Vanessa Carlton on Chapter 3 of her Fairytale3/23/08 - 11:32 PM ET By Carli Stephens-Rothman (andPOP) - Once upon a time, the undoubtedly talented Vanessa Carlton had seen her fair share of unhappy endings. After becoming a megastar with the smash single "A Thousand Miles," Carlton saw her second album, "Harmonium," fare terribly on the charts upon its release in 2004, which resulted in her subsequent release from A&M Records. The third time, however, may be the charm for Carlton's fairytale career, as the release of album No. 3, "Heroes and Thieves," put the 26-year-old Jill-of-all-trades back on the map. "I look at this [album] as a musical story book. It's really my first concept record," Carlton proudly explains to andPOP. "Basically, I just piled up these experiences from the past, from the year leading up to [this], and every song on the album represents a defined period in my life, or a question, or a lesson learned. It became this really cohesive record." "Heroes and Thieves," as Carlton describes it, follows the format of a fairytale, and similarly, the songs symbolize different chapters in her life leading up to now. The songs are like a timeline, mapping Carlton's growth as an artist, and a woman as well. "You can notice the fundamental changes in the approach to my work that comes with experience. I have a very clear vision now and awareness when it comes to music," she says with a certain confidence, sounding far beyond her years. "The whole process was like a midnight arts and crafts session. It was all written and recorded in those enchanted hours, the ones that are most alive, and most kinetic." Putting the album together, under Irv Gotti's label The Inc., was a labour of love for Carlton. Coincidentally, her latest single "Hands on Me," addresses labours of love in a literal sense. "This song reflects such an intensity about vying for somebody else," Carlton says. According to her, longing for the affections of another is "such a universal situation, everyone can relate." The lyrics, which were in part crafted by her ex-boyfriend Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind, are filled with a concentrated, yet tender passion that reads through in the song's music video. Taking place in an understated boudoir, Carlton rolls around in bed fantasizing about a man whom she met at the video exchange – certainly a touch racier than the video for "A Thousand Miles" where she rode a piano off her driveway and down the street. A piano on wheels became an image closely associated with Carlton since the video for "A Thousand Miles" appeared on MTV and music channels across the globe in 2002. Wanting to separate herself from the image, although beautiful, Carlton decided that she would counter the icon by smashing a piano with a car in her video for "Nolita Fairytale," her first single off her latest album. "I felt it was the perfect parlay into the new chapter, resurrecting the old image of the moving piano, which was lovely, but in order for me to move forward, I guess I had to run it over," she says with a laugh as she describes the opening scene of the music video that debuted this fall. The scene symbolized transition from the old Vanessa to the new Vanessa. But aside from the abstract meaning, "it was just really fun to hit a piano with a car." The album focuses on matters of the heart, the search for identity, and the discovery of happiness, as it mirrors Carlton's personal quest for the same. However Carlton's whole life isn't lived strictly in song. "I actually draw, and I love to go treasure hunting in [New York], to find people's old photos and stuff. I love interior design, and estate sales, I take long walks, and I'm trying to start a stationary line to resurrect the art of the written note," she says, as her dog bounces around on her knees. "I'm sorry, my dog just jumped up on to my lap," she laughs apologetically as she struggles to keep the phone in her grasp. "His name is Lord Victor," she says of her brown-haired dachshund, "and he's very handsome. I like to think that he [was once] an all knowing, omnipotent professor of 'something' from the 1880s." With a dog by her side, a new label, a fairytale life in Nolita, and hopes that her album can start climbing the charts faster than Jack climbed his beanstalk, Vanessa Carton, it can be assumed, is destined to continue to make music, and live happily ever after. The End.

Late album review: Heroes and ThievesVanessa Carlton Motown Rating 4 (out of five)After splitting with her record label A&M in 2005, piano-pop princess Vanessa Carlton signed with The Inc. (formerly Murder Inc.), best known for hip-hop and R&B acts such as Ja Rule and Ashanti. Despite her new label, nowhere on her third album, Heroes and Thieves, does the 27-year-old with the childlike voice rap. Nor are there any duets with rappers. Fans of Carlton's White Chicks anthem "A Thousand Miles" will be relieved that her album is effervescent Carleton offering a number of songs that are reflections on life and love, documenting Carlton's recent (mis)adventures in her adopted home of New York with ex-boyfriend (and producer) Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind. Carlton comes off like an angst-afflicted teenager even though she is rhapsodizing about rent-controlled apartments. Don't skip "The One," on which Carlton duets with Stevie Nicks, which is a mildly bitter dose of heartbreak. -- Kelly-Anne Riess

Based on a December 14th article in Entertainment Weekly, her last reported sales figures seem to be: I guess since it's been about 5 months (with sales declining each week) since then, her album should be around the 70-80k mark.

I think that 70-80k is still too high, id assume it would be somewhere between 50-60k at best.

OMG. That's so sad that Vnasty is playing the Middle East. It's a dive bar in Cambridge, MA! I love it there though but most bands I have seen there (with the exception of Dizzee Rascal) are unknowns and locals. Oh well. I think I will have to go!

Vanessa Carlton: She's a Tucson snowbirdBy Kevin W. Smith KSMITH@AZSTARNET.COM Tucson, Arizona | Published: 07.10.2008 When you think of Tucson snowbirds, chances are Vanessa Carlton isn't the image that comes to mind. Yet the 27-year-old pop star has been coming to the Old Pueblo every year, usually during the winter months, since she was 2. Her father was a pilot and would come here for flight safety programs, bringing the family along. Carlton, who made a name with early-decade Top 40 hits "A Thousand Miles," "Ordinary Day" and "White Houses," is an avid horseback rider and frequent guest at the Tanque Verde Ranch. "It's been a part of my childhood and my life, really," Carlton said. When in town, she usually rides horses, hikes, runs and drinks — just not Downtown. Save for the odd trip to the emergency room after getting thrown off a horse, Carlton has never really spent much time in the city. "I go out there because I like to be on the outskirts — literally in the middle of nowhere," she said. "Arizona is one of my most favorite spots in the world, particularly outside of Tucson and outside of Phoenix. There's such incredible preserves and desert." Carlton will get a taste of Tucson's night life when she plays an all-ages show at Club Congress Tuesday. When we spoke with her earlier this month, she was at home in New York City and on her way to meet with someone else who is familiar with Arizona, native Stevie Nicks. Nicks has become something of a mentor to Carlton, after the pair were tour mates, and makes a guest appearance on Carlton's 2007 album, "Heroes and Thieves." Carlton's third album displays much the same touch for melody and piano-led pop she has always had, coupled with her trademark breathy, whimsical voice. Carlton keeps the sharp orchestral dress-up to her songs on "Heroes and Thieves," but the album also finds her exploring more complicated emotions than the wild-eyed love-struck sound of "A Thousand Miles." The lead single, "Nolita Fairytale," has her shrugging off record contracts, "My Best" sees Carlton cradling a broken relationship, and the title track finds her trying to see clear through confusion. The album was released last year, but Carlton said she's still living the tales on "Heroes and Thieves." "I'm just still figuring out the answers to some of these songs," she said.

I'll be at the show in Nashville. Joshua Radin is fantastic!!! You should consider sticking around for a song or two, though he will probably allure annoying teenage girls... I saw her back in 05 with Ari Hest and he did the same thing.

I'm sad her second and third album didn't fare as well as the first one's. I really enjoy Vanessa. She's extremely talented and deserves success! She and Mandy Moore and very similar in my opinion. Both need more success!

Both need more success! V's very talented... she just doesn't seem at all interested in making saleable music/videos at the moment... but hey, it's her career. If she wants to kill it, then that's her biz I guess. :(

She's not killing her career; she's still touring all the time and making fantastic records. A music career does not equal number one singles. She doesn't want fame.
I keep listening to this album lately. 'My Best' and 'The One' are too too beautiful.

I hope she finds some way to continue making cds. She has been the most consistent artist ever for me (Well, consistent newer artist-I have a hard time comparing artists from the 50s-80s that I love with artists who just started careers in the 2000s ) I have loved every bit of every cd and unreleased stuff too. I just really want her to continue making music :( Hopefully her clothing line at least made her some money so she does not go bankrupt or some shit.

H&T made its way back into rotation earlier this week. Such a good album - The Inc. could've tried a little harder to promote it to radio.

Singer Vanessa Carlton bitten by dog in N.E. Pa.5/7/10 - 1 hr 40 mins ago SHOHOLA, Pa. – The father of singer Vanessa Carlton says his daughter was bitten by a pit bull while jogging near his northeastern Pennsylvania home. Carlton's father, Ed, says his daughter is being treated with antibiotics following the May 2 incident in Shohola, about 100 miles north of Philadelphia. Ed Carlton says his daughter was jogging along a road when a neighbor's dog bit her leg. Animal control officials have put the dog under a 10-day home quarantine. The state Department of Agriculture says a dog warden will examine the dog at the end of quarantine for signs of illness. The 29-year-old songstress is best known for her 2002 hit "A Thousand Miles." She released her third album in 2007.
