Yeah sounds good. Competition is good. Keeps people innovating.

I've tried finding out more about Spotify, but I can't really tell... what makes it different from Pandora?

I've tried finding out more about Spotify, but I can't really tell... what makes it different from Pandora? I don't use Pandora, but my understanding of it is it is basically an internet radio station that can adapt itself to your tastes. Spotify is basically a free stand-alone music player. You don't get to download and keep any of the songs, but you can play whole albums, create playlists of specific songs, save your "library" of tracks to your account, etc. I think it could be the next Facebook. Or, perhaps a better comparison would be the next iTunes.

Ah, so it's like iTunes, just without the actual ownership of the music? Of course, the tradeoff being that it's a free service, unless you pay the small fee for those premium accounts. Makes more sense now, thanks!

Sounds a lot like Rhapsody, where you can stream full-length songs and albums, create playlists, etc. That hasn't been much competition to iTunes, so we'll see...

It isn't really competition for iTunes because you can only use it when you're on the Internet. Whereas with iTunes, you can purchase the song, have it on your iPod, MP3 player (after converting the file), or download it to a CD and play it whenever you want. Whereas Rhapsody, and apparently Spotify, you can only use on a computer or a phone with Internet access. Not really helpful when I'm driving.

That's a big difference. I honestly think that if a service like Spotify launches in the U.S., it will do to iTunes what iTunes did to music stores.

No. It will do well, but it's not the same as iTunes for the reasons I stated above. It's no different than Grooveshark, really, and Grooveshark isn't threatening iTunes at all.

Grooveshark is not licensed to offer any major label music (except apparently now with EMI after the company dropped its lawsuit). Anyone who uploads any copyright-protected song to Grooveshark could be liable for copyright infringement if the labels ever decide to go after users again. Grooveshark users have been suspended for uploading protected content. UMG currently has a suit against Grooveshark. Pink Floyd also recently won a case against the site. It's not a legal alternative to iTunes. There has not yet been a truly legal, free streaming service to offer competition to iTunes. Spotify would be the first.

It could be an interesting option, but I prefer owning the songs. Spotify sounds good if you're using the internet on a public computer, but when I'm home it's not that helpful.

Exciting! It will be interesting to see what this does to music sales if it blows up. Any idea if it caused any impact on sales in the UK? Obviously it would be hard to prove either way but it's an interesting debate nonetheless

I didn't realize the artists don't get any royalties from this new revenue stream. I hope what I'm hearing is not true.

I snagged an invite from their Facebook page (people commented with a bunch of codes) and am loving the way it looks. Will experiment more with it tomorrow. It will be a great tool for listening to albums (to see if I like) before buying

Didn't realize they had a lot of missing albums, but I just read Adele's 21 isn't on there! I hope that doesn't become an inconvenience.

Not available here to try, but it seems like an interesting service. It could make it big, but I don't think it's going to be a competitor to iTunes if you can't download the songs but always need a working internet connection. Although, since so many people have 3G etc now, it might be fine. It won't kill iTunes though.

With the paid service you can apparently store up to 2000 tracks on your phone so that they are available when you don't have 3G/internet service.

No. People like to always have their music on them. Sure, there can be apps for Spotify for your phone/iPod, but for all the millions of people who don't have smart phones/iPods/iPads, they use iTunes to buy music for their MP3/4 players. Spotify won't be killing anything except maybe Grooveshark.

Iphones and Ipads wont' be using it much unless they are connected via wifi...otherwise the users will get bill shock when they get their $300 phone bill.

Does anyone know what the max amount of streaming time is with a free account? I noted on the website that the paid accounts have unlimited streaming and the free one does not. I assume it's a certain number of hours per month but I can't find anything specific.

I assume it's a certain number of hours per month but I can't find anything specific. I believe that you get 5 plays of a song per month, and only 20 hours of streaming total per month. But if you were invited, as part of the launch, you get unlimited streaming for the first six months. The only downside I've found so far is the annoying ads.
