Plus Taylor is one of the most supportive, respectful artists out there. She is hyping up the crowd during other acts performances, sheβs telling people to stand up, sheβs screaming and clapping at every award. Sheβs the epitome of a good time and people love to see it, especially from a celebrity.

Congrats to BLACKPINK for winning group of the year! The last female group to win this award was TLC in 1999.

I think the Taylor criticism is valid, just worded too harshly lmao.
She won 9 VMAs tonight, the most for a single night in history. The Midnights music videos were not iconic, career defining, or a truly huge moment in any capacity for her to be sweeping VMAs like that lol.
Sheβs been basically getting sweeps just for attendance with them ever since 2019 due to the dire state of A-listers attending these award shows. Then the cameras being dedicated to showing her every moment is just overboard. To the Swifties itβs βyasss queenβ but to the average person itβs probably a bit eye roll inducing.
I think after like⦠the early 2010s, VMAs basically became another glorified Teen Choice Awards and abandoned the original purpose.
I think itβs nice to tune in for the performances if you like any artists, but as far as the awards themselves thatβs just an attendance/politics thing at this point. Hell, even music videos themselves arenβt that relevant anymore so its hard to truly stage an award show on them these days to begin with.

Did Taylor not deserve probably any of those wins tonight? Yes.
Can I blame her for that? Eh not really with the way the VMA's work its kinda bound to happen but at the end of the day if you think an award validates a piece of music then you got a few screws loose or worse.

Will watch some performances later on Youtube but I guess the most interesting thing from pop culture perspective was the NSYNC re-union.

Too much hip-hop for my taste so far. Not even the BET awards would have so many rappers in the first 40 minutes of the show. Lil Wayne, Nicky Minaj, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Kaliii or whatever her freakin name is. This should be the hip-hop music awards, not the video music awards. Agree

My biggest qualm of the night is that VMAs completely forgot how to open a damn award show. When you think of the likes of Britney debuting Gimme More in 2007, Madonna and the famous kiss in 2003, I used to really look forward to the pop culture moment of the opening act.
NSync performing a medley would have been epic. Taylor Swift performing an Eras medley would have been epic. BeyoncΓ© performing a Renaissance medley would have been epic.
Alas we got a Lil Wayne/Olivia Rodrigo twofer

I'm not the best at telling if someone is lip syncing but this Nicki performance is a snoozefest that she has no reason not to be singing it live At least she can sing. Megan and Cardi have no talent compared to her.

Honestly (and this is more a Random Thought than anything but who goes there) ever since Lady GaGa came out the era of lip synced performances kinda jumped the sharkβ¦ π Like, I just canβt watch and enjoy them anymore. That goes for every offender these days π€
Itβs just overly fake/pathetic and itβs giving Minnie Vanillie or whatever tbh

Iβm a Swift Fan myself and it was obvious the minute Taylor was on the Red Carpet she was gonna win! Same with Selena Gomez! This award show used to have great performances and besides the obvious Shakira it was lackluster. Only memorable presenters were the *NSYNC Reunion. MTV really forgot how to make moments with this show. It felt just another typical award show.

I think what set the VMA's apart from the others is that it used to kind of welcome controversy and mess. Those moments that became instantly engraved into pop culture history. Nowadays, it seems there isn't a lot of time given for those unless it's during performances and even then, most of the pop stars today and the performers they have on there don't exactly exude personality. It also probably didn't help that the writer's strike prevented most of Hollywood from being able to participate. Having actors present helped up the interest factor a bit, especially when paired strangely and given some time to ad lib a bit. There's too much effort put into the spectacle and not enough into the actual people aspect of the show.

Pretty much 4 hours of garbage with the exception of Shakira, Olivia, Maneskin and Fall Out Boy. The 50 years of hip hop tribute was an embarrassment. Also, enough of Taylor Swift giving 55 acceptance speeches and pretending to dance during each song at every single award show. They've been showing this crap for how long? 10 years? Don't Taylor, her team and TV producers realize that people will eventually get tired of it? Yeah! Fuck Taylor for trying to enjoy herself at these things! She should sit her ass down and stare straight ahead until either her name is called or the show is over! No need to get defensive. Unlike other A-listers that do attend and sit in front row at a couple of award shows every two or three years, Taylor Swift has been showing up at every single award show on planet earth for the past ten years, sits in front row to make sure the cameras are constantly on her and pretends to dance to and enjoy every performance. To the average viewer, it comes out as fake and obnoxious. If you don't see it, then good for you for enjoying that fake crap. I mean, do you ever see the likes of Beyonce, Adele or other A-listers act in the same way? They probably know better than that.

So her being at every award show the last ten years is not true and either way who cares. Taylor gets criticism from miserable people like you for having fun and enjoying the show. She would also get criticism if she were to act bored and be on her phone and not interested (see the comments online about Selena last night). She's the biggest star in the world, of course she's going to be shown on camera. I truly doubt the people who dislike her are even tuned in to this show. To the average viewer, it looks like she is enjoying herself and having a good time. To you it looks fake.

She "makes sure" the cameras are on her? Do you not know how things work? Serious question. Even the way the tweet is worded, it was MTV who made the decision to have a camera dedicated to Taylor. So back to your point about her "making sure" the cameras are on her....? Good for you, honey. Ignorance is bliss. I'd expect you to be happier tbh

Oh my days! Megan and Cardi talentless and Taylor Swift doubles as a camerawoman during award shows. The things I have learned!

I didn't watch live but watched enough of it in social media:
Olivia needs to go to that singing school where Taylor and Rihanna eventually improved vocals.
I love Cardi and Meg and their stage presence, sadly the track is still not it.
I still feel like Demi going back to her old hits is kinda sad. I want her to explore more of her Tell Me You Love Me sound.
Shakira was great as always. She was probably a mix of playback and some sprinkled live vocals at some points. She's been doing this for these huge performances for a while now.
I'm still not in love with Doja's campaign for this album but she still commands the stage like a boss. And she sounded good.
Not in love with the lethargic Nicki song still. She looked the best she's ever looked though.
Selena and Taylor obviously were told beforehand that they were winning. There's video of Selena leaving as soon as she got her award.
Blaming the artists isn't fair game though. Taylor knows this is a good marketing oppo. It's not her fault MTV awards based on attendance (hence why Miley Cyrus went home empty handed).
Also to be completely fair there have been no iconic videos this year where I feel anything got truly robbed. It was nice that Shakira and Karol G got some love, SZA got one as well. VMAs are cool if you have them but it's also fine if you don't.

I wonder what was behind the decision to leave out the "video" part of most of the award titles? "Best Pop," Best R&B," "Best Rock" just sounds so awkward lol. If they're trying to emphasize the song or the "performance" more than the video, it would be better to just include "song" or "performance" at the end of the title.

Dojo's performance was brilliant. She did it live and had the presence of a proper superstar. She will go on do great things (more than she already has) even if not her all singles reach top ten.

VMAs have not pulled it off since 2016, that's the last one I remember LOVING the show. Britney, BeyoncΓ©'s LEMONADE slay + medley, Rihanna getting Vanguard and giving 4 performances, Ariana + Nicki doing Side to Side... still remember all of that very well.
I didn't watch the live show but checking out the performances and the winners, what an underwhelming night. "Anti-Hero" is really not all that, I rolled my eyes seeing it won BEST DIRECTION of all things. the video had no direction at best β mediocre at worst.
Agree that this is a career high for Swift and she gets decorated simply for bothering to show up. good for her, she had a good night and seemed to have fun (even though she still dances off beat after, what, 15 years of attending these things?).
If I could get trophies for dressing up and going to a show, I would also act annoying and overly enthusiastic.

Anyone remember the 2020 claustrophobic show? I sure am happy we're back to Taylor Swift dancing offbeat and people singing off key.

Iβm not sure if MTV manipulates the lesser categories (Anitta winning was questionable but maybe her Brazilian fanbase is rabid) but all of the Twitter pages that track fan votes that I saw had Taylor winning all of her categories with a healthy lead. This is the lady that wins most if not all of her fan voted awards I remind youβ¦ Taylor definitely gets notified beforehand that she won and thatβs the reason she attends. VMAβs donβt manipulate the votes for her to win so that she shows up.

Not sure if all the categories where Miley lost to Taylor were fan voted though. Best Cinematography fits this bill. Both nominated, Taylor won, Miley also nominated. And itβs voted for by industry professionals. Thereβs 6 total categories voted for by industry professionals, but only 1 category where both Miley and Taylor were nominated. But letβs be real here, any award show voted on by fans during the βstan Twitter voting campaignβ era raises concerns of a fanbase causing a sweep. Tbh, itβs why the Grammys (even with their many flaws) is the only music award show I watch anymore. I havenβt watched the VMAs since like 2018 or 2019.
