Perry sure has racked up the No. 1 hits. Since the thread started, RiRi's "only" scored a pair of No. 1 hits.

So a three-way tie between Janet, Rihanna, and Katy. :o
P!nk is right behind them, and should have 8 in a few weeks.

I'm starting to compile a males list. Tricky, though, and may take some time, because the R&R charts site doesn't necessarily have "feature" info all there- i.e. it doesn't list Akon on "The Sweet Escape" (though it does list a number of his other "featurings").
Looking at the info, I expected Usher to have more No. 1s at pop, but he had a whopping six that got stuck at No. 2.
Unsurprisingly, Elton John and Michael Jackson ruled the pop charts from 1973-present.
As an aside: Michael Jackson had four top 40 hits leading up to the start of R&R (three top 10; one which hit No. 1 on the Hot 100), while Elton John had eight (one just missed, at No. 41)- of those eight, five made the Hot 100 top 10. Also- the R&R chart became a top 40 chart in late 1974 (the size of the chart fluctuated between 20-30 for R&R's first year and change).

Katy only needs 6 more #1's to tie Madonna in first place. That's only 1 more album.

I've added Ms. Kelly Clarkson to the list of Most Top 40 Hits; "Dark Side" is her 17th.
I again stress that this is from 1973-present. Acts like Aretha Franklin, Cher, etc. would have more entries in an "all-time" list.

"Blow Me (One Last Kiss") climbed to No. 5 on the 9/15 pop chart, so it is Ms. Moore-Hart's 14th top five at the format.

Christina Aguilera's latest probably will debut on Billboard's Pop Songs chart this week, giving her a 21st top 40 entry at the format. Will update the list above when Billboard posts the info.
EDIT: Updated the list, as "Aguilera's Your Body" debuts at No. 33 on the Pop Songs chart.

A couple of interesting points: - Alanis is the most striking case of a successful artist that disappeared too soon from the pop charts. Even Paula Abdul managed to have more Top 5/10s after almost as many #1s as Alanis :'( - Among the female artists that appeared in the late 1990s/early 00s, Pink has become the most successful artist in the Pop charts. Who would've thought?!
Hopefully Xtina will soon pass Linda Ronstandt among artists with most Top 20s!

HolidayGuy! I found a piece of information that I'm EXCITED about, but would require some correction of stats. I'm a HUGE Olivia Newton-John fan, so I was a bit sad that she was just passed by Pink in the ranking of most Top 20s and about to be passed by Pink in the ranking of most Top 40s, so I double-checked the info. at wweb.uta... to see whether there was something missing. It struck me to see that her last Top 40 entrance was "Soul Kiss" in 1985. I thought The Rumour had done something in Pop, but it looks like it flopped in Pop and Hot 100 (as per Wiki). However, then I wondered about the Grease Megamix and BOOM! I saw this info. in the John Travolta page: Grease megamix 12 12/20/96 1 10/25/96 15
Now, this info. is interesting to me, because this Megamix was a huge hit in Australia, UK and LatinAmerica back in 1991 (in Peru another megamix, Grease Dream Mix, with the romantic songs of Grease also was charted that year, but it was not as popular as TGM). In any case, this would mean that the tally for Olivia should be increased in both Top 40s and Top 20s. Although I'm sure Pink will still pass her in the next few months, at least it would make it a tiny bit harder for others to pass her :)

Paula Abdul OWNED IT for about 5 years.
I am of the group who thinks that Miss Newton-John does not get her credit as a pop diva. She was such a force in pop music

Olivia ruled the pop charts from 1978 - 1984. She really doesn't get the respect. This was also at a time when albums released 2 maybe 3 singles not like the 7-8 that happens now.

Thank you, Oopa- I overlooked "Grease Megamix," as the R&R archive site did not have a link for the track. She certainly was credited on it; I will advise the sitemaster. So, that takes Olivia's top 40 count to 23 and her top 20 count to 19. :)
I also updated the list post with the history of the chart (in terms of how many positions it had in what years, etc.)

Updated the top 20 counts, as the latest singles from Rihanna (shocking) and Christina Aguilera have reached that region.

The reason why Paula's string of hits at top 40 radio came & went in 2 1/2 years is because the format was bleeding listeners by the millions during the early nineties, as 100+ top 40 stations bailed out of the format between the early nineties and the middle of the following decade.
Hot AC, AC, Smooth Jazz, & Country all enjoyed stellar ratings and success during the 1990s, and all at the expense of top 40 radio.
Sheryl Crow & Alanis helped propel the Hot AC format to tons of ratings successes in many markets of all sizes starting in the early nineties.
Many of the very biggest CDs of the 1980s had anywhere from 4-7 top 40 hits on them, including MJ, Janet, Springsteen, Lionel Ritchie, Genesis, Duran Duran, Prince, Huey Lewis & The News and others.
Country became the most-listened to format in 1992, and it's still there today; top 40 ranks 4th.

^But, the number of stations that comprised Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart was in the range of 69-80 or so, and it grew steadily from the mid-90s on (today, it's around 130 or more?). Plus, for the Hot 100, from late 1991 to the later part of the 90s, a good number of stations contributed to the Hot 100 via small-market-airplay points (as BDS added stations, they obviously were removed from this equation). Plus, why would that only affect Paula Abdul? Anyhow, another shocking addition: Rihanna scores another top 5 this week

Britney Spears lands a 30th top 40 entry this week. With that, I'll repost the females info on this new page. Kelly Clarkson's latest release was moving toward the top 20- if it made the cut, I'll update her count.
