Before I heard this recording, what I knew of Kenny Rogers ranged from pretty good to fair to not good. "The Gambler" is one of those classics I can appreciate very much on a technical level but I don't connect with it emotionally super-hard. So I was stunned when I learned he was capable of this kind of performance. And yes, the song really did spend that long in the top 10 of this rankdown. Then it got two 50s...somehow 39

This was particularly painful to rank bottom 20, because I really do like this a lot. Argh.

The song comes down to two things: Newbury absolutely slaying the vocals, and the grand, gorgeous arrangement. You may also know the medley from the Elvis Presley recording. 38

I'm glad this wasn't bottom ten. I like this a lot, and, dare I say, I like it more than Elvis' version.

Thought the SD for this might be a little higher. This is really, REALLY good, and, as always, it's a testament to how tough this RD is that it just barely made my top 20.

This band was very versatile. They could do traditional and modern music equally well. Oddly enough, though, I didn't even know this song was such a huge hit. I had to find it on my own--I don't think I recall any oldies station ever playing it, though I have some guesses as to why that was. 35

I love the way the lyrical perspective keeps switching around in this song. There's something kind of funny about the way "when I get back this room better be picked up" is sung 34

The chorus is the only reason this song is in my bottom ten, tbh. The rest of the song is solid.

Melodrama, half-talky vocal delivery, and doo-wop influence are soft spots for me in classic country. Clearly Prefab Sprout were fans, too. Also, notice how long this was top 20 for? 33

This song stuck out like a sore thumb in this ranking. It's fine...I mean, there has rarely ever been a song in a gates rankdown that I have not at least liked a little bit. But boy, does its age show.

This band will actually see an appearance in a rock rankdown coming up--on Mainstream Rock, strangely. This song, meanwhile, was a big hit on their main format. As a sort of character study, wistful, reflective, yet uplifting are this song's best qualities. 32

My condolences, Sambalada and craziaskowboi. If something feels 'off' about this song's tone, that's probably because of the singer's background: he was the frontman for Wall Of Voodoo, the new wave band who made the quirky " Mexican Radio". 31

So THAT'S why a certain someone predicted it would be bottom ten. To be fair, it's not like I thought it would escape the bottom ten. I also didn't think three posters would rank it higher than me.
This song feels all kinds of "off", and that's a big part of the reason that I like it as much as I do. "Things are never quite the way they seem", indeed.

Surprised and also disappointed to see “Mr. Bojangles” out so soon because it’s a song I remember falling in love with as a kid and in turn became a fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. A few years ago I actually got the pleasure of meeting the songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker here in Austin and he’s both very humble and funny!
Kenny Rogers is another artist I became quite familiar with at a young age because his songs were everywhere and he was always showing up on television. I probably should’ve found room inside my top 10 for “Ruby Don’t Take Your Love To Town” because it’s another classic song that I’ve always enjoyed.

Not a bad day of reveals, to be honest.
Sam Stone was a solid song that deserved a bit better than it got.
I may not be a fan of Kenny Roger's delivery at least when it came to Ruby. Did you know he also covered Ol' Red (the George Jones classic that was covered by a young Blake Shelton)?
An American Trilogy and Revelator were both decent songs, but this list was stacked.
The Long Black Veil and Mr. Bojangles were pretty good songs.
I think Lucinda's delivery of Car Wheels made it one of my favorite discoveries in this rankdown. She SELLS it.
Hello Walls was an oldie but a goodie.
I think the best thing about Camouflage was the story that it told. It may have been covered by other songs, but any quirks in the delivery kept you in suspense and made the song better as a result.

Yeah... shouldn't have Camouflage made the synth-pop RD instead of this one?

Sam Stone and Time (The Revelator) are too low...I don't think Sam Stone has the best lyrics in this rankdown but man these lyrics are brutal! (P.S. if you like this style, check on Ian Noe's Between The Country that was released on May 31st.) Gillian Welch is a captivating singer and those chord changes in the middle of Time...just wow
I love the epic orchestra in An American Trilogy!
Even though I prefer the stripped down version of Long Black Veil like Lee Ann Womack's version the original version is still excellent.
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road is not one of my most favorite songs from that album but it is a good one. I wonder how Right In Time/Lake Charles/2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten (such a cool title btw) will perform here.
I find the writing style in Hello Walls quite amusing.
Not sure whether I want to be the lowest ranker of these high SD songs. Save It For A Rainy Day is boring except for the harmonica solo. Plus there is another song in this rankdown that has a better one. Camouflage is just pop and has no business in this rankdown tbh. Story is somewhat cool though.
