Marty Robbins has been in a game before. "El Paso" was in the Hot 600 tournament. It placed 5 out of 6 in a round with "Airplanes", "I Want To Know What Love Is", and "Smooth", and then it got beat by a damn Jennifer Lopez song. Yea...the futility of attaining any justice in that game, combined with the unreliability of the hosting, didn't encourage me to ever participate much. So let's show off Marty's other classic, in a place it'll be better understood. (though not by Daryl the Beryl, who clears his bottom 10) Oh, this was also apparently on a Fallout: New Vegas radio station. So any of you who played that game might recall this song from that. 17

CSNY always straddled the line between folk, country, and classic rock, and they were never afraid to seem uncool through it all. But any way you look at it, this is easily their best work as a team. Chunky riffs, a slow pounding swing, and righteous anger, is all you need to satisfy me. 16

I've never liked Krauss's biggest hit "When You Say Nothing At All". Luckily, I heard her praised live album and liked everything else on it more than that song. Before this rankdown opened, I believe Alison Krauss was the most successful artist on the list in terms of Pulse games. I didn't know how the non-country audience in this RD would take to her sound, so I thought this song could potentially be a high SD. Didn't turn out that way. Though, @humanshazam and I are still clearing our bottom 10s here, so there's that. :kii: 15

Uncle Tupelo is the precursor you have to thank for spawning Son Volt and Wilco, both critically adored bands who have appeared on rock chart rankdowns. But before the split, the band was frustrated because their label was toying with them financially and trying to lump them in with the alt-rock boom. Their response was to say "screw it" and record a roots album, including this dusty, somber, slow but persistently rolling song. 14

Big Iron is awesome, a buddy of mine showed me that Marty Robbins album this past semester, really need to check it out
edit: "dusty, somber, slow but persistently rolling song" is exactly how I would've described Moonshiner so I got nothing to say lmao

This is where Jason Isbell toiled before recently finding popularity on the AAA format solo/with his new band. Haven't seen #1 losses in a while, so let's bring them back in a big way--two of them, brought down by a pair of rankings on the complete opposite end. Suppose my own ranking didn't help, but then again, I probably love this just as much as any of you top 10 rankers do, so I have an excuse . Somehow, even with 4 max-min rankings, this isn't one of the top 10 highest SDs. Go figure. My condolences, commerce196 and Beno. But congrats to American Idiot for clearing your bottom 10. I do wonder if big DBT fan dm2081 could've boosted them into the top 10 with his ranking... 13

My strange manner of finding out about songs doesn't cease. "Walkin' After Midnight" may be iconic, but I never would've sought it out if it weren't for the parody (though it's basically just a goofily-performed cover?) by Vinnie & the Stardusters
Congrats on clearing your bottom 10, peacebone. So...one woman, Nancy Sinatra, remains in the rankdown. Will her song survive one more reveal to reach the top 10? 12

The song left stranded at the door of the top 10...is George Strait Junkie's 1. My condolences. It's a top 5 for me too :( However, it was craziaskowboi's last bottom 10. This is simply a world-conquering melody, and it gave Merle Haggard his first of many #1 hits. 11

My 8 and 10 made the top ten, but Patsy didn't?! What? Kind of surprised both Townes songs made the top ten. I thought that one might, but not both.
I'd keep an eye on "Summer Wine" as a potential dark horse to win.

A lot to talk about...
Big Iron and The Lucky One for me are the big losses. Big Iron did a great job telling the story of a memorable showdown. The Lucky One was another marriage of wonderful instrumentation and singing as the story of a happy go lucky drifter is told.
Most of the others were pretty good. Ohio felt a bit out of place in this rankdown, but still a solid song.
I don't normally focus on stats. But when you're in the top 5 in closeness and second in ranks remaining (including one bottom 10), you take notice.
I'm surprised by both Townes Van Zandt songs surviving. I thought Poncho had a good chance, but Waiting Around would have sputtered out in the mid-teens.
I think both Johnny Cash songs, Summer Wine (with presumably low SD), and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry have shots at winning this.

Absolutely love that harmonica solo in Moonshiner. What a sad tone. I'm surprised by both Townes Van Zandt songs surviving. I thought Poncho had a good chance, but Waiting Around would have sputtered out in the mid-teens. Echo with this. Perhaps no one tanked these two songs so they end up high. My prediction: 1. Folsom Prison Blues 2. Wichita Lineman 3. God's Gonna Cut You Down 4. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry 5. Green Grass and High Tides 6. Poncho & Lefty 7. Can't You See 8. Summer Wine 9. God's Gonna Cut You Down Wait where did "Summer Wine" go Oh it went right here When you think of Nancy Sinatra, the first song to jump to mind is probably "Boots". But her work with Hazlewood means more to me personally, so that's what I included. Lana Del Rey recently put out a well-received Sublime cover--about 6 years ago, she also covered this song. Burt Bacharach may have flopped as a songwriter in this rankdown, but I'd say he recovered as a fairly clear influence on the style of this song. Congrats to Beno on clearing your bottom 10. Assuming you'd have rather cleared it before losing your #1, but oh well. 10

Yep, this song produced a staaaaark divide (like I figured it would), but the love was enough to drag it beaten and bruised into the top 10. Without crazi, there would be not a single ranking between top 10 and bottom 20, which is hilarious. I love the imagery, metaphor, and sentiments of this song's lyrics. And you know you've put together a special group of musicians when you can give them just a chord progression and, in one take, they can make it never grow tired over so long a track and bloom into an epic of this magnitude. R.I.P. Jason Molina. Went too young. f**k addiction. My condolences, @humanshazam. The curious part is, for as many bottom 10s this has, this was only the last bottom 10 for recordyear and House Lannister. 9

I love the imagery, metaphor, and sentiments of this song's lyrics. And you know you've put together a special group of musicians when you can give them just a chord progression and, in one take, they can make it never grow tired over so long a track and bloom into an epic of this magnitude.
pretty much sums up why this is one of my favorite songs ever made, simply magical. I get a lot of songwriting inspiration from this track specifically. not sure what you didn't hear in this song, bottom 10 rankers, but hey it made top 10 at least!

In contrast, #8 is the 4th lowest SD.

I knew this wasn't going to be the higher Townes song, because "Poncho"'s stature in the popular consciousness is loftier for various reasons. So if "Poncho" was going to make the top 10, I'm glad this snuck in at the last moment too, because it's the one I prefer. It's kind of my thing to cherish the simple sadder beauties above all No bottom 10s, so people looking to clear theirs must continue *ahem* waiting. This is also the last song without a top 5. 8

The "right" one is higher, I guess, but I really liked both Townes songs, and I'm glad that both made the top ten.

One of the most iconic flute parts in popular music this side of Jethro Tull, hiding some dark verses. "Can't You See" wasn't an absolute smash at the time of release, but its fame has risen through numerous covers, including familiar face Waylon Jennings who took it to #4 on the Country charts in 1976. Now I'm hearing it on classic rock stations more and more. Congrats to @trilogy on clearing your bottom 10. 7

Yeah, I didn't know this song by name going into the rankdown, but I've definitely heard it before elsewhere. I love that some songs just rise up out of the woodwork from the past and become more prevalent as time passes.

I'm not sure if I expected this to be a high SD...in fact, I was closer to thinking it might be pretty unifying and compete for the win. The first few rankings quickly dashed those predictions against the rocks, but the song eventually fought back to grab the top 10 it deserves. I assume a lot of people my age were introduced to this song in a similar fashion: through the first Rock Band video game. It's basically like a Freebird that hasn't been ruined by overplay and memes. This reveal clears the bottom 10s of tim, Sambalada, and Kanenrá:ke. 6
