CMA will announce nominees on Sept. 10 from NYC, Nashville
The announcement of the final nominees for the 2008 CMA Awards will be carried live Wed., Sept. 10, on network and cable television from the "Good Morning America" studios in the heart of New York City's Times Square on the ABC Television Network, and from the Sommet Center in Nashville on a special edition of CMT's "CMT Insider."
"The 42nd Annual CMA Awards" will be broadcast live from the Sommet Center in Nashville Wed., Nov. 12 (8:00-11:00 PM ET) on ABC.
"Having 'Good Morning America' and 'CMT Insider' broadcast our CMA Awards final nominees live brings a heightened level of excitement to these highly-anticipated announcements," said CMA Chief Executive Officer Tammy Genovese. "These special broadcasts will allow fans across the nation to experience the same excitement our artists and industry feel as the names are announced for the first time by our hosts. "
The final nominees in select categories will be announced live on national television during "Good Morning America" with Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift during the 8:30 AM/ET half-hour of the morning news program.
"We're excited to be a part of the live CMA nominee announcements on 'Good Morning America'," notes Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, who also serves on the CMA Board of Directors. "We had our first CMA win in 2002 and know how thrilling it is to hear your name called out as a nominee, so we're glad to be the one’s to share that good news."
Broadcasting live from Nashville, CMT's Katie Cook and Lance Smith will present exclusive coverage of the remaining 2008 CMA Awards nominee announcements in a special half-hour edition of "CMT Insider."
Following the announcements on "Good Morning America," CMT will go live with two of the hottest and most innovative acts in Country Music today, Lady Antebellum and James Otto, as they reveal the remaining CMA Awards nominees. Following the nominations, Cook and Smith will interview nominees and examine the categories and evaluate the finalists.

I guess Rascal Flatts will have to wait a little while longer before they can win their first Entertainer award. Of course, it might take just as long for the stank from Bob That Head to wear off...
Will this be Brad's time to win his first Entertainer, or does Kenny throw yet another trophy on his pile?
I gotta think Stay will sweep both song awards, and maybe even video, even though I'll be hoping WOAW wins the latter. They won't actually memorialize Shiftwork with an award, will they?
Album and New Artist look to be closest races.

I'm a little miffed that Reba nor LeAnn Rimes weren't nominated for female vocalist. Both ladies (especially Reba) had much better sales records and activity on the singles charts than both Alison and Martina. I will give it to Alison that she had a great album come out, but still.

Best Female VocalistAlison Krauss I knew we couldn't go a year without having Alison Krauss nominated for something. I have nothing at all against her or her voice (as a matter of fact, I think she's an amazing talent!), but adding her to categories as nothing more than a "field-filler" year after year after year gets pretty tiring.

I agree, especially categories that don't need 'field-filling'. There were plenty of artists (Reba, Trisha, LeAnn, even Kellie or Julianne) that could have been nominated instead.

i'm actually surprised julianne hough or chuck wicks wasn't nominated for best new artist, and why in the world a 6 week number one, "our song" has nothing to show for...?!

^EXACTLY! This is gettin' old but it is so apparent they are trying to prevent certain acts from getting nominated.
The biggest shock in these nominations are that Trace Adkins has been recognized for the first time in a very long time, although not in FMV, but he was nominated three times! He is one of the usuals that does not see any nominations.
I predict this year will be the year of change. Kenny will be dethroned from his EOTY seat, there may be a shocker in the FVOTY category, AOTY could be interesting, as well as NAOTY. Although we have a list of 'usual' nominees, we could have 'unusual' winners this time around, I honestly believe this.

I think Martina's Female Vocalist nom is worse than Alison's nom. What has Martina done in the past year? At least Alison had the CD with Robert Plant and maybe some leftover stuff from her hits collection.
Taylor has had a huge year to have momentum for Female Vocalist, but has such a weak singer ever won Female Vocalist? I don't know whom to call the favorite in that one. They may want to reward Miranda since her album was ineligible.

Sugarland for EOTY surprises me. By the end of this year, Carrie's 2008 tour will have played to over 1 million fans (I know the naysayers will say that total is inflated by Keith Urban. But she did have co-headlining billing with him on that tour so it still counts). I think Carrie's played to more fans than Sugarland this year. (I realize that's not the only criteria for the award since Rascal Flatts has played to more fans, too). I do like Sugarland and I am happy to see someone new in the mix. I'm just saying if it came down to Sugarland and Carrie for the 5th spot, I would've liked to have seen Carrie get the nod. I realize I'm biased, but I do think she's done enough to earn a nomination this year. But kudos to Sugarland for breaking through! Im shocked TS doesnt have a single/song of the year nomination with "OS" That is surprising, but maybe the intentional crossover to pop/top40 (remixing the song to give it a pop sound) turned off some voters.

I don't agree that Alison Krauss is merely a "field filler." If you're looking at commercial impact, her duets album with Robert Plant has sold nearly 1.1 million copies since its release last October despite no mainstream country radio airplay. And that album is still charting on the all-genre top-200. She has also co-headlined a successful tour during the eligibility period. And, commercial impact aside, Raising Sand drew rave reviews. I'm pleased she continues to be recognized in the FVotY field. I don't think that field needs to be limited to just those who get some kind of airplay on mainstream country radio.
As for Martina, I'm surprised to see her nominated when neither Reba nor Trisha made the cut. Reba had a more commercially impactful year in album sales, touring and airplay (and her Duets album was pretty well-reviewed), while Trisha's album got rave reviews and charted a top-20 single during the eligibility period. Ah well.
Cowboy Town in the AotY category surprises me, but that sets up a fun battle between EotY nominee Sugarland and AotY nominee Brooks & Dunn in the Duo of the Year category.
I think "Just Got Started Lovin' You" got jobbed in the Single of the Year category, but looking at that list, I would want to replace only "Don't Blink" and I don't have strong objections to its presence in that category. But "Good Time" in Song of the Year? I would have much rather seen AJ nominated for "Small Town Southern Man." I'm glad the CMAs came through with a nod for "Letter to Me." I'm also glad to see Carrie in the FVotY and AotY categories. An EotY nod would have been nice, but it's not such a bad thing for her to have the chance to further mature as a performer before she gets that nod.

I know they have to fill the category but Big & Rich for Duo and the Wreckers seems stupid. Big Kenny was out most of the year and did they even have a song on the radio? The Wreckers are currently doing solo albums and I'm pretty sure they had nothing in the past year on the radio. It just seems weird. I know they won't win, but why should they be nominated?

Yeah, The Wreckers nomination was crazy. Isn't this their 3rd year in a row in that category, based on 1 album? Or maybe I am confusing one of their ACM nods with a CMA nod. Either way, they haven't done anything in the past year to merit that nod...and I'm a fan of their CD!

Im shocked TS doesnt have a single/song of the year nomination with "OS" I was surprised also. It did have the long holiday "sweet spot" during that 6 weeks stay though. It still was a huge hit for her. I'm thinking the country music "establishment" still doesn't like the tweaking of supposedly country songs for pop music play. jmo

I'd take Taylor and Kenny's voices any day over Tim McGraw and Gretchen Wilson, both winners. Our Song being left out isn't much of a surprise. Award shows tend to recognize slow to mid-tempo songs with more meaning, as opposed to uptempo, "fun" songs. A song's chart performance has very little to do with it. (Though with that said, the holiday "sweet spot" doesn't make much sense to me -- while new songs aren't released in that time period, those aren't the ones who would compete for #1. In addition, there's not much historical basis for songs coasting through the period at #1 -- chart seems to move as usual, at the top. So, the OS run was certainly legitimate -- but as I said, that's not a top priority for the awards and it shouldn't come as a shocker.) I think Sugarland stands to be the big winner from this. Stay clearly stands out more than the other singles, song or video, and Duo of the Year should be a lock. They won't get EOTY, but to have 3-4 awards out of this and the entertainer nom at this stage in their career would be pretty big.

Album of the Year seems to be the worst category.
Other than that, I didn't see any surprises.

With the prospect of "Keep You" being SL's third single from LOTI, you have to wonder where they will be sitting this time next year? Early poll - Better or Worse?

Typical nominees.
Martina being nominated for Female Vocalist while doing absolutly nothing the past year is getting REAL old.
I wonder if B&D will win another award in which Sugarland and MG are more deserving.
When they put The Eagles for Duo, you know they are lacking nominees. Same thing with The Wreckers.
I also don't see how Sugarland for EOTY is surprising. I think it's obvious that they have to be there.....and they will be there every year for years to come.
"Shiftwork", while its the worst song in the Musical Event category, will win - because it's Kenny AND George and because it had the most success.
This gets more boring and predictable each year.

CONGRATS SUGARLAND!!! I am so happy they got nominated for EotY! I was hoping Carrie would get in too, but its OK because she will get in there eventually. I hope she wins AotY, easily the best in that category. Entertainer: Carrie has done more than Keith in the last year, but its not a big surprise they picked him over her. LOVE the Sugarland nom. Brad will win. (hopefully) but i would also love to see a Sugarland upset Male: exactly what i thought Brad will win. and he should Female: I cannot believe Alison and Martina got nominated over Reba, Kellie, LeAnn, Sara, or Trisha. RIP OFF!!! Carrie will and should win. Group: exactly what i thought Rascal Flatts will win, although I am pulling for Lady Antebellum Duo: why The Wreckers? they have been off radio for over a year! Why not give the nom to Van Zant (who at least released an album and 2 singles within the time period) or Halfway to Hazard who had 2 moderate hits, and album and toured with Tim McGraw this year. that was a big upset, everything else is no surprise though. Sugarland better win. New Artist: JASON ALDEAN and RODNEY ATKINS!?!?!? NO! Neither are new, they both have had 4 or more big hits since 2005. Their time period has expired. Glad Kellie and Lady Antebellum got nominated though! It would have been good to see Julianne Hough and Luke Bryan nominated instead of Rodney and Jason. Hoping Kellie/Lady A wins! Album: GO CARRIE! Glad she got the nomination, hopefully she wins! Kenny, George, and Alan were obvious even if they didn't have spectacular albums by any means. But Brooks & Dunn's nomination completely puzzles me. How can an album get nominated in AotY when the album lacks even one good song? Lady Antebellum got snubbed in that category! or even Reba, Josh Turner, Little Big Town, LeAnn, Josh Gracin, Julianne Hough, or Chris Cagle who have all had amazing albums in the last year could have been nominated instead. Carnival Ride should win, Good Time will win. Single/Song: nothing real surprising. kind of shocked at G&L being nominated, but not disappointed. i would have liked to see "So Small" nominated, but its ok. Sugarland will sweep both easily and they should. Video: not surprising at all. would have liked Carrie to be in there though. Sugarland or Brad will win, or maybe Alan. hopefully Sugarland does. Music Event: not surprising at all. i wish Billy Ray/Miley would have gotten it over Alison/Robert though. Kenny/George will win, Sugarland/LBT/Jake should win.

Pretty run of the mill nominees in my book. Sugarland getting a EOTY nom was a mild surprise, b/c Rascal Flatts and Tim appeared to be better candidates, but it's not a big deal. Martina was a big surprise, but it really shouldn't have come as any surprise, b/c the CMA's have a love affair with her similar to the one they had for Vince Gill in the 90's. Although Carrie is the favorite, FVOTY is a wide-open race, and i think any of the candidates could win. The two biggest surprises to me were the Eagles being nominated for group, but NOT album (if anything, I thought it would be the other way around); and Good Time for Song. Isn't song supposed to go to the songwriters for the best written song. And they couldn't find a 5th choice better than Good Time? Really? Better As a Memory, Laughed Until We Cried, Home, Just Got Started Lovin' You, and Small Town Southern Man would have all made much, much more sense.

Obviously, I'm disappointed with the Reba absence from FV but she wasn't going to win anyway. I was mostly wanting a performance. I guess Rascal Flatts will have to wait a little while longer before they can win their first Entertainer award. Of course, it might take just as long for the stank from Bob That Head to wear off... I think RF should be concerned. They obviously can't be denied a group nomination but to have no other presence may show that the more conservative CMAs has tolerated them long enough.

This isn't the first time they've been shunned, and most certainly won't be the last. It's insane that they were overlooked for EOTY, especially when you look at the criteria for nominees in that category, but not really surprising considering their history with the CMAs. *shrugs* Sugarland being nominated in their place was what was surprising about it. All in all it's pointless since we all know that Kenny will win it anyways. ;)

There are so many surprises this year! Sugarland nominated for Entertainer of the Year! Jason Aldean and Rodney Atkins in the new artist category! No Taylor or Carrie song for single/song of the year! This seems really strange.

The nominees are certainly no shock. It's the same stuff every year.
I could go ramble forever but I'll stick with the Female category for now. Martina being nominated is outrageous. And I'm a Martina fan! There's just not justifying it. Reba had a much bigger year with an album that went platinum. I don't really understand Alison being nominated but it must have something to do with the success of the 'Raising Sand' album. It's platinum while LeAnn's album isn't even gold yet. It's not all about albums but Martina and Alison's nominations certainly aren't about success on radio or they wouldn't be nominated.
It gives me a headache at how frustrating this is every year.
