I LOVE that performance. The ending is the best! I really think this song is going to do well.

David Cook deserves this way more than Archuleta if you ask me. All of Archie's songs bore me...Cook's have yet to disappoint though!
Great single choice.

^Deserves what? ???
Did I miss something and we've transported back one year and they're both competing on Idol?

I am definitely not going to get drawn into a Cookie/Archie thing. I'll just say that the recent live performances of CBTM increase my hopes that they will kill with this song on Idol and that that will jump start this. CBTM has always struck me as way more pop-friendly than DC's previous two singles, so I'd love to see it starting to get some good spins.

I am definitely not going to get drawn into a Cookie/Archie thing. Well, I will. So the Light On thread was nothing but fighting and drama until the Cook fans learned to just ignore people who said something they didn't like, or who were clearly baiting. We had to learn to suck it up. Every time we didn't and a fight broke out, we were blamed for being "oversensitive". So my advice to Archies? Suck it up. Move on. Especially when its not even your own thread where the offending statement appears. You love your favorite and all. I like him too. But seriously? I don't want that crap in here. So before this starts becoming a big old scene, can we just let it go now? LOL. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. I'm curious what you meant by them figuring out how to present it live? Have they had trouble with it? It doesn't seem particularly complicated, so I am just trying to figure out what you meant.

Also, folkfan or tinawina or anyone else on here, have you been to any of his tour stops? I am curious what the reaction to CBTM has been on the road before it was known that this was the next single.

I wasn't even here during most of LO's run, but rumors of how bad it was traveled far and wide. While I'm a Cook fan, I like Archie a lot and wish him the best, and there's nothing I hate more than fanwars. The chart watch invites comparisons from those who are prone to make them, and honestly I feel like a lot of the harsh criticism towards LO came because it closely followed the very successful Crush. I somehow doubt some of the people who came to gloat about it's supposed "floppiness" would have done so otherwise. Actually, I think a lot of the gloating and taunting stopped when David's album came out, because it reversed the situation so it wasn't quite as easy anymore to compare and conclude failure vs. success. I hope this thread remains about this song, and not about silly comparisons that should have ended when the show did, 10 months ago.

Have you read Cook's MySpace. He seems to be having enough problems with some of his crazy fans. Forget about Archie's. :o

I never post here, just mostly come here and read. What I find strange is that most of you posting dont know wtf your talking about. Yeah sure, everyone can guess..hell I can guess. I thought Light On would be a pretty nice hit. I think it was for cook. Not a smash, but a nice moderate hit. I actually thought ALTNOY would be a pretty big hit as did most of the archuleta fans did, but sadly it doesnt look like its gonna be (i still could be pleasantly surprised by it though) Bottom line is this. All of you , and I , can guess and speculate what come back to me is gonna do..but we really dont know to that little song is released and gets airplay do we?

Why should we care what Archies or Cookies fans post or not post in other threads we may not even know of. I particularly barely have time to read Pulse. Truth is tinawina speaks out for the very bad experience on the LO thread. However, this thread has started nicely with civilized discussion on the song and the artist. Hope it can continue like this, with respect and tolerance. I like this song and hope it continues improving Cook's performance on CHR. He already got a Top30 and a Top20... now it's time for a Top10 ;)

I am curious what the reaction to CBTM has been on the road before it was known that this was the next single. I've never been to any shows. :'( From what I know he didn't really play this song at shows until it was announced as the next single. Probably had something to do with the fact it had strings. Maybe Folkfan knows if it got played before very recently. Thanks for the link. I'm curious what you meant by them figuring out how to present it live? Have they had trouble with it? It doesn't seem particularly complicated, so I am just trying to figure out what you meant. Yeah, I think she's talking about the whole strings thing. There really isn't a lot of guitar in it. Which is a total waste of Neal (his guitar player), if you ask me. LOL. Each idol has their crazies. I think the people who are stalking Cook are middle-aged women too This particular group of crazies are in their 20s mostly. Not that he doesn't have middle aged stalkers. I'm sure he gets those too. That's idol for you. This is turning into the longest build up to a release date in history. Well, my personal history anyway. Heh.

The setlists on the tour so far have been changed-up nightly, but for the most part have leaned much more to the heavier, up-tempo side of the spectrum. In the first 2-3 weeks on the road they were pretty much rotating-out Lie, Avalanche, CBTM, IDIFY, My Last Request, etc. They would play one, maybe two per night at most, and so none of those songs were played all that often compared to something like Bar-ba-sol or Kiss on the Neck or even some of the unreleased or Analog Heart-era songs like 'We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping' or 'Straight Ahead'.
The more delicate songs in the catalog just don't fit into the flow of the live show as easily, and too many of them per night would change the vibe of the show that David and the band have been aiming for, I think. Even Permanent has been changed-up to include a really heavy band interlude that gives the song a totally different (but no less devastating in my opinion) feel to fit the live show.
So I would say up until about a week or so before the Idol taping, CBTM had been played maybe 3-4 times on this tour? But once they announced the singles, they gradually started working it in more often, tweaking the arrangement, and essentially just road-readying the song. I think some of the more layered production elements and pop flourishes that exist on the studio version are a challenge to interpret on stage with a 5-piece guitar/keys/bass/drums rock band set-up. But as the link FolkFan posted shows, I really do think they've stripped it back and polished it up nicely. I think the Idol "debut" for the single is going to be pretty amazing actually, and this is far from my favorite song on the album. But I do like its chances as a single, so we'll see.

Sorry for the post-ho, but for anyone who's interested, here's a current run-down of the number of times each song has been included in the set since the beginning of the Declaration Tour. CBTM started light but has now been played at every show for the past 2 weeks or so I would say:
25 Bar-ba-sol 25 Heroes 25 Light On 24 Kiss on the Neck 23 Declaration 23 Mr. Sensitive 21 Life on the Moon 18 A Daily AntheM 17 Hot for Teacher (Van Halen cover) 17 We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping (2007, unreleased) 15 Come Back to Me 15 Permanent 13 Breathe Tonight 08 Little Lies (Fleetwood Mac cover) 07 Lie 07 Make Me (Midwest Kings) 07 Straight Ahead (Analog Heart) 06 I Did It For You 06 My Last Request 05 Man in the Box (Alice in Chains cover) 05 The World I Know (Collective Soul cover) 04 Anodyne (Midwest Kings) 04 Avalanche 04 Hunger Strike (Temple of the Dog cover) 04 Souvenir (2008, unreleased) ... 03 Billie Jean (Jackson/Cornell cover) (impromptu; partial) 01 The Truth (Analog Heart) (impromptu; partial)
25 Shows to date 25 Total unique songs played to date* 25 Unique set lists to date 13 Avg # songs at college venue 15 Avg # songs at casino venue
*does not include impromptu, partial Billie Jean *does not include impromptu, partial The Truth

Once a new Idol season starts, I say Idol fan wars are officially over.
When is the official adds date for this again? I'm looking forward to seeing how this does. I don't see a monster Top 40 hit but excellent potential for HAC and AC.

I don't think that CBTM was played more than twice live prior to it being announced as the single. In fact, it still wasn't being played live after the fact that it was a single had shown up on allaccess, until DC announced that it was the single. After the video was taped, they started playing it at every concert. [This prompted some thought that the fact that DC had to learn to sing at least part of it backwards for the video may have been why they weren't playing it live before that.)
When they did start playing it live, it sounded fine, but unlike most of their songs live, it wasn't an improvement on the studio. In addition to adding in the string instrumentation, they also had to figure out how exactly to do the background vocals. In particular, there is one glory note that is a harmony vocal---because DC did all of the vocals on the album, he still did that glory note. Live, they had to figure out how to have the backup singers replicate that glory note, freeing up DC to handle the lead vocals at that part of the song. I think that they've gotten that figured out. I also think that having him now play guitar on it has also added some new energy to the song.
Oh, and I agree with tinawina and jennaj, as I often do.

^^Thanks for answering my questions, tinawina and folkfan.
I thought the live arrangement sounded really good. They definitely made it work.

Well, they seem to change the add dates every 2-3 days, so no guarantees that this is still current, but last we'd seen was 4/7 for CHR/Pop and 4/13 for HAC.

Cook singing a cover of Little Lies?! That would be interesting to hear!!! Fleetwood Mac is one of my all-time favorite artists, and LL is one of the 80s highlights for me, but very Pop. Hopefully he does something good/interesting with that :)

Thanks jennaj! Mmmmm No Cook, you don't kill my Fleetwood Mac classic like that! >:( It's not an awful version, but it took out the tenderness of the song, threw out on the floor, stepped on it and turned it def with his screams Poor Christine McVie! :'(

I love it since I never liked the original, but I think if Cook re-did a song I already loved as is, I'd probably not aprove of the changes. You can't win 'em all.

Well... it depends... I mean, he did great jobs with Hello and Always Be My Baby, Pop ballads that were turned into Rock Ballads, but kept the emotion, the melancholy. This time he turned a Pop song into a Rock song and it didn't work that well IMO, turned upside down the mood of the song from tenderness to anger. Although I still like him for doing covers that are actually reworks of the originals and not mere copies.

R&R (source for Billboard) just issued its radio charts for the week, and Light On made it to 20 weeks on CHR, so it is recurrent-eligible in this format. I think that if he managed to push Light On to top 20 and to 20 charting weeks on CHR, he can do at least as well with CBTM.

LOL. I cant believe it eaked out recurrency. Yay for LO. I do agree that CBTM should do better. It just seems more like a pop song.

I think CBTM is a much better song than LO, but I'm afraid it might not be as successful on the radio. RCA did a lot of promo for LO. If they don't give CBTM some promo, it could get lost in the shuffle. I hope not though because I think it's an awesome song!
