Because one Toto cover is not enough. #4 on iTunes, all-genre.

What was the origin of the Africa meme?

Someone jokingly made a Twitter account based on Weezer covering "Africa" that started drumming up some interest from fans over the months, then Weezer decided to cover it. I think the "Rosanna" cover was just them trolling the fans, lol.

Watch this become a comeback hit for Weezer.
Also any news about the Black Album that was supposed to drop a couple days ago?

Can somebody explain the phenomenon that “Africa” has become recently? I mean it’s a great song so I’m not really upset, just curious why the past year I’ve seen so much internet buzz about a song from the 80s.
Anyways, this is a solid cover although it doesn’t stray far from the original at all.

I mean it’s a great song so I’m not really upset, just curious why the past year I’ve seen so much internet buzz about a song from the 80s. It's anything but for serious reasons. Africa got its spread from covers and usage in TV shows, which is actually a really poor way on how a meme gets popular. Millenials then found the song and started playing and remixing the song ironically, for the sake of hiding their crippling depression. Then, they turned to the saccharine band you all know as Weezer to beg to them to cover the song.

I think the song has just been consistently present in pop culture (TV, movies, covers, memes) and a lot of people like it for both serious and non-serious reasons. Speaking as a current college student, I've been to quite a few parties and gatherings where Toto's "Africa" comes on and everyone loves it. I think the chorus, as goofy as it may be, is super memorable and fun to sing. The song has definitely become even more popular in the past year or two.
I'm personally a fan of the original and Weezer's cover is pretty good too.

I love the original song, but I don't flip for covers. Anyway, why don't they cover "Hold The Line". I think they would be intersting.

This is actually pretty solid, maybe even better then the original (though that doesn’t say much considering I’ve always found it to be very cheesy). It’s a pretty faithful cover, although the chorus is a bit more punchy which I like.
I predict this will either go top 10 on alt or not chart, with no in between.

Heard this on the radio in excitement not understanding why this was being played on an Alternative station at 3:15pm knowing it wasn’t a “turn back the clock hour” or whatever. Anyways, I think this also could be extremely huge. Don’t forget, Weezer being attached to <sigh> AJR might mean a big multi-format hit this summer.
Hope and think it blows up.

I haven't been too fond of Weezer as their career goes on, but like most of you, I thought this was really freaking good. I can completely see why fans have wanted them to cover this in the studio for years. They fit the sound in their own way perfectly.

I honestly like this. I wouldn't mind this being a hit.
Also lmao at Trilogy being the millennial expert here.

I like it, but people turning on the radio and hearing this might think their station flipped formats

Already at +100 in three days. This is going to be huge. I’d say by next mid-week it will be greatest gainer.

this is nice i suppose, but it's way too faithful to the original...and why bother recording a cover if you aren't going to bring enough new to it to make it distinctive...play it concert? sure, but this seems pointless...prefer the original, but still, i wouldn't change the station if this version came on

Are you guys all joking? Meme or not, this is abysmal. I would probably put this below Sober Up tbh.
It's songs like this that made me stop listening to the radio.

I haven't been thrilled with Weezer in recent years either, but I don't see what's abysmal about this. I feel like they could have done a little more to make it their own, but all in all it's a well done cover of a song I always couldn't help but like, and I wouldn't change the channel if it came on.
I'm expecting it to do very well on Alt and quite possibly cross over too.

Third greatest gainer at +145 on not even half the format, right behind is The 1975. I think these two will be neck and neck at 2/3 or even 1/2 by mid-July, maybe earlier.

So if this hit #1 on iTunes and is still hovering in the Top 5, will this debut on the Hot 100?

Nothing interesting about this as a cover.
