^Amazing for beerbongs & bentleys to have its sixth week with 100k+ SPS and The Greatest Showman OST just refuses to leave the top 10 mostly due to pure sales.

Yay for Ye. It'll be interesting to see what the 2nd week drop is, in both streaming and sales.

Sales won't be much - this should be a big streaming album though

This is very sad, and disgraceful. Either all the Trump supporters have suddenly swapped places with his fanbase, or his fans are clearly looking the other way and being very selective in their wokeness. It's just the sad state of America... part of me that thinks it's a little bit of everyone's fault for the rise of the deranged autocrat who's in power. Haha is this a joke? Are fans seriously not supposed to listen to an artist’s work because they disagree with their political views? Give me a break. By the way, Kanye has been making an ass of himself in much bigger ways than a tweetstorm for years now and none of it has affected his success. He will go down as one of the most influential artists in hip-hop history, there’s no denying that.

Despite my liberal views, I support plenty of conservative public figures. What I don't support is insanity and ignorance. Especially if it's perpetuated by their art.

Yep, and no wicked I am not joking. His fans can buy/stream his album if they want, but just know that they are supporting an artist who is wholeheartedly endorsing a white supremacist, and who has declared that "slavery was a choice." Are you saying that Roseanne shouldn't have been canceled? That it was ok to say what she did without any consequences and that she should have been allowed to keep her show and fans continue watching it? Artists have been dropped by labels for much more minor offenses than his.

Just as fans can listen to whatever they want. By the way, if you support a company having the right to dictate terms of employment (which I’m sure everyone does,) then the NFL has the right to fire any player who kneels. I don’t wanna turn this into a political argument tho, I’m just saying that I don’t listen to artists for their politics, I listen to artists for their music.

I disagree with what he said and his politics views and you don’t have to be a Trump supporter to enjoy his music. He is without question one of the most talented artists out right now. It’s not like I am endorsing Kanye for president, I’m just listening to his music

There are certain artists in my lifetime who as personalities are repellant. Mariah and Kanye both come to mind. But I've never let that interfere with me enjoying the stellar output they've produced. It just so happens that they're both bi-polar, which has caused me to look at them and their personalities that turned me off differently. I've become more sensitive and understanding of the condition and the role it played in what I found so repellant. As much as I find it difficult to forgive certain things that have been said and done, like the case of Roseanne, I'm trying to not let my political views override the humanity of people who are mentally ill. I don't know them on a daily or personal basis, so it's REALLY hard to judge Roseanne or Kanye or Mariah knowing they all suffer from something I can't relate to. I do hope that they get the help the need to ensure they aren't their own worst enemy continuously.
If we didn't know the things we know about artists' personal stuff, it wouldn't be an issue. I think that's important to keep in mind. We may love an album for 10 years by an artist who has never shared their thoughts on race, etc. Do we suddenly dislike the album when we find out something we don't like about said artist?
We simply know way too much about celebrities these days, imo, and social media has made it a million times worse. Everything is about the personality rather than the artistry. That doesn't remove responsibility from the artists and what they are saying, it's just that everyone has a platform and maybe we care too much about what they're thinking and saying.
Anyway, do we think Ye will be super front-loaded and fizzle out within a few weeks or have longevity?

If someone enjoys the music of course they will continue listening to that artist. It's like Roseanne before it was cancelled. Many people watched it knowing who Roseanne was supporting, but watched anyway because it was funny.

Anyway, do we think Ye will be super front-loaded and fizzle out within a few weeks or have longevity? As someone who has various mental disorders, having one does NOT excuse you from anything. The attitude that we can't judge because they have mental health issues implies those people need to be babied and coddled by society. And do some? Yes. But not one like say, bipolar disorder. You can still function fine enough. And it's not like this is paparazzi invading their privacy to see what they do and say. They put this out there themselves. As such, the public can and will judge them for it. Yeah... Personality plays a part. Especially since a lot of music is about personality. Some artists rely on their quirkiness or ability to have fun or charisma. And I do think it'll drop like a rock. Maybe even faster than J. Cole.

Conservatives watch television, listen to top 40, read magazines and watch movies that are nothing but people who have different political opinions.
You can handle one Hip-Hop star.

Interesting discussion. It would be even more interesting to see if we switched Kanye for, say, R Kelly or Gary Glitter and see if the logic still holds for some of y’all.
I don’t think it’s about “I can separate the artist from the art”. It’s about where your personal line in the sand is. If Kanye hasn’t crossed yours yet then so be it, but I don’t think anyone should get all superior with the people whose lines he crossed.

I think what's tricky is the some make the implication that enjoying/streaming/buying one's music equals condoning their personal behavior outside of the recording studio. That's not a fair assessment. I can still get down to R. Kelly's music without thinking about all the accusations against him, as disgusting as they are, believe it or not. I don't support him as a person outside of enjoying his recordings which I already own.
I can still watch the Cosby Show, too. This doesn't mean I'm right or wrong, or that those who don't want to are right or wrong.
I do think I'm separating the troubled person from the artist/art. Bill definitely crossed a line for me with his actions in his personal life, and I don't support him. He deserves everything that is coming to him and more. But Cliff Huxtable isn't Bill Cosby's unacceptable behavior. He's a character on a TV show that I find enjoyable for more than just one character. Would I watch a Cosby stand up at this point, old or new? No. That's Bill Cosby on stage as Bill Cosby, and I don't want to hear what he has to say, funny or not.
That said, I totally understand those who choose to boycott any and everything associated.

The "personal line in the sand" for me is do I like the music or not? I personally would listen to several R Kelly songs even today, Gary Glitter too. Happen to like the music. I respect and admire people for taking a stand on political issues when it comes to boycotting one piece of music or another, because one artist or another made the news for negative reasons. However, I choose not to do that. "No one should get all superior with people whose lines he crossed", the reverse should be true as well.

maybe i'm absolutely delusional, but when I listen to music I actually listen for the music. judging it because of the person who made has never sat well with me and if I see one more person on IG say that "the new kanye album is trash" and when I am ask them why they say "because he supports Trump" I might actually hurt myself

I realize I should backtrack a bit on my original comment for it was made in a bit of haste and impulse. A couple of you have brought up the issue of Kanye (and other artists') mental health, and I have considered that with him a lot and because so, have been able to realize that his behavior and views he is espousing might not be completely genuine, so I can cut him some slack for that (a statement such as "slavery was a choice" is of course completely irrational and could not have been said by someone in a balanced state of mind). However, as Naos10 brought up, have mental illness does not completely excuse one from living with the consequences of their speech and behavior. I guess it's a matter of degree, Kanye's views seem to be on the extreme side, yet he does seem to be seriously mentally ill, maybe even seriously psychotic, so he probably belongs more in treatment than on a performing stage. But in actuality, I was only really a moderate fan of his when he used to have more mainstream radio hits in the 2000s, so I wouldn't buy or listen to his music now anyways.
I guess degree very much matters indeed, and it is an important point that has been brought up that what crosses the line for different people will really stress their patience and willingness to continue supporting their music. For instance, most of us would probably overlook minor drug offenses but what if someone has been convicted of multiple cases of child rape or mass murder? That is different from espousing political views though of course, but that is a very interesting issue as well, since we live in an ever-more increasing and even toxic partisan climate. For instance, I am assuming that at least some of the defenders of Kanye here voted for Trump or are at least conservative, so would you guys have any trouble supporting and listening to an artist who has very publicly and openly wholeheartedly endorsed and given massive campaign contributions to Hillary Clinton (assuming it was a time when she was still running for office)?

If Kanye West had come out as gay and had sparkle and rainbows on every Twitter post and public appearance he made, I wonder if people would "focus just on the music" then.

"Gay with sparkles" reminds me of Elton John - his early stuff especially is some of the best music ever written
