For an update...(with years with multiple artists, they are listed in order of popularity...IMO). The list represents chart success and general domination of the music industry that year. 1990 - Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey 1991 - Mariah Carey 1992 - ? 1993 - Whitney Houston 1994 - Boys II Men 1995 - TLC, Hootie & The Blowfish, Alanis Morissette 1995/1996 - Mariah Carey 1996 - Alanis Morissette 1996/1997 - No Doubt 1997 - Spice Girls, Jewel, LeAnn Rhymes 1998 - Celiene Dion, Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, Matchbox 20 1999 - Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, TLC 1999/2000 - Santana 2000 - NSYNC, Destiny's Child, Creed (unfortunately) 2001 - Alicia Keys, Ja Rule, Destiny's Child 2002 - Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Nelly 2003 - 50 Cent, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera 2003/2004 - Outkast 2004 - Usher, Maroon 5, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson 2004/2005 - Green Day 2005 - Green Day, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Kanye West 2006 - Justin Timberlake, Beyonce Alicia Keys should be in there for 2004, she was bigger than Britney and Jessica that year.

Most albums sold during the Billboard calender year, huge tour with soldout stadiums, and 2 top 10 Hot 100 hits.

While they've had a mighty successful year, when people think back on 2006, they won't think Rascal Flatts, moreso Beyonce & Justin, IMO. I will say this though: Both Beyonce & Justin had bigger years in their careers in 2003 (+ beginning of 04 for Beyonce).

People keep ignoring Janet's success in 2001. She was the highest earning female entertainer at that time. 7 weeks at number 1. a hit album. 1 gold single. 2 top 5 hits. a monster tour. Janet was also the ICON. Queen of Radio for 2001. All For You is the biggest international hit in the world in 2001. (3 in the US, 1 in Europe, 1 in Japan, 3 in South East Asia)

2001 was clearly Jennifer's year. She dominated since January!!! The J.Lo album and Wedding Planner went to #1 as I'm Real did. Love Don't Cost A Thing was a HUGE hit. Angel Eyes did ok, the J.Lo clothing line was a SMASH since it came out and she was just everywhere during that year!

angel eyes BOMBED! and her follow-up singles didn't do well (I'm Real and Ain't It Funny). They got Ja Rule to help J.Lo for the Remix of I'm Real. And i think J.Lo's movie was not a huge hit. It was a mild hit. Like the movie she did with richard gere. (60 million in the US) vs. The Klumps (120 million in the US).

J. Lo was EVERYWHERE that year, and mostly in a successful way. Nevermind that I'm Real and Ain't It Funny were "remixed" (i.e. made into completely different songs), they still both made it to #1 and she sold a lot of albums too. i'm not defending her really ,but I think there's a case for her being one of '01's It people.

First of all, Angel Eyes wasn't promoted as her other movies were, IF promoted at all. I honestly don't remember an interview about it. It still made 24 mill which isn't bad by any means. Second of all, regardless of the remix it was HER song after all. And plz, Shall We Dance came out like a year ago. If I'm not mistaken this isn't 2002 so what's the point of bringing up that movie? Exactly.

2001 was a big year for JLO, but I think 2002 was more her year. LDCAT and Play were hits, but they werent that big relativelt. Then she had I'm Real which was huge, but she really sealed the deal in 2002 with Aint It Funny and All I Have, and of course her merger with Ben Affleck to become Bennifer.

Jenny From The Block was also a SMASH hit and This Is Me Then sold well over 310k first week and sold 2.5 mill with two flop singles!

$24 million is pretty bad for the box office. On all other accounts however, JLO was a dominating force in 2001.

So just because you are a "dominating force" everything you release will be a hit? Right. Ask Mariah, Madonna, etc.
I just did my research and I didn't find ONE interview promoting that movie. It's actually one of the two J.Lo movies that I did not see in theaters either, oh, why's that? Yup, wasn't released in PR either.

All I said is that $24 million isn't a success of a movie released in the hype of Memorial Day with a very big star in it. I've been following the box office for 7-8 years and while AE wasn't an ultra-flop, it can't be looked at as a big success. Despite AE not adding to JLO's banner year, her 3 top 10 singles, Wedding Planner, JLO album and all the other hype that surrounded Jenny in '01 made her a dominating force.
