For what it's worth, my #1 and #2 were a coin flip.

By the way, since a lot of people are criticizing my #1 as a "faux-country" synth-pop song, here's a similar song that I likewise strangely enjoy, by Kenny Rogers, from 1989:

And here's another Stan Ridgway song I enjoy that features some obvious country elements, from 1987:

Don't have too much to say about this song. It just...works. Great melodies and all players in lockstep. 30

There's a reason I included multiple songs from a few artists: I really love their work (and they haven't been represented well in rankdowns up to this point). So clearly I was going to give their stuff high ranks even among this field. The two word to best describe this song: slopes and flow. It just tickles my brain in very particular ways. 29

Ugh :'( So, this is one of the songs that spurred me to make this rankdown in the first place. Petr & the Wulf is legitimately one of my favorite albums of all-time. It's one of the few concept/opera/longform story albums where everything comes together the way it should. I adore the darkness, the rickety feel, the multi-faceted structures, the creativity overall, and the passion of the performances. I knew this song choice would stand out in this rankdown; I'm just happy a decent porton of submitters felt it stuck out positively. But God, it was so close to top half. Just 10 points away! 28

My knowledge of 80s mainstream country is not very extensive. But I knew I couldn't abandon the decade entirely. Luckily, I knew George Jones, and I knew how long his strident consistency extended. 27

The poor final song to miss the top 25. Country is definitely not without its collection of self-referential tunes, or satirical/self-critical songs. As far back as the 70s, hitmakers were concerned about the quality/integrity of the music they were sharing airtime with. 26

My condolences, American Idiot. After having it on my wishlist for years, I had very recently listened to a Hank Snow compilation at the time of finalizing the list (and if you've been following my rankdowns, you know what I usually do to late additions to my lists, unfortunately). I recognized this specific song from Johnny Cash's version on the second American Recordings album. I am glad both Reno-referencing songs made the top half and I also like this more than "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". Congrats on, as always, being the first to clear your bottom 10, Red. Not only are you the first, but (teaser) you'll be the only one to do it before the top 20. 25

My condolences, bboat11. This song is another one of the main reasons I thought to make this rankdown. I initially had placed it in my 2010s all-genre rankdown, but I figured it would get treated terribly there. So I thought, why not make a more fitting rankdown where I can showcase this song (and others)? Side note: when I first heard this album, I only knew Lambert out of the three women. Now, since participating in the last two BOTB country RDs, I've learned I should listen to more Monroe too. 24

OK, real talk: even though I've now lost 3 top 10s this set, I'm just happy this made the top half, because it really didn't seem like it would. 16 Horsepower is probably my single favorite country group or artist. It seems almost too typical being a mainly rock fan this is I would favor, lol. But the band is just bursting with mystery and talent 23

My condolences, peacebone. It may be sacrilege to say this is one of my favorite things Neil Young has ever been responsible for, but it's true (and what a coincidence, he still has a song in the rankdown, continuing the chain started with Grievous Angel). So ethereally beautiful. 22

I didn't end up submitting for this, but my #1 would've most likely been either one of "Green Grass & High Tides" or "Folsom Prison Blues".

Black Soul Choir is essentially a gothic country masterpiece, glad to see it do as well as it did; Can the Circle Be Unbroken is also fantastic, good to see the age didn't bring it down too much

"Can The Circle Be Unbroken" is proof that you don't need a super high budget or really modern production to make awesome music

This is a tough set. On one hand, sure, I cleared my bottom ten. Surprise. But on the other, some of the songs I was really rooting for went out here. "Grandfater" was a wonderful first listen, my second highest, "Black Soul Choir" was another great first listen, and "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" is just a lot of fun.
Meanwhile, even though it was one of my lowest remaining, I was rooting for "Can the Circle Be Unbroken" to make the top 20. Would have been so cool to see an almost 100 year old song make the top 20 in this.

This was a tough set.
Lost I've Been Everywhere (just a lot of fun as he names places around the US), Still Doin' Time (George Jones added punch to this), and Gentle on My Mind (nice bit of tenderness from Mr. Campbell) from my top 10.
Wrecking Ball and Can the Circle Be Unbroken felt like nice bits of pure country.
Black Soul Choir and Grandfater were more alternative-country, but nice finds nonetheless.
Housewife's Prayer was a nice tune from the Pistol Annies, probably best known as backup on Blake Shelton's Boys Round Here. But they're quite capable on their own merits.
The best thing about Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way is that even back then people were questioning the current direction of country music. See Aaron Lewis's That Ain't Country for a more recent example.
Let It Ride was decent, but in this type of rankdown, decent won't get out of my bottom 6. Nothing against the tune, though.

So is the Munly & the Lupercalians song titled Grandfater or Grandfaher? Either way it reminds me of some good Arcade Fire songs tbh. I've Been Everywhere is just too out there for me. Hot take: I think the debut album of Pistol Annies is the worst album out of three albums they released. The melodies in that album are so boring even though thee are bold lyrics. Housewife's Prayer is no exception. Unexpected perfect ranking for Black Soul Choir. Solid song in this list. What can I say, I love dreamy/atmospheric music (this was a first listen for me, for the record) Just listen to entire album already. I prefer Deeper Well/Sweet Old World/May This Be Love more than title track (all 10/10) though. Wrecking Ball and Can the Circle Be Unbroken felt like nice bits of pure country. The song (and the album) feels closer to alt-country than pure country.

Yes, country and punk can co-exist. Last time we ranked this band, the result...well, it wasn't bad, but it could've been better. This placing seems more appropriate. 19

We go from a decidedly un-mainstream song to one of the most successful songs of the 60s. Although, looking back, a song this stylistically complex and dense with character about such a heavy topic could've only been a monster smash hit during the Summer Of Love. Congrats on clearing your bottom 10, commerce196 18
