One of the greatest country rock songs ever made.
I'd argue that it's better than "Freebird", even without factoring in the overplay.

It took having two songs in the game, but Van Zandt is able to snag a coveted spot in the top 5, with the song that Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard turned into a country chart #1 in 1983. Just so many lines that get stuck in my head, and soft little touches in the production, make this earn its legendary status. My condolences, tim and @trilogy. Congrats on clearing your bottom 10, George Strait Junkie. 5

I swear, I've called this song "Pancho" about 100 times since this rankdown.
I mean, this song is great, but most of you know that.

I swear, I've called this song "Pancho" about 100 times since this rankdown. So I've been looking around, and I'm finding way fewer places say "Poncho" than I first thought, and that "Poncho" may have originated as a vinyl pressing error I'm going to go ahead and change it to Pancho

Glen Campbell's songs in the game were farther apart than his two fellow multiple-song artists. Though I agree WL is better, I don't agree with that assessment. But oh well--this is such a lovely song anyway. It was laser-focused on getting that #3 spot, on account of getting positive ratings across the board even if not many of them were super-high. But then lower rankings started coming in more at the end. My condolences, recordyear. 4

This was the first song I went to when he passed. An indelible, undisputed classic of the genre.

And speaking of classics...it's only one of the big ones. I'm so glad to see this do so well, as it deserves. Meanwhile, an all-Johnny Cash top two?

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."Your final top 2. Folsom Prison Blues (Live)God's Gonna Cut You DownThere's been division in this rankdown, but it seems like everyone here can agree on one thing: Johnny is the G.O.A.T.. He's fended off all competitors, and now, no matter what song loses, Johnny wins. Which Cash form will take the crown, though? Young Outlaw, or Elder Man In Black? Tale of the Tape:Both of these songs were over 90 points ahead of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". Only 4 bottom half rankings remain. These songs have a combined 22 top 10s. No one can get a perfect top 2. House Lannister comes closest, being down to his 1 and 4. Red and Daryl the Beryl have the only other #1s left. Four posters have no top 10s in the top 2: peacebone, recordyear (although he has his 11), Beno, and Kanenrá:ke

This song never felt any pressure in its road to victory from any song other than GGCYD, and even then, the lead never got into the single-digits in the late game. And why would it need to worry? The record has everything going for it--an excellent base song, the perfect setting, a singer in his prime, and a fire backing band. At least it wasn't so obvious, and the #1s managed to be spread out over a number of songs. In fact, the only person who thought to rank this #1 was Red . 1

"Folsom Prison Blues" is one of the most punk songs that has ever been released, and that's what I love about the song more than anything else. I mean, s hit, it was in an RFS before it was added to this rankdown. I love that song so much, and it's one of my favorite gates RD winners, for sure. I wouldn't have been upset if "God" had won, of course, it has rightly earned its status as a modern classic, but there was only ever going to be one winner of my heart. Another great rankdown hosted, singingrulebritannia, but like you need me to tell you that.

That's a wrap, folks! All who watched, commented, and submitted: thank you. I was nervous about making this rankdown, because I wasn't sure how people would react to me making a personal rankdown for this genre. But it seems I had nothing to worry about after all. Now, I think it's been long enough--it's about time I return to my forte and host a personal rock RD. And I have a lot of ground to cover. Anticipate the opening of Random Rock Volume 1 sometime in the next few days!

Lmao! Me having the top 2 ranked super high was still not enough to save me from having the worst closeness score Most people would say the American Recording series's definitive moment was "Hurt". But this is my favorite. This song is spooky in its menacing religiosity, and the instrumentation, production, and Johnny's vocals capture it wonderfully. My condolences, House Lannister and Daryl the Beryl . Yes, this is a perfect description of this song! This was one of the few songs in this rankdown that I had heard before, and tbh I never really liked it much... But clearly I was just listening to it in the wrong context! Listening to it for this rankdown, sitting in a semi-dark quiet room, listening to Johnny's weathered vocals booming through my headphones, I had goosebumps for practically the entire song. This is one hell of an artistic statement!! I was so close to putting it at #1! It would have been nice to see it win. However, it is super cool that Johnny was able to nail down the entire top 2! No complaints at all with how this thing wrapped up!

Um pretty sure there are 7-minute songs in country that are far better than Farewell Transmission...The style is not clicking with me at all. On the other hand Green Grass & High Tides is just excellent epic southern rock jam! Wichita Lineman has A+ production from 1968. Appreciate the creativity especially in last 30 seconds. God's Gonna Cut You Down is fine, but this group of songs is so strong and I don't find it that remarkable, so congrats to Folsom Prison Blues! Thanks for hosting this rankdown singingrulebritannia anyway.

While the top 10 didn't exactly go the way I wanted it to (I got absolutely decimated in the 20-11 range), I still really enjoyed this rankdown! This was the first time that had participated in a country rankdown, and I had a great time going through different songs in a genre I'm admittedly not very familiar with at all. Thanks for hosting Gates, and I'll definitely be back for whatever you do next (:

Final thoughts:
Thanks for hosting this rankdown, Disassociative. Lots of good/great discoveries.
Yeah, that prediction list was the last thing I did before getting my oil and tires changed. By the time I got home, I needed to take a nap. After I woke up 4 hours later, I went back to sleep until 8 AM. Summer Wine would have been 4th on that list, Lonesome would have been 3rd, Wichita Lineman would have been 5th and Green Grass would have been 6th.
I secretly knew this would have come down to the Cash tunes. I felt like Lineman or Wine would have been the songs to prevent this, was rooting for Hank but oh well.
I'm fine with the winner, but the runner-up was just so good from the opening seconds. I think I remember Cut You Down from an episode of The Blacklist?
Kudos to Hank getting bronze. And did I imagine it or did I vastly outrank a country poster by about 30-40 spots for this?
Summer Wine was just so breezy and completely unlike These Boots Were Made for Walkin'.
Farewell Transmission was a solid song, but it paled in comparison to the others.

In my defense, I did enjoy the Hank song well enough. I would never skip it if it were to come on! For me it just didn't match up well against many of the songs in this rankdown, probably due in large part to its age. Plus Hank Williams has never really won me over; his voice isn't that great to me. There's no doubt he had a huge impact on shaping the country genre though!

Thank you to singingrulebritannia for hosting this one! I loved the list so much, with so many great classics I grew up on and some of my favorite from modern artists it was a great showcase for the non mainstream country! While Johnny was my #20/#22 I still love both songs and would've easily had songs I liked more from him higher. I was especially pleased that "Can The Circle Be Unbroken" wasn't killed off too early like I feared! That song is just special to me as a fan of the genre and it's place in the history of it.

“Pancho & Lefty” has long been a favorite of mine and I remember first discovering it when Willie and Merle covered it in the early 80’s for their duet album of the same name. It wasn’t until the last couple of years that I finally started to learn of and appreciate the storied history of the song and also had the pleasure of seeing Emmylou Harris sing it live recently here in Austin. I wasn’t sure how far this song would make it but was hoping for a top 5 showing so glad to see it sneaked in. Thanks again for hosting this singingrulebritannia as I really enjoyed doing a rankdown with more classic songs.
