You are absolutely correct! Baha Men were definitely "It" in 2000! Even Angela Via danced to the song in the limo as we were driven to our dinner date by the Bay. Ay caramba! :o
I can't believe no one mentioned them before.

Ashanti was the "It" person in April of 2K2. Ashanti was DEFINATELY the IT person of 2002.

Who's the "IT" person for 2005? It doesn't seem like 50 Cent is really big this year for some reason. Anyways heres what i think for the past 7 yrs:
1998: BSB 1999: Britney Spears 2000: NSYNC or Britney Spears (Both of them were at the height of their popularity and were moving albums like crazy!!!) 2001: Jennifer Lopez 2002: Nelly/Eminem/Ashanti/JaRule 2003: Beyonce/50Cent 2004: Usher 2005: ? ? ? I think its Mariah or 50 Cent

I think it's between Kelly, Gwen and Mariah for 2005.

I don't think its Kelly at all. The "It" person is always on tv or whatnot and being talked about. Kelly is just getting really good radio play and album sales, she really isn't in the public too much. Same goes for Gwen. I think Mariah is the "It" person of the year, just because of her song and album being so big and its her real big comeback.

I'd say Mariah is the "it" person of 2005 now. She came out of nowhere with the biggest hit of her career, an album that is already 2005's second best seller, and is on some huge TV event weekly.
Gwen is also "it" right now. So are Coldplay and Green Day.

I think Coldplay are more like Norah Jones, they sell tons of albums but there not really popular (or maybe its just me, lol).

I think Mariah is the ''it'' person of 2005. Her comeback is incredibly strong. She's gonna enjoy this upcoming awards season.

I think Gwen is the "it" person of 2005 right now. Mariah is definitley close, and actually I think she'll do enough to pull far ahead of Gwen as the year progresses. However I think at the moment, Gwen's surfing on a huge wave of "itness".

overall id say Mariah is "IT" the BET&MTV crowd is feeling her alot right now, Coldplay is the "IT" for bands and Kelly and Gwen have the Pop scene on lock and key

Coldplay's fans are high school and college males (and females too for that matter). Norah Jones' fans are 45 year old women. Which demographic is more part of the "it" group?

In recent years nobody has dominated a year the way Usher dominated 2004. He had the massive album sales as well as the airplay.

People don't think highly of him because he's so F'n egotistical. And I know TONS of other people, besides the people on PMB, who think he has a big ego.

Did NSYNC ever get a number one hit on the Hot 100? "Its Gonna Be Me" hit #1. And "Bye Bye Bye" was #1 on Pop for 10 weeks! And their airplay may have not been as much but thats only because Usher has Urban airplay. I think Bye Bye Bye hit #1 on Rhythmic and BOMT went Top 10 on Rhythmic, so their airplay was fairly good compared to Usher. And plus they sold much more than Usher. BOMT sold 14M, NSA has sold well over 12M but its certified 11xp.

Plus, "Bye Bye Bye" was #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for 5 weeks! Back when Urban didn't dominate EVERYTHING at the time. And pure pop songs actually did well at CHR/Rhythmic!

Yeah, I knew "Bye Bye Bye" did well on Rhythmic. Heck, Oops went top 10 there! And GIAB went to #1! lmao

Yeah, I knew "Bye Bye Bye" did well on Rhythmic. Heck, Oops went top 10 there! And GIAB went to #1! lmao I never understood how Christina always did better than Britney on CHR/Rhythmic. For example: Early pop periods: R&R peaks: Genie In A Bottle #1 What A Girl Wants #1 I Turn To You #12 Come On Over #11 Britney: ...Baby One More Time #11 Sometimes #16 Crazy #10 Oops!...I Did It Again #8 Lucky #20

Well I was basing this on the first poster's definition of the "It" person. Kelly has sold more albums than Gwen and Mariah (so far) and as had more hits than they have this year with tons of cross format success. So why wouldn't she be a contender? If you define it as biggest media whore for the year, she's obviously last out of the 3.
