People act like she's this icon/legend, but in reality she's only had 5 TOP TEN radio hits! I was looking at her history and surprised to see this! Even, Paula Abdul had more hits than her. I'm really shocked by this. She is overrated in my book!

There's more to success and acclaim than how many radio hits one has.
How many radio hits has Led Zepplin had? Or Metallica? Or Pink Floyd? Those are some of the biggest selling bands even still today.
But judging by the number of radio hits Tina has had, maybe she's underrated?

Those are some of the biggest selling bands even still today. But judging by the number of radio hits Tina has had, maybe she's underrated? It's not like she sold that many albums either. She's sold around 40 million worldwide, which is a nice feat...but many current artists today have ALREADY sold that much like Usher, Christina, etc. You and I have had this discussion many times before regarding success and sales, and we always seem to run in circles. And you really can't compare rock bands like Metallica to Tina Turner. Their success is different because they have huge album sales and rule the ROCK charts (which doesn't make them big on the Hot 100), but an artist like Tina Turner who is mainstream...sales and airplay matter.

We have. I don't know what purpose asking if Tina is overrated serves tho. She's been around for as long as Cher and made a huge comeback in 1984 after a long time away and a lot of personal problems. She might not have sold a lot of records but she sure has overcome a lot and is very well known to boot. By making this topic, it's almost as if you're saying she doesn't deserve to be treated like a legend because she hasn't had as big of album sales as others. I, personally, would call her a legend because she's been able to do what she's done for as long as she has. And since I mentioned Cher, I'd call Cher a legend too.
And I don't rely on album sales and radio hits to determine that but they sure can help!

Sales and airplay aren't everything. Though I guess not many people on this board would get that.

A lot of her sales issues come from promotional problems (due to label situations etc.) especially during her early career. Also note that her early career came at a time when being Black was going to give problems with a large segment of the population, especially in conjunction with her image. That very image, however, and the boldness that to this day characterizes her performance style, is very much part of her impact. The huge popularity of the film What's Love Got to Do With It should also give some idea of her cultural impact. That is to say, not only is her story worth telling, but people want to hear it, and can derive value from it.
But leaving all of that behind, even, the woman has made some damn fine music. By failing to tone her stuff down so that it'd be palatable to White audiences, Turner lost a lot in commercialism, but not in artistry. Consider the raw soul of records like "Bold Soul Sister" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)." Consider the masterpiece that is "River Deep, Mountain High." Consider the way she was able to take "Proud Mary," a song that many other R&B and soul acts before her had cut with limited success, and turn it into something huge all over again. Consider the intricate vocals she executes on a song like "I Don't Want to Fight." Throughout her career, Turner has been able to bring much to her field.
Please note that I am not claiming that she alone is the reason why these records turned out as they did. I recognize the contributions of others (Ike Turner, Phil Spector, etc.), but I submit the claim that, given all the same personnel except Tina Turner being replaced, these records would still be lacking as compared to their actualities.
To summarize, a lot of her music has been extremely high quality, and commercial statistics are not what it takes to be legendary. I, too, would call Tina Turner a legend.
And in answer to the original question: no freakin' way.

There is far more the a musical "legend" than merely sales and radio hits. There is also musical quality, musical and cultural influences as well. So based on this thread, the blues legends who directly influenced the likes of the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin etc. like Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson etc., whose work was copied and molded into popular Rock n. Roll are not legends because they did not have radio hits. She's sold around 40 million worldwide, which is a nice feat...but many current artists today have ALREADY sold that much like Usher, Christina, etc. You are off a bit on those numbers. Private Dancer - Sales worldwide: 20 million Break Every Rule - Sales worldwide: 12 million Tina Live in Europe - Sales worldwide: 6 million Foreign Affair - Sales worldwide: 9 Million Simply the Best - Sales worldwide: 10 million What's Love Got to Do with It - Sales worldwide: 13 million Wildest Dreams - Sales worldwide: 6 million Twenty Four Seven - Sales worldwide: 3 million All The Best - Sales worldwide: 5.5 million Based on those numbers, she has sold 84.5 million albums, and this is only her solo career. This does not include her Ike & Tina Turner albums, which would push her career totals beyond 100 million. Tina also set a world record for largest concert ever in Brazil, with more than 184,000 people attending her show and has had massive dollar grosses with her 1990's tours. I think all that Tina has accomplished more than establishes her as a legend.

Artists are not rated by sales or airplay, that's statistics. Artists are rated by quality. Tina is not overrated to me.

I don't think she's as big as they tried to make her out to be last night. The only thing I know her from is "Proud Mary" and that crazy dance. Aretha, Whitney, Diana . . . these people were all bigger R&B female acts, IMO.

Tina isn't really an R&B act tho. She's soul. They're related but also quite different. Tina was also a rocker for some of her career. In a time when women and rock didn't mix, nor black people and rock. Tina was both AND she had some rockin' songs! She might not have done a whole lot this decade but she's had her time and she served up some fabulous dishes!
BTW, I once saw a Tina video last year that was crazy and it had a crazy robot on it and the song itself was crazy. Something from the late 60s, I imagine, but I'm pretty sure it was solo Tina. Does anyone know what that song is? Because I want it!

^ Could the video be from the Tommy (based on The Who's album) movie? She played the Acid Queen in it. As for Tina's musical style, I don't think she can be categorized. She did EVERYTHING! Country, blues, rock & roll, R&B, soul, rock and dance too in the late 90's (in the wake of the success of Cher's "Believe"). Re: the topic of the thread, she's not overrated IMO. She has the sales, the hits (she's actually always been successful in Europe, even with her dance stuff, LOL), the successful tours, the critical acclaim. Also, she survived Ike's terrible abuse, that's no small feat. She's a legend!

I completely agree. Tina is not overrated at all. She deserves her praise! Totally! She is quite underrated. She may not have had many radio/sales hits, but she has been around a while. I love her version of "Proud Mary". It's absolutely fantastic. I also liked "What's Love Got To Do With It", "Simply The Best", "I Don't Wanna Fight" and the recent offerings "Goldeneye" (that was sooo hot!) and "When The Heartache Is Over."

Her voice may be practically gone, but she's certainly not overrated... she's done a whole lot in this industry!

If for whatever reason you manage to work yourself into the pop-culture icon universe...HOW you get there is really not that important.

Maybe because of when I grew up, I could easily list more Tina Turner songs than I could Aretha Franklin songs.

Being an icon is about the impact u make on people, the music industry and those who come after u. The only thing thats overrated is measuring success by how many top 10 records u have.

An overrated artist gets much attention and recognition for their work. I don't really see Tina Turner getting much of either. I agree with Max.

You're totally missing the mark about what makes you a legend- she is one of the greatest performers in music- and she's been around forever, before the Beatles. With your logic, K.C. and the Sunshine Band are legends.
