It’s for sure more rock sounding than anything she’s released, but I’m unsure if it’s radio friendly, chorus wise.

Is there even a chance Bruno loses AOTY now? When is the last time someone won ROTY and SOTY and lost AOTY? Sam Smith swept record, song, and BNA and lost album to Beck.

When I search an artist and Spotify shows me their 5 most popular songs, anyone know what the time frame being reflected is? Is there a way to view totals for more than those 5 songs? In the desktop version if you hover the mouse arrow over the popularity bar, I believe you can view the total all time streams of any song.

I’m guessing “The Champion” is going to chart on Hot Country Songs? Right now Bebe Rexha feat. FGL is no. 1 on that chart so the standard for “country” is not exactly set very high. Although for Grammy submission it would probably be in the pop collaboration category.

#2 on iTunes... She’s never hit #1 before. She’s selling almost 90% of the current #1. It just might happen. IYH was her only #1 on iTunes I think? Carrie’s biggest digital sellers do seem to always get blocked at #2 or #3 though. The song is super catchy for sure, but her voice is definitely processed a bit strangely, more nasally than her typical timbre.

I actually really like this. It sounds a bit like a cross between the material on Love on the Inside and Incredible Machine. The first few verses will take some time to grow, I think. But, the chorus is killer. Yeah the verses don’t stick that well at first listen, but the chorus is definitely classic anthemic Sugarland.

Deluxe version now $7.99 on iTunes (same as regular). I’ve been holding out for a sale and now Ed has my money.

Seeing these two back together at the CMAS was the best surprise. Hopefully they’ll have good material. Love their first two albums and the Christmas one, and the other two had some good cuts, some not so great ones. Wonder if radio will play them again, given their decidedly lukewarm reception to Jennifer’s solo work. Guessing “Still the Same” would be a song title, probably about a longstanding relationship (romantic or otherwise) that has evolved over time but still has that special something that has been there since the beginning. Did Scott Borchetta buy out their contract with UMG? Kristian had indicated that they still had to fufill their contract to Mercury Nashville earlier this year.

#1 on iTunes, nice. That’s at least his fourth single in a row that’s hit top ten on there. I’m not fond of list songs but Keith sings this appealingly.

I want a first person song that punches you in the gut, if she’s bidding for international success that’s really the way to go, IMO. She hasn’t really released anything like that since Carnival Ride era with JAD And ITYS (grumbles some more about WCIS, SWISLY, WAW, and Relapse never seeing the light of day).

I wanted to love the album and I really feel for her but it seems she took a bit of a stubborn approach to it. I listened to her Facebook Live interview and she was adamant about having a producer that would not interfere with her writing. I think had she collaborated with producers and done some co-writing, she could have had a good project. There are a few decent songs - for some reason Let's Kiss and Make Up keeps sticking in my mind. A friend of mine was spot on when he said everything is sung like a sad song - even the songs that should be upbeat. More Fun is an awful song in my opinion - the music and the vocals are downers! This. I couldn't understand why a song about fun could sound like such a dirge. The old Shania had such a joie de vivre in her vocal performances and these new songs are just flat in comparison. Obviously she's been through a lot and the weariness shows. I liked "Swinging" and "Poor Me" of the pre-release tracks so I had some hopes but the rest of the album doesn't appeal to me much. Maybe "Soldier" could be released to country radio, it seems to have a relatively higher amount of streams and downloads compared to the other tracks that weren't previously released.

I have a feeling that Sugarland broke up to try and save face after the Indiana State Fair incident. That pretty much killed their momentum, along with their last album being mostly WTF. Agree that the Indiana state fair tragedy probably destroyed their partnership, although the quality of their music was going downhill. Their first two albums still hold up well, and I wish there was more music like that these days. Jennifer is so unquestionably talented it's a shame her solo work gets little acknowledgement.

Macy's: Renegade Runaway--Carrie Underwood Stuck Like Glue--Sugarland
I was so surprised to hear RR since it wasn't a single and they were mostly old pop singles playing in the store. And dang it I miss Sugarland even though SLG wasn't one of my favorites from them.

This isn't all that revealing or anything, but it's a look into what's being asked of songwriters and song-pluggers for the upcoming album. Seeking RANGY MID/UPTEMPOS with depth lyrics. No references to cheating or divorces in the lyrics. Inspirational themes probably a plus. Story songs fine. Do not imitate the same topics of previous Carrie no. 1 hits. Lmao Carrie is so done with always having to release singles about cheating and bad boys. Sony has had her in that box forever.

I will never not be convinced that "Relapse" would have gotten Storyteller a Billboard 200 #1 album and a platinum single (at least) if it had been lead single instead of "Smoke Break." It's just so in that passionate/angsty "Adele" lane that people connect to so much emotionally. Would have been a tough song to sing night after night for sure though, Carrie really pours everything into it live.

I feel like Carrie's mention of her new label's "innovative spirit" is telling. She always put on a good face for the public, but privately I suspect she might have been feeling somewhat artistically boxed in to be always radio-friendly and frequently following the pattern of her own previous hits either sonically or thematically. She seemed to be surprised at the label's single selection on a number of occasions in the past, it will be curious to see how much say and what kind of stylistic choices she makes in the future on that front.

What?! I'm so shocked that her record deal is over already, I thought she would have owed Sony another album or two since Kelly Clarkson's just ended and she did more albums than Carrie. Not that shocked that she would leave though. Maybe she won't be boxed in as tightly with all those songs patterned after BHC . Capitol seems more aggressive about pushing for a more diverse audience, so hopefully Carrie will start doing more soundtracks and collaborations and have a proper European tour.

LOL @ Heartbeat and Church Bells being submitted for best music video. I guess team CU just submits anything that is eligible rather than curating for best odds. Would be nice to see Carrie get an album nom, though, since that's never happened. Still crazy to me that Some Hearts spawned five Grammy wins and yet was never nominated for album itself, especially considering some of the other albums that have won in that category (I love Lady A but Own the Night as best country album really?). On the topic of Carrie co-writes, "What Can I Say" and "Good in Goodbye" are possibly my favorite songs in her catalog. I like that they show nuance in the portrayal of relationships, that it's complicated and NOT totally the other person's fault that the relationship ended, and that regret, forgiveness, nostalgia, moving on, can all be tied together without everything being so black and white. I just find these type of songs more interesting to think about and relate to rather than the typical boy bashing kiss off anthems (which many female artists are known for, not just Carrie, and I feel the same way about their catalogs). Now if Team Carrie would just release these songs to radio instead of having them sit on the album underappreciated that would be great.

Glad to see Carrie looked like princess and won an award. I'm not terribly surprised that she didn't win EOTY without a stadium tour, which seems to be what it takes to win this award, especially for the women. I just wish she'd release/perform more songs that sell well with live tv performances (acoustic angsty ballads) instead of so frequently going with high production songs; I'd like less production on the albums too but that's been an issue forever. What I wouldn't give for a song as stripped back like "Burning House" on her albums. And I still want a full recorded acoustic version of her haunting Grammy version of "Blown Away" dang it. Maybe she should do some ghost story songs instead of murder ones because that performance was downright chilling, and I'd love to hear her explore that facet of her voice more.

Omg LINLYA live! I thought she'd never sing that one live since she expressed reservations about a potential "Heartbeat" video being too sexy and LINLYA is far more explicit lyrically. Excited now.

:o Number 4 at iTunes, wow. I don't think Brad has had a download hit in ages. Even his songs with decent airplay have mostly flatlined digitally the last few eras. He's come across as trying way too hard since the This is Country Music era and just not connecting ("Without a Fight" being just the latest example), so it's good to see people are still interested in his music. I haven't actually heard this one yet, but fingers crossed (I personally loved "Then").

Tears in my eyes this morning. I always suspected Windmills and Dudley were one and the same, but this time I was hoping to be wrong since once many years ago I asked Dudley in a PM if she was Windmills on TWoP, way back before either of us were posting here and long before there was a windmills blog/twitter, and she denied it. I've Internet known her since 2004 and we've been on five of the same message boards--we were in the Clay Aiken fandom together way back then, and I felt a little less strange being an Asian twentysomething in that fandom knowing Dudley was one too. I met her in person at a concert in 2005, and she was warm and lovely as well as one of the smartest, most articulate people I've ever met. She went to college at the place I went to grad school and we had talked about that in addition to fandom stuff. Then we both joined Carrie's fandom and it was a comfort to know there was someone I knew who was such a voice of reason as well, and she was kind enough to be on the phone with me during the first Love, pain and the whole crazy carnival ride show to share in my excitement in those pre smartphone and social media days and write about it back to Pulse. I've drifted away from fandom the last couple of years so we hadn't spoken recently, but I always still lurked to read her thoughts here and on twitter and MJs blog. She was a remarkably patient moderator, and I always admired her articulate dissembly of hater nonsense with a slew of hard facts. Definitely far too young to leave us.

I've always had the same suspicion. It's especially freaking me out because Dudley hasn't posted since late August. Yeah I just did a search on her posts and she posted about not being able to moderate as much because she wasn't feeling well. I've talked to her on the phone way back when she transcribed my description of Carrie's first show with Keith Urban (those were the pre twitter days) to this board so I know the name she goes by and seeing the name above is not reassuring.

Um I always thought windmills and 43dudleyvillas were the same person, right now I really hope I'm wrong. Either way this is awful, hugs to all. Tremendous loss to our community.

They can always release a country radio mix of "The Fighter" with some random fiddle or something. I think "Beautiful Drug" had one just recently.

All the credit to Keith and Nicole for being so goofy and adorable that people are paying attention to the song, but I definitely think there's still such a longing from the public for "pop diva" Carrie that Storyteller hasn't been able to reach. "Smoke Break" and "Heartbeat" may fit better with what other country artists are doing, but they don't strike me as songs that appeal to people who like Carrie for her distinctive style. "Church Bells" hasn't been a huge single seller or anything, but it's recognizably Carrie's type of song such that the album seems to be holding better ITunes rankings than during the run of HB (not accounting for big promo and discount weeks). I think if the album hadn't been marketed as "more country/twangy," which it isn't even really as a whole, it would be doing better commercially. Still Team Relapse for any shot at a platinum single this era.

I think #9 out peaks "Wasted Time" when it was performed on Idol. Send to dance/pop/hot ac plz. Capitol promoted Lady Antebellum on those formats with their single off the Audien album to reasonable success.

At first listen I like this more than any of Keith's material since LP&tWCT, it just feels more emotionally honest than his past few albums that featured over sentimentalized, schmaltzy takes on being a teenager (which drives me nuts about Lady A's recent works too). Is it country, not really, but I'm a core adult pop listener anyway. "Habit of You" is probably my favorite after a first pass through the album.

Well that wasn't what I expected at all, a straight up dance track, weird. Capitol had success with Lady A's "Something Better" on the dance charts, wonder if they will try pushing "The Fighter" on those formats as well.

^^ Looking at those streams I say free "Relapse" . I think she needs to make a bid for teens and twenty somethings to get some buzz for the album and afaik that was the favorite ST track on tumblr by far when it came out. Thematically I don't think she's released anything suited for that demo probably since "Good Girl." Carrie always tends to avoid releasing these types of post breakup angst fests though (except ITYS, which was a cover) even though she's had some great gems on her albums in that vein. But those are typically the types of songs people connect to the most--Adele being the foremost example. Carrie has done remarkably well for herself but in my mind I always think she would be so much bigger worldwide if tracks like SWG, YWFT, WCIS, WAW, and now "Relapse" ever saw the light of day on the radio, but obviously that's never been a priority for her.
