16 31 KATY PERRY CAPITOL/EMI 25,514 -10% TEENAGE DREAM
I'll take a -10% drop. Good numbers once again. :) I believe she passes 600k this week.

Actually I think Katy only had Letterman and the Today show during her debut week, unless I missed something. Being that Rihanna released in an obviously higher traffic week during the Holiday season, I'd say they were on a pretty equal playing field. Either way, I think they both did great with their openings. They've both shown in the past that their albums have longevity, so a high debut week isn't quite the end all be all that some are painting it to be. Rihanna did not do any promo until the week the album came out and GMA was the major promo and Letterman. She should have done promo the weeks before the album was released. She had no billboards, no major primetime appearances until the AMAs and it was too late by then the sales week was over. Most of her promo was radio interviews. She should have been on all the major tv shows.

Well, she did better than Katy with equal promo and bigger hits. And, she did better than Xtina with better promo (but no hit) Katy didn't have the benefit of releasing the middle of November at a time where sales are at its best (Q4). Sales to not spike until the week of black Friday so Rihanna did not have an advantage either.

Thank goodness Mariah increased! There was 0 promo last week so I was expecting a fall...
Pretty good numbers for Rihanna, at least she broke the 200K barrier.
Justin B will pass 2,000,000 next week.

Katy actually had more promo than Rihanna did and her hits were bigger (CG - #1 for 7 weeks, more AI). WMN hitting #1 in it's 2nd week isn't equivalent to when CG made it to #1. And I'm not getting why people say Rihanna had a lot of promotion when it was actually quite weak. She's only had about 3 TV appearances for this and it all happened the week of release. The AMA's makes 4 but that was this week. I think some are confusing her internet/blog omnipresence as some type of promotion. 200k is a good number for Rihanna to start with. Definitely not shriekingly amazing but it's a good debut. Rihanna is also supposed to be established and first week sales are largely supported by the hardcore fans who still pick up albums. Which means there's probably no such thing as 'established' for a pop act that started out in the digital era.
