it, but what you expect from a boyband member whose only adult life experience has been mmmm being in a boyband. Not for me.

I can't see this doing super well in the US. Maybe a few weeks in the top 10 of the hot 100 and a #15 peak on pop radio. With that said, I love what he was going for with the song. It doesn't quite reach where it could have but the idea is there and I think it sounds quite good! Should be huge everywhere else though.

Seen on twitter: Sign of the Times is #1 on iTunes in 81 countries. Also saw this: London Tube escalator w/ SOTT on all screens It sounds like a great song, but lacks melody, which was strong part of ZaynΒ΄s debut single, so for me it is trying hard, but finishing mediocre and although his vocals are good, there is no wisdom behind it, but what you expect from a boyband member whose only adult life experience has been mmmm being in a boyband. Not for me. In old-time fiddle music it's what we call a drooler. It is mesmerizing. I listen to Sign of the Times and it's over too soon. I want more.

This songs lead on iTunes is insane. It's a solid track, too. Hope it can do well on radio! The end reminds me a ton of "Purple Rain".

I can appreciate that he created something timeless (it could have come out 40 years ago, but probably won't sound dated 20 years from now) but it's kind of...boring. In particular it takes a LONG time to get going. The hook is subtle as hell but something I can imagine sneaking up on you with repeated listens.
If this debuts at #1 on the Hot 100 (very possible) I could radio latching on to this more than we'd expect though.

I watched reaction videos and people start singing along on that bridge. It does take a long time to get to the bridge.
--- A couple of quotes from Harry about shooting the music video suspended by cable from a helicopter over the Scotland coast:
"I was very high. Uh, I couldnβt wait to get down for all of those pictures.β "Iβm struggling to remember why I agreed to do it. But, yeah it was really intense." - Harry on filming the video for Sign of the Times

I can't imagine him beating the "Hello" record. He may have a stronger/quicker lead than Adele had but sales have crashed since then. And he'll be more frontloaded. I'm expecting 450k. I would think that'll be more than enough for a #1 debut assuming curiosity-airplay (perhaps an hourly deal?) and streams.
I'll give it more listens. It didn't blow me away but it was nice.

Super boring. :( I might get into it later though. This. It could grow on me I guess. Anything over 300k sales should be enough for #1 on the Hot 100.

I like it a lot. It does sound timeless. I'm very interested in hearing what else he has to offer. I'm also very interested to hear what Liam does.

I'm very surprised. I'm so impressed with this direction he's taking. This is very good. Very good. It has that timeless classic feel. The track also didn't even feel like 6 minutes to me (but obviously a radio edit will be needed).
