Scorpion is actually selling way less than DAMN which is interesting (I wouldn't compare it to Views as it came out two years ago, DAMN is much better comparison)

Call me insane but I’m actually let down by his pure sales. I expected a drop from views but this is much bigger than I anticipated. I know sales are awful right now, but I still had more hope for this. I thought this album was all but guaranteed to hit 1 million in pure sales eventually but now it looks like its really going to have to work to get there and have some great legs. I know Drake isn’t Taylor level of sales but she opened with 1.2 million in November. I’m kinda shocked Drake is struggling to open with a fourth of that with gods plan which is up there to be the biggest hit of the year & nice for what, another big number 1 song . I’m not a hater for him and his streams are clearly legendary, I just thought his sales had more potential I feel that being such a streaming beast makes him a prime candidate for continued downsizing in the sales department as streaming users increase. Every month that passes, streaming use goes up and sales go down. That's where we're at. Scorpion is all digital and streaming, no physical yet, and not having physical availability is a big deal when it comes to sales. Digital sales are a dying breed - data shows most people are either streaming or buying a physical CD. As far as Taylor goes, her album was not only available in a physical format, but it included incentives for fans to buy multiple copies. And her album was up for pre-order for awhile as well, as are most others, which definitely helps first week numbers. Scorpion is playing with a different deck of cards.

There was literally no incentive to buy this album. Perspective guys.
Apple was offering free 1 month trials for people who even already used free trials in the past to hear this album. Spotify put his face all over all the playlists.
Why would you buy an album digitally when literally every streaming service is begging you to come stream it?
And the Taylor comparison... she had physicals, a special Target edition that came with magazines, pre-orders for 2 months, AND she never established herself with streaming. Her last album sold 6 million pure. Her first week sales were so high because she never converted to Streaming, the album wasn’t available on streaming first week!
Drake Sales/SPS practically switched with this and Views. Views did 200K SPS and 850K Sales. This is doing 600K SPS and 300K Sales. It’s adjusting to times. Which is why his album will have hugely strong legs and stay on the chart much better than Reputation.
Views was also an Apple exclusive first week not available on Spotify, and the tracks weren’t available for individual purchase (this was when digital song sales were still somewhat alive).

*******I had no idea drake didn’t release physical copies. It all makes sense now. I didn’t expect significantly bigger numbers, just higher than he got and I think if it was physically available it would’ve been at least another 100k+ stronger. Thank you everyone for pointing that out

Spotify streams down 23% from Day 1. I think that's *relatively* typical? Bigger drop than U2 but less than Eminem. U2 & Eminem dropped 19-20% from Day 2 to Day 3 so we'll see what tomorrow's numbers are like.

Do we have a reference for Post Malone or Cardi B? I think those would be better comparisons to Drake than U2 or Eminem.

I hope he can pull 1M SPS somehow but sometimes these predictions go down especially for big artists.

I don't think Scorpion being double album helps in the long run.. people are neither streaming it in full nor investing money in it.
So in terms of MJ comparison, it's not Thriller, it's HIStory

725-775k total activity, 150-160k album Wowww those are weak numbers for Drake. J Cole got more pure sales than that and Post got the same.

Curious to see what the final numbers will be. Looks like the streams prediction is unchanged despite the pretty big drop on Spotify. Did HDD expect streams to drop by over 30% from day 2 to day 3?
Also anyone got stats on what the breakdown between physical and digital album sales was for his previous albums?

Surprised that the predictions dropped this low for sales, I thought he would do 250-300k.

I personally feel like Drake is showing us the future for top tier artists in the streaming era. "Sales" will be awful for everyone at some point, or non-existent. He's pretty on-par with the other major releases when it comes to streaming and sales. J. Cole "KOD" - 12 songs - 397K (174K pure sales). Post Malone "beerbongs & bentleys" - 18 songs - 461K (153K pure sales The Weeknd "My Dear Melancholy" - 6 songs - 169K (68K pure sales) Kanye West "Ye" - 7 songs - 208K (85K pure sales) I am interested in seeing if a physical release will bump it up but I highly doubt it seeing as how major retailers like Best Buy aren't going to carry the album.

20 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 and he couldn't get 200k people to buy his album...

I dont think the price is an excuse. It is $13.99 which is not that far from a normal album's price. Beyoncé got almost 500k people to purchase a $17.99 album (although in a better sales climate).

We've done this too many times already. Seriously tho, whats the point of buying an album when literrally all streaming sites BEGGING YOU to listen to it? They pretty much unlocked premium on Spotify for it and gave you a month free trial on Apple Music to listen to it

I think Views' sales were inflated by the fact it was an Apple Music/iTunes exclusive. How much did IYRTITL and ML sell first week?

Thank you everyone for pointing that out Views was sold exclusively on iTunes during the release week and opened with 850k so lack of physical sales isn't to blame.

Also anyone got stats on what the breakdown between physical and digital album sales was for his previous albums? Scorpion is not out as a physical album. Cds come out July 13th. Views debut week on the Billboard 200: pulsemusic.proboards.com/thread/158449/billboard-200-drake-852k-beyonce"Views’ 245.1 million streams for its songs equates to 163,392 SEA units." Album sales were 852,000.

Sales were not important for this release. The fact that they didn't make a pre-order available shows they're all-in on streaming. His team knows sales are a detriment to streaming longevity, which Drake has shown in past releases.

The opening might not be as impressive as it could have been but this album will have a ton of longevity thanks to streaming. That's what they were hoping for anyway so Drake still won.
