s**t, Textures just announced that they're releasing their new album in September. Arrows & Anchors may not be a shoe-in for my album of the year just yet. I don't see anything else competing with it though. It should be an awesome showdown between the two.

Who the hell are Textures? So many unknown apparently awesome bands for me to discover...

My guess is that you won't love Textures as much as Fair To Midland. They're a Dutch Prog-metal band. But here are their two mellowest songs as an introduction to them (and two of my favorites). It's not to say that you won't like the heavier stuff, but if the more beautiful songs don't get you into them, my guess is that the heavier ones won't be your style. - This is one of my top 2 favorite songs of all time. - This will probably remind you of a slightly proggier Killswitch Engage radio single.

I finally checked out the iTunes bonus track "Pour The Coal To 'Er". It's better than more than half the album I'd say. It easily should have made it in my opinion. Grr. I buy not 1 but 2 copies of the album and I still have to pirate a bonus track ... messed up folks, messed up.

No you don't. It's not album only or anything. You can just buy the individual song on the iTunes music store.

Excellent, thanks for the info -- I'm more than happy to pay $1.29 for it. I remember them doing the album only thing with An Honest Con Man. Sigh. Only song of theirs I have that I didn't purchase ... wasn't going to buy the whole album again just to get it (though it is an amazing song.)

I'm not really digging that Textures track. But you also opened me up to Dead Letters, which I find an intereting and enjoyable band.

Yeah Textures is not anywhere near as catchy as Fair To Midland or Dead Letter Circus. It's more about the epic wall-of-sound aesthetic which is why I dig it. I also think the singer has a very rich, full timbre to his voice with great depth, versatility, and emotion. The production is awesome too.
But as far as memorable catchy choruses go and more accessible songs in the prog idiom, definitely Fair To Midland and Dead Letter Circus take the cake.

That Textures track is pretty good. Very beautiful sounding. I might end up checking them out.

Album debuted at #65, with about 6700 sold.
Made it into the Top 100 at least.

Any idea where their last one opened? I'm sure this one is down from that one, but on the other hand, how much does Eone need to sell to break even? They haven't exactly spent a bankload trying to promote the album.

Their last album opened at #137, so I think this one did a bit better.

It certainly did better relative to the times. And even still, I think it sold more overall for the first week. There's no way that an album that sold nearly 7,000 copies would have been that far down the chart, even in '07.

Sweet. Any guesses on whether this sold enough to A) get us a second single (which ought to be Uh-Oh) and B) guarantee FTM the ability to make another album?

46 44 FAIR TO MIDLAND Musical Chairs 159 137 22 0.219
Good rebound for them. I still think it probably won't hit top 40, but with another couple updates like today's, it'd have a shot. 159 is the most plays it's had in any 7-day period, but the trajectory had been consistently downward for the past couple weeks leading up to this, so I'm remaining very guarded in my hopes here.

As I said before, I hope this outpeaks "Tall Tales..." and gets a debut on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.

My guess is that it will hit the top 40 of BDS active rock this week, but I still give it a less than 50-50 chance of ever making the top 40 on Billboard or Mediabase, even beyond this week. It certainly won't debut on Billboard this week, and will need a few adds or major airplay gains to make it.

Yeah, it's okay, but it definitely has nothing on the new Theory Of A Deadman.

Following this songs smashing success, the band should release The Greener Grass as the second single. ;)

I finally ordered this and Fables on Amazon (along with the $45 Special Edition Mumford & Sons Sigh No More ). I CANNOT WAIT for this to get to me! It should come in a couple of days. :)

If anything I would say "Amarillo Sleeps Under My Pillow" or "Uh Oh" or "Coppertank Island" would be great single options. "Bright Bulbs And Sharp Tools" or "Short-Haired Tornado" are also worthy contenders.

"Bright Bulbs And Sharp Tools" or "Short-Haired Tornado" are also worthy contenders. A recent poll showed "Bright Bulbs And Sharp Tools" having the fewest votes for favorite song. I think "Loophole" is a better choice than either "Bright Bulbs" and "Short-Haired Tornado". I also think "Golden Parachutes" sounds like a hit, even if it's not one of my favorite songs on the album. And I wouldn't rule out "Rikki Tikki Tavi", just because it's such an attention-grabber. I think "Uh-Oh" is the route to go. If not, I think "A Loophole In Limbo", "Coppertank Island", "Golden Parachutes" and "Amarillo Sleeps On My Pillow" would be the next best choices.

Well they just don't know what they're talking about.
I was going to say Rikki Tikki Tavi, but I wonder if it might be too heavy and/or weird. I would rather something a strong chorus be a single. A lot of people do seem to like Loophole, but for some reason that's one of my least favorite songs on the album. I don't know why (when you always take your time lol) but I suspect it has to do with it just not being as interesting as the other songs.

While Greener Grass has the albums best chorus, it is obviously much too long and unusual for radio. Whisky and Ritalin or Uh Oh are the best single choices here. No need to overthink it.
