I love this, especially the second part.🔥
SOUR singles are still better tho (so far), but I'll probably change my mind in the coming days or weeks.

I like it but agree with others that she hasn't established her own identity yet and this isn't really helping. But I think this will still do nicely and she'll be fine.

On first listen, it's very solid and within her already established lane. It'll keep her core audience happy, will smash radio and probably go #1 everywhere. Staying on brand for lead single was the right call, but hoping the album experiments more.

I'm late but this is really good! definitely different from SOUR and I'm here for it!
It'll be interesting to see what guts she has in store for us.

This was a bit underwhelming for me. It feels a bit chaotic and overwrought, and not really distinct enough from her first era. Maybe it'll grow on me, but I am hoping the rest of her album explores other sounds besides this.

Continue to be baffled by this Diet Lorde's massive success.

What did she mean by "girls your age should know better" is she talking about Tay? Am scared are they really not friends anymore? It’s so very obviously not about Taylor Swift. She was in a six-month relationship with a 30-year-old man who clearly is a monster, and that’s likely who she wrote this song about, as the man is a known behind-the-scenes figure in the music industry.

Lorde is a two 2-hit album wonder at this point, and has kinda fallen off the pop landscape. We’ve compared Billie, Olivia, all to Lorde. Why are we bringing other artists into this anyway? We never learn.
I couldn’t stop playing this last night, I finally fell asleep around 2am.
She’s such a cutie. :)

Yeah, this feels like a song that will spend 2 or 3 weeks at number 1 then fall down the charts fairly fast. Maybe 25-30 weeks on chart

It's not a bad song, but I feel like I haven't heard a single song of hers that didn't sound derivative of someone else. Like, she is heavily influenced only by the musicians she listened to as a teenager and is unable at the moment to break away from that or make her own style and sound. A lot of us also like the music she listened to as a teenager, but I do wonder how long she will make it this way. It's not completely uncommon for young artists to do this. Like, I can think of a few pop stars that took 2-3 albums to find their "real" groove, especially very young ones that started off with a major label.

She was in a six-month relationship with a 30-year-old man who clearly is a monster, and that’s likely who she wrote this song about, as the man is a known behind-the-scenes figure in the music industry. There are some lyrics that definitely could be about Taylor, and the way she described the genesis of the song ("I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano") wouldn't lead you to believe it's about a breakup. Normally, you would just say, "it's about a breakup" or "I was seeing this guy who turned out to be awful" if it was actually about that - since a breakup is a universally accepted/recognized motivation for a song. But the bulk of the lyrics definitely fit her relationship with Zack Bia more than anyone else (especially "fame f*cker" given his celebrity hanger-on status). Of course, that introduces a new form of frustration - since you have this random dweeby guy who somehow not only dated Madison Beer and Olivia Rodrigo but left enough of an impression that they wrote heartbreaking songs about him.

This song will be a multi week #1 and easily be in the Top 10 until she releases GUTS in September. Anybody thinking a freefall is delusional. She's a streaming monster and radio will play it all summer.

Lorde is a two 2-hit album wonder at this point, and has kinda fallen off the pop landscape. We’ve compared Billie, Olivia, all to Lorde. Why are we bringing other artists into this anyway? We never learn. Lorde not being a pop force in 2023 isn't really relevant when her sound and style is all over Olivia's work tho? And it's not like we can't have more than one--Olivia can, should, and hopefully will carve out a niche within that general sound that will make the comparisons less apt. But musical influence is always a thing, finding ways to talk about music/sound has always involved other artists (and not always negatively, it's just an easy way to describe something you hear in a writing medium). Saying that a handful of newer Taylor Swift songs are clearly Lana del Rey-influenced isn't an insult or critique so much as an observation or fact, if not outright praise. "Diet Lorde" was a critique, though, because this feels directly inspired by Lorde without being 1) as good, 2) offering something new. imo, obv.

I also didn’t hear Lorde on Drivers License or Good 4 U. But some hear things I don’t. I got the Billie and Lorde comparisons but not Olivia.

There is nothing inherently wrong with comparing artists, it's a valid form of critique. This is not a case of pitting two female artists against each other, just discussing the reductive nature of Olivia's music. It's obvious she's inspired by the artists she loved as a teenager, unfortunately she was literally a teenager like a week ago. So I understand why she sounds the way she does. But she's not just pulling from Lorde, it's Billie, it's Taylor, it's Lana, it's Paramore. Lyrically, thematically, vocally, musically, hell, even the way she markets her music. Her influences are so blatant it's already landed her in trouble on two of her biggest hits. This is undeniable stuff. But obviously none of that seems to matter. She's had massive success and has built a rabid fanbase. No doubt in my mind this will be a gigantic hit. Just wish she was doing all of this without sounds that feel like retreads.

Seems like her and her team focused too much on being edgy than actually creating a likable song. I don't dislike it, but I don't think it will grow on me much. We'll see! Weird since so many people in this thread actually like the song. Maybe it is likeable just not to someone with horrid taste like you?

It's a good song, but I expected better based on what I heard on SOUR. Hoping it grows on me more, which I'm sure it will.

Sounds like she took one of the Sour ballads, tacked on a piece of good 4 u, and called it a day.
Absolutely nothing new here, and the law of diminishing returns will likely apply.

Not a HUGE fan of this one. I’m sure CHR will show her some goodwill but not sure if it’s gonna be the Summer behemoth like some of y’all think.

Weird since so many people in this thread actually like the song. Maybe it is likeable just not to someone with horrid taste like you? Initial reactions from an artist of this magnitude are typically overblown negative or positive at first listen. I don't suspect this will have much longevity but we'll see. I like her! I just don't see this song lasting very long.
