Clay posted on his fanclub and said this new album will be covers of famous love songs from the last 25 years and a few original songs.
What do you think of this and will this album be mega successful or will it have mediocre success in comparison to his debut album?
Opinions.....

I think it could go either way. It could be a huge flop or a big hit. I think it's all going to depend on what the covers are, and how many original songs there are. Mostly I think it will depend on how the productions of the songs are. I'm a huge fan of his voice but I'm not 100% committed to buying it if I don't like the covers he chooses or if they overproduce it like they did his first CD. It'll be interesting to see how the promo goes.

My initial reaction is yuck and double yuck. The lack of original songs on a relatively young new artists highly anticipated sophmore album is not progressive and sends a really bad vibe about the artists creative abilities. If Aiken could have found, interpreted, and produced an album full of great original music - he absolutely would have - that will be in everyones mind when the album comes out - especially the critics.

Unfortunately, I think his album is doomed, no matter what.

I think for an artist still trying to find his place and identity in the music industry, it is way too early to be putting out an album with mostly covers.
It'll sell well cause he has lots of fans. But I am dissapointed. I wanted to hear what the real Clay Aiken music about if he actually had time to make an album.

I think it'll sell well too. I think it was a lame move but they're just milking his fans for dough, in my opinion.

I certainly am not in a position to second guess Clive Davis. I think he knows that Clay's strength is in his ability to interpret good lyrics with strong melodies. People don't get tired of listening to great songs. While I would like to hear original music from Clay, I don't see how he can fail with the direction he is taking with this album, especially considering the diversity of ages of his fan base. I think lots of people will enjoy hearing him sing old favourites, while the songs will be new for younger listeners.

This'll be a hit with his core fanbase, however it's not going to win him any new fans unlike what Breakaway did for Kelly.

Why wouldn't it win him new fans? It might not make you a fan but not everyone has the same taste in music that you might have. Michael Buble has been able to develop a big following with his cover cds. I don't see why Clay can't do the same.

Isn't Michael's biggest CD his latest one, which contains his hit single that was an original?
I dunno. I think the CD might be successful for fans of Barry Manilow and other cover songs singers or singers like them but otherwise, he's moving away from the mainstream and since Clay's biggest fanbase are fans of the most mainstream music, it might not do him good.

There are going to be several originals on the new album - "Home" is the only original song on Buble's.
I won't lie, this is not what I was expecting. But I think it could work. it seems like it's way harder to find decent original songs for male pop singers than female ones for some reason. idiots like Ashlee Simpson can find genuinely good hooks, while Nick Lachey's new album is basically 12 different versions of "What's Left of Me". i'm assuming that the originals on there will be pretty strong. i'm just hoping that the songs they choose to cover are not overdone and are less well known and that the production is good. i'm optomistic on that, because it's been taking awhile to make, unlike his first. Clive Davis is obviously a huge influence on going this route, and he probably knows what he's doing, and will probably put in the promotion to go along with it.
I think it could sell well. the fans will get it, and I also think he'll reach some people that didn't necessarily buy his first album because it wasn't exactly what they were expecting. It's rare that albums have multiple smash hits on them, so if one or two radio hits could break that would be great.

Too early for him to put out a covers album. I really would have liked to see what this 2nd album would have been like with him having greater control of its content. :(

It'll sell fairly well to his core fanbase but far below his debut and miss new fans completely. Dud.

It's given him a rich cheesy career so far. No doubt the album will be full of cheese for all his cheese loving Claymate fans. He might get his first endorsement deal from the American Cheese Council unless the tabloids get him first - and they're waiting for him with looooooong knives.

I still think it's curious that his 2nd album will be mostly covers and not many original songs. It on first look seems to be a gamble, but on the other hand, Clive Davis to me is still the man and his decision to go this way could mean success for the album.
I'm not a big Clay fan mostly because of the music he has put out so far, but I wish whatever songs are on the album, that some at least get radio play for one reason alone. I am sick and tired of the mates whining that he never got airplay because the label used all their money paying off the radio stations to play other artists songs. As far as I'm concerned, he didn't get much play because the songs on MOAM just sucked, pure and simple. So this time around I wish he has some songs that the listeners want to hear and not just what the mates think is good.

I don't think Aiken is a viable contender for Pop or Hot AC. If the rumors of a cover album are true that validates his labels concession of this. I've read elsewhere several times and agree it appears his label, RCA, is content to milk Aikens fanatical older fanbase and won't spend much money on album promotion since it would be wasted anyway. The people who're going to buy a Clay Aiken album will buy it regardless of whether it's on the radio or not and many of his fanatical fans will buy multiple copies to spite the lack of radio play. RCA is in a win-win situation with the album as long as Aiken can steer clear of a career ending scandal. The rumors are there are several more salacious gay sexcapades still to come out - including one involving an underage male. Perez Hilton and most of the other popular gossip blogs have accurately reported every Aiken scandal so far so they have s o m e credibility regarding these rumors. ETA - Heres some unequivocal evidence that spendng money on album promotion for Clay Aiken would be a foolish waste of money: By Ken Barnes, USA TODAY American Idol's Season 5 Encores anthology was overshadowed by the Dixie Chicks but still managed the best first-week sales for a finalists' collection with 154,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (Previous sales: Season 1, 146,000; Season 2, 101,000; Season 3, 55,000; Season 4, 83,000.) That's good enough for a No. 3 debut on Billboard's chart next week, behind the Chicks and High School Musical's new deluxe edition. Idol Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood returned to the top 10, selling 65,000 (almost double the previous week) after performing on the Idol results show (and the competing ACM Awards). Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken, who also sang on Idol, did not fare so well, however, selling 2,000 copies of Measure of a Man, up from 500 the previous week.Other Idol finale performers showed mixed results: Live registered a nearly fivefold gain (2,100-9,700) and Prince climbed to 21,000 from 13,000. But Mary J. Blige was up only 3% and Toni Braxton dropped from 4,800 to 4,400. The rest of the top 10: the debut of Angels & Airwaves at No. 4, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rascal Flatts, the debuts of Don Omar and WWE: Reckless Intent, Tool, and Underwood. www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2006-05-31-idol-cd-sales_x.htm----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 45-50 million viewers saw Clays new "DO" makeover and performance on the Idol finale and it only managed to gain him 1500 net CD sales. Thats pretty lame.

Yes, a 300% sales increase for a nearly 3-year-old album that isn't even stocked anymore in most stores after singing part of a song that isn't featured on it is sooo horrible. NOT.
idaho, I honestly wonder where you get all your "inside" information, other than from the voices in your head. I've heard other people with industry connections mention a swelling positive buzz about this album, which I honestly wasn't expecting. They may or may not be lying, but I doubt they're any less truthful than you are ;)

You deny all the factual evidence of anything that paints Aiken in any light you don't like and chase it down with another cup of Claymate Koolaid. It's called D E N I A L splitchick, and I'd stay away from the Koolaid. eta- 1500 sales generated from an audience of 50 Million is unequivocal evidence Aiken has built NO new fans and didn't gain any on the finale. Most of those sales were probably Claymates trying to pump up Aikens position on Amazon. yeeeech.

Aww, it's so sweet to see the biggest kelbot is still obsessed with Clay even with his new screen name. ;) If Clay's still got the haters hating over 3 years later I think he'll still have fans waiting to hear his new music.

Clay singing covers is what he does best. Since songs the style of music he sings is more ballads like Elton John isn't going to be huge radio hits anymore since the urban music invasion but his voice is amazing and no matter what he will sell over 1 million and likely over 2 million without much promotion and without a radio hit which is amazing since some albums with huge radio hits haven't even sold anywhere near this amount.

I wish they would hurry up and issue a press release in regards to the CD release date and any concert dates in support of the tour. I wonder how big of venues they will start this era in?

Why are people yelling at idaho for something that Ken Barnes reported in USA Today. USA Today is a pretty big publication, maybe the claymates should yell at Ken Barnes instead.

Sandy, I don't see anybody yelling at idaho/7thFairway/tidetoit/groucho. Splitchick was merely saying that there was nothing wrong with Clay's sales since the album is almost three years old and hard to find. He sang a few lines from a song that isn't even on his album as a joke. I doubt they expected to sell CDs so much as create some buzz.
