GUNFIGHT AT CHART CORRAL Debuting Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney Duel for #1
October 6, 2010
A pair of cowboys will go head-to-head for chart supremacy next week.
BNA’s Kenny Chesney album, Hemingway’s Whiskey, has a good chance to repeat at #1 if his drop off is the accustomed 60% or less, with debuting Show Dog artist Toby Keith his biggest challenge at the 65-70k mark.
That’s based on one-day sales reports from those retailer praying to the Grilled Cheesus that business will pick up as Q4 gets underway.
Multi-talented performer/producer/writer Bruno Mars’ Atlantic debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, looks set for a debut between 45-50k. Among the smashes he’s either written or produced are Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You,” Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” and Cee Lo Green’s red-hot “f**k You.”
Asylum/WB Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame’s Flockaveli will debut with a total around 35-40k.
E1 Music’s Faith Evans, widow of the late Notorious B.I.G., returns with her sixth album, Something About Faith, her first since 2005’s A Faithful Christmas, looking at a probable 23-27k first week.
19/Jive/JLG former American Idol runner-up David Archuleta’s The Other Side of Down, the follow-up to his ’08 self-titled debut, should do between 22-25k, the same as Universal Republic indie-rock faves Guster’s Easy Wonderful.
Pimp C, the late member of rap duo UGK with partner Bun B, is represented by the posthumous Rap-a-Lot release, The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones, with sales estimates of 18-20k
The market was up 6% vs. last week, down 23% vs. same week last year and still down 13% year to date.
No, go out and try to invent the next Facebook, OK?

people should know that a big hit single doesnt get you much anymore. Mike Posner only did 40-50K opening week. So i'm not surprised at all Bruno is debuting at that number.

Disappointment all-around. #1 possibly under 75K, Bruno only 45K, Archuleta 25K... :(

Looks like Bruno Mars is a singles artist after all.

You can't always judge a debut artist based on their debut week, regardless of how well their singles have been performing. Did everyone say Lady Gaga's album was a flop after her debut week? She debuted at #17 with only 24,000 sold and didn't even reach top 10 for another 4 months. Granted "Just Dance" hadn't quite blown up at that point like Bruno's single has, but still, give him some time. He seems to have some real songwriting, producing, and singing talent, unlike the many carbon-copy autotune rhythmic males we've been seeing come out over the past year or so.
But yeah, a sad sales week indeed.

Lol, the only acts that are selling now are either established Country, Rock or Rap (Eminem, J-Z); or Pop Divas that have fanboys.
And I'm only half joking here

Omg @ the #1 album only selling 65,000 I really thought Bruno would be able to do 100k+. What does it take for a new artist to sell these days? Expected numbers for David since he didn't have promo. Lol, the only acts that are selling now are either established Country, Rock or Rap (Eminem, J-Z); or Pop Divas that have fanboys. And I'm only half joking here You're pretty much right. When was the last time a new artist had a sales week over 100k...Ke$ha in January? Even Selena, the new Disney it girl, didn't even come close to scrapping 100k.

Yeah, basically in order to sell now you have seem to have to be either established (Eminem, etc) or Hyped (Drake). It's tough to break through sales wise now otherwise.

I can't believe the #1 album will only do 60-65k. Is that the lowest ever?

Ouch! Thought Bruno might have better sales, but nope he's with DeRulo, B.O.B, Flo, Jay Sean, ect.
Thought Toby would have done better too. And Archie has become the new Kat McPhee :( I guess we should all except the worse.

Ouch for David Archuleta. He had promise but this era has been a mess.

Surprisingly, the Dreamgirls Soundtrack still retains the "record" for the lowest #1 album at just over 60,000 copies set in early 2007. We may have a new record next year, though, with the way the market is nowadays.

Probably. The music industry needs to start being proactive in their approach to selling music in my opinion and rethink of new ways to get their artists out there. Instead of trying to sue and shut down and retaliate. Plus some better quality music wouldn't be bad either. Ha.

I still say EPs might be the way to go, at least for pop acts. Look at GaGa and Bieber.

unlike the many carbon-copy autotune rhythmic males we've been seeing come out over the past year or so. Bruno Mars, B.O.B, and Travis mccoy are very similar, IMO, but I guess that's because Bruno wrote for the others.

60k was the lowest ever for a #1. I don't think this will be the lowest selling #1 ever but it very well could be yet another 'lowest sales week ever'

PLEASE KENNY GET THE SECOND WEEK AT #1. I can't stand Toby Keith.
Disappointing for Archuleta. The label isn't doing a good job at making music that's actually marketable tho.

Bruno is selling at about the same pace as a lot of new artists with big hits.
B.o.B - 84,000 Jason DeRulo - 40,000 Jay Sean - 32,000 Taio Cruz - 24,000
Bruno is completely in line with that.
Where do people get these unrealistic expectations from??? Just pulling numbers from the sky?

Cooler Than Me was up a ways on the chart and did in the 40K range as well.

I think Bruno Mars will be a consistent seller though. He's got SNL and Ellen coming up that should prevent the album from plummeting and might even keep it steady for the time being at least. Granade should also keep the album selling.
I think he might go Gold if the the album keeps selling steadily.
