Help me make a list of what person(s) was/were the "it" people of each year. The best way to define what I'm talking about is simply to tell you that Usher is the current "it" person. The "it" person's singles get airplay before even being released, and race way up the charts with strong airplay cross-format. They also sell well with their album, have lots of label promotion, etc. etc. It doesn't always coincide with a calendar year, obviously.
So right now' it's clearly Usher. Before him, it was Beyoncé. She overlapped with 50 Cent. Before that I think it was Ashanti, if you count her collabos and not just her solo singles (since only "Foolish" did that well).
Then my mind is blurred out for a while and I can't think of who it was. I think Monica was actually an "it" girl from summer 1998 to spring 1999.
Help me fill in more!

Where's Avril on that list? She was obviously the "it" person that year.

Hmm... Avril... maybe yeah.
J.Lo definitely!
Maybe also Alicia Keys? "Falling" was huge and the album was, but the other singles weren't, so I hesitate.
I forgot about Britney and N'Sync.. mm, yup.
How about even further back. 1996 I can't think. Maybe that's another no-clear-winner year.
or could it be Biggie?

1996 was definitely Alanis's year. I'd say 1995 may have been Hootie's year.

and for 2003 what about Norah Joens and 50 cent? dont think there is 1 clear winner for every year. alot of people have big years at the same time. 50 cent rules the beginning of 2003 but beyocne took over at the end of it. But Beyocnes sales dont match 50 Cents so does that make him the clear cut winner??? Because at least 50 cents sales matched his hype...beyonces sales dont.
And also Eminem and Nelly both had big years in 2002. Hot in here and Dilemma were both HUGE records. But Emineme had huge records too...........this is much too difficult.

dont think there is 1 clear winner for every year. alot of people have big years at the same time. I said that in the beginning. 1998 isn't Brandy's year when she had 13+2 weeks at #1 and Monica had 13+5+4. You can't count Babyface either, that doesn't work.

You can't count Babyface either, that doesn't work. i'm sorry but brandy sold more albums with "Never say never" then Monica did with "the boy is mine." Actually every album brandy has made has sold more then Monica. Brandy was ather height in 1998. U can count all the singles u want to but if u dont have album sales to match...whats the point? Not to mention her tv show was the #1 black show on television at that time. AND not to mention her movies "cinderella" with Whitney, "Double platinum" with Diana Ross" and "i still know what u did last summer" 1998 was Brandys year collectively, plain and simple. not only in albums sales and singles but in entertainment as a WHOLE she dminated Monica. and I can count babyface, i can count anyone i choose.

I say 2002 was Eminem first, then Avril, then Nelly third.
1998 I say was Backstreet Boys. That was the year that they took over the charts. Or maybe Celine Dion, if only for the "Titanic" song. And don't forget Shania Twain; 1998 was the year she crossed over.
I agree that 1996 was definetly Alanis.
1995- Mariah Carey (Fantasy, One Sweet Day) or Hootie & The Blowfish (3 big singles, plus the year's # 1 album if I recall correctly).
1994 was Boyz II Men I think. They had their big album that year, plus two big # 1 hits.
Whitney Houston should have one, whatever year "Bodyguard" was out, 1992 or 1993.
1990 I agree was Janet.

'95 is either Hootie or Mariah, but I lean to Mariah because she fulfills what you said about singles getting airplay before released, cross-format airplay, etc. Fantasy & One Sweet Day were massive.

1995 could also be TLC.. they started off the year with "Creep" on top, "Red Light Special" was getting heavy aiprlay beofre "Creep" was done, and then we all know what happened with "Waterfalls."
1996 could also be the Fugees.
1997 was everything Bad Boy.... Puff Daddy, Biggie, Mase, Total, etc.

-I think that 1995 was a huge year for Gwen Stefani, with the smash that was Tragic Kingdom.
-1991 was definetely a major year for Kurt Cobain, with Nevermind and SLTS.

crazy sexy cool came out in 1994 with creep. What's your point? The album came out the last 2 weeks of the year and saw almost all its success in 1995.

No one beats Whitney Houston for 1993. She had 3 songs in the Top 11 at one time, just like Usher. Plus the Bodyguard soundtrack was flying off shelves. Certainly Toni Braxton doesn't top her.
And the only reason Jennifer Lopez got renewed airplay in 2001 was because of Ja Rule. Without him saving her ass, her singles following "Play" would have flopped, therefore I'd give him the credit over her. He had hits with the same songs she did, plus guested on a ton of other people's stuff and had his own hits.

Certainly Toni Braxton doesn't top her. . yea whitney had a good year but i picked Toni because she was a new artist and had a big break out. whitney was already established and sold tons of records and had tons of other hits before 1993. she had lots of big years since her debut. Eventhough 1993 was HUGE for whitney and she sold more records with the Bodyguard than toni...I thnk its was a big year for toni, he had lots of hit singles off that album, I believe it was 6 and selling over 10 million on your debut album isnt shabby at all. And Toni was differet...she had short hair, a deep voice and was something brand new to the r&b world. I think a BIG debut as an artist has more meaning and signifigance than when u are an already established artist who had 3 other successful albums and similar big years in the past. So for it being toni's massive debut I give it to her for 1993. It may not be right but its my opinion lol.

What's this argument over Brandy? She shouldn't have a year regardless.

I agree Brandy wasn't "It" in 1998. It's between BSB and Shania Twain.

You can't really choose just one person for the year. Probably three or four since an artist's "it" thing might last for maybe 1/3 of the year.
Gwen's "rule" with No Doubt would have been during the Winter of 96/97. Babyface for 'Waiting To Exhale', if you can consider him an "it" artist for that time (I wouldn't), would have been early 1996.

What's this argument over Brandy? She shouldn't have a year regardless. BlueNote's list contradicts itself ten times anyway. I'll take Tony's list and run with it. 1990: Janet Jackson, Wilson Phillips 1991: Mariah Carey 1992: Michael Jackson 1993: Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton 1994: Boyz II Men ~TLC 1995: Mariah Carey, Hootie & The Blowfish 1996: Alanis Morissette 1997: Puff Daddy/BadBoy 1998: Not sure, BSB I guess. ~Monica, Brandy 1999: Britney Spears 2000: 'N Sync 2001: Ja Rule, J. Lo 2002: Nelly, Eminem 2003: 50 Cent, Beyoncé ~Outkast 2004: Usher The squiggles are specific ones I can think of who spanned the years.
