Yeah, that's where I think a lot of people stand. If you don't like her voice in general you're not going to like her live vocals regardless of how well she does. Doesn't necessarily make her a bad singer, just not everyone's cup of tea. I think so too. People don't understand that just because you don't like the sound of a persons voice doesn't mean they are a bad singer. theres a difference between not being able to sing and not liking someones tone. The attitude on this board seems to be that if you don't bring the roof down with your belting, you aren't a good singer.

There are plenty of singers who are not belters that are respected here: Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Sade, Tori Amos, etc. I think Katy is a decent singer not necessarily a good one. She's obviously a person who has probably been singing her entire life and knows how use her voice well but she isn't a naturally-gifted singer. Her best vocals are a product of hard work like Madonna, Taylor, Britney or Miley.

I do agree that Katy does the best with what she has but if by hard work you mean studio editting then I disagree with some of what you said. some of those people you listed particularly Miley and Taylor are much better in acoustic settings, then they've ever been on their CD's.

From my experiences on this board, the artists who are championed as good singers are those who belt 90% of the time. If you can't blow the roof off, you're automatically disregarded as a poor vocalist. There are plenty of talented artists that are ignored on this board just because they don't scream through the majority of their songs.

People must just hate Miley in general because her performance on Idol tonight was good. I'm not proclaiming she's the greatest singer but the girl doesn't sound much different from how she does on her recordings. Definitely not as bad as people are making her out to be. Really? 'Cause I thought her singing was unlistenable. It's like the return of Carmen Rasmussen.

That is so not true I dont know where you're getting that from. Britney is the #1 most idolized singer here by a country mile. Then Rihanna not too far behind.

Katy can't sing. It's a fact, while she can sing but not very good. But I like her voice and at least she tries.
This songs good though, and catchy...

And it's annoying how one-dimensional so many of the posters on this board are because that's ALL they consider when they think of a good vocalist. I find the belters freaking annoying and people that think that's the only way to having a "good voice" are even more annoying.

Katy can't sing. It's a fact How odd. I seriously doubt someone that can't sing can make a career out of it. Maybe you should redefine what "singing" is to you. She might not sing as WELL as other people but she is, in FACT, singing, even with computerized help. Singing is singing, no matter how bad it is.

Why has this turned into a debate on whether Katy Perry can sing or not? Even if she was the worst singer in the world, it's not as if it would matter. Two massive singles and another single that clearly warrants a thread here... so back on topic?

Oh jeez, give it a rest. That is so not true I dont know where you're getting that from. LOL, you obviously don't spend much time here at Pulse. I do, and you're blatantly wrong. Only over the top belters are appreciated here? Who the queen of Pulse? Britney Spears.

I cant wait to hear this on radio all the time!!! :) Anyway, as for Katys voice, no she isnt Celine or Whitney but her acoustic performances are superb imo!
