While others struggle to make it to 500K, I find it funny all the people panicing about Gaga's drop off. The label knows what it is doing and I have no doubt Gaga will easily scan 2 million.

GaGa can easily go 2M but 3M is looking not so good.

Except her OWN record label AND Billboard were both OFFICIALLY predicting 700k for the debut before the Amazon deal was made. As a matter of fact, they were foreseeing only 400k two weeks before the release which in my opinion would have been extremely disappointing considering the buzz. Her label shipped 2.1 million first week. They were not predicting 700k.

Her label shipped 2.1 million first week. They were not predicting 700k. REALLY? From BILLBOARD: "While there wasn't any doubt as to whether Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" album would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 -- that's been an assumption for months -- its first-week number was always in question. A month ago, executives at Gaga's record company, Universal Music Group, were expecting a first week total of around 400,000. That number escalated to 650,000-700,000 by its release on Monday, May 23 -- the same day AmazonMP3 announced its controversial decision to sell the album for 99-cents for one day only." The entire article was the first posting in the Thread: "HITS: 5/31: Lady GaGa #1: 1,110,420".

Why are we still having these Gaga "fights"?
Did she sell over a million first week? Yes. Did she have a huge drop in week 2? Yes. Did a 99 cent sale help her first week sales? Yes. Did she promote herself a lot? Yes.
Does any of the above diminish her success or anyone else's? No!
The numbers are the numbers. Trying to make them prove some legendary status or utter failure is a waste of time and supremely annoying (and no doubt the reason why the Hits thread was locked last week).

^Thank you.
We will have to listen to "GaGa is a flop" each week now until the album falls off the Billboard 200.
People are forgeting about the music. I really like Fashion Of His Love.

Yes. The #'s are a bit askewed. But it is a still a great accomplishment in this day.
This is still Adele's year. Grammys ought to be interesting.

Adele will easily scan close to 4million by the end of the year.
GaGa will do close to 3 million.
I don't think that anybody else will get close to them tho.
Hopefully, Beyonce, Coldplay, Lady A, and all the rest of the high profile artists that will release this year, manage to have decent sales so as to keep the year-to-date in black numbers.
Specially considering that at least two of high profile artists this year are flopping/underperforming... ie Avril and Britney.

They predicted 700k first week but wasn't Taylor's initial projection like 650-700k? I think million sellers are tougher to gage (sp?) in general.

Just to throw it out there, Taylor's album was released in the Holiday season. GaGa's in the May.

Just because the label predicted 700k doesn't mean that's what it would have sold without the Amazon deal. I find it very hard to believe that 100% of the people who bought it for 99 cents on Amazon weren't going to buy it anyway.

Teens, adults, and likely an older audience. She has a wide target audience. GaGa's, on the other hand, has a limited audience. Probably moreso than her last record since she's since carved out more of a niche where before she was likely more general.

Well the steep decline the following week kinda points in the direction that they wouldn't have.

Yeah, Swift's album was released way in advance of the holiday shopping season (which does not kick off until Thanksgiving week). In general, though, sales in the fourth quarter are higher than any other time of year. And, indeed, Swift would appeal to a wider demographic, I'd think, than Ms. Germanotta.

Because I'm admitting the arguing is completely stupid and it's annoying that some posters bring it over to any topic that discusses sales. It can go both ways is my point. Plus, despite being an admin, I can still have opinions. I was simply offering up another perspective that is as ridiculous and annoying as the ones that keep getting brought up.

My post was in response to someone who implied that Taylor had some sort of sales advantage due to her release date when there was really nothing special that week that would allow the user to assert such a claim. It wasn't Black Friday, it wasn't holiday shopping season yet, and there wasn't any awards show that week either. There wasn't really anything about the sales climate that week that gave Taylor any sort of large advantage over Gaga. But yes, I agree the audience Taylor attracts give a sales advantage but then again Taylor didn't have nearly as much of the promotion or the hype Gaga had coming into her opening. An advantage Taylor had can be countered by an advantage Gaga had and vice versa. As far as Gaga being a niche artist. I agree that she certainly is more of one than she used to but someone who has managed to break the largest one week opening for a female in 3 days and opened w/ 1 mil+ in albums the opening week can't be that much of a niche artist. Or at the very least, it's not as much of a hindrance to her. And being a niche artist doesn't necessarily mean a worse position. It depends on what demographic the artist is catering to. If an artist caters to an album buying audience or if they have an extremely large and loyal fanbase, they will be fine. There are more general artists who don't have the album sales of some niche artists b/c they appeal to demographics that don't buy albums or are extremely fickle and aren't as loyal.

A friend of mine was planning to buy the album because it was so cheap, but listened to the clips and decided against it. I don't know where people like that fit into the equation, but it made me think of these arguments and smile.

I think it'd be more helpful to imagine what the drop would have been without the Amazon sale. If it had sold 700-750k, a drop to around 200k would be pretty normal for a big release. But since 460k people bought it from Amazon, the second week is going to be even smaller. I predict 175k, 120k for the following week, and then slowly reach 2.5million by the end of 2011.

Fort it to reach 2.5m by the end of the year, that would require an average of around 55K a week through the end of the year. Not impossible, but not a given, either.

Regardless of all the fuss about the Amazon deal, the fact remains that people are not going to spend money on something they simply do not want. It doesn't matter whether it is $0.99 or $9.99. The challenge for Lady Gaga this era will be convincing casual CHR listeners who enjoyed her first two eras to buy into her more daring material. I do not consider Gaga to be a niche artist in the least but her material on Born This Way can seriously challenge and possibly alienate part of her core audience. I believe there are more potential hits on the album than I initially thought now that I've given the album some time to breath. They are just not the instant, CHR-ready tracks that seemingly littered her first two eras. I think it'll be interesting to see how many albums she can sell on the back of TEOG considering that it's arguably her most listener-friendly song to date.

I don't know where people like that fit into the equation, but it made me think of these arguments and smile. Well yes obviously there are many people that didnt buy it because they didnt like a single song, but just one good song would have made it worth it to buy the album.

I didn't mean for my post to be a direct reply to you as it seems like you have a handle on either perspective. It just seems that people are using certain facts from the album's release week against her, such as the 99 cent thing. Ideas that absolutely make sense but when bringing them up to use completely against the achievement of her 1.1 million as if it deserves some sort of an asterisks is just annoying, pointless and petty. Essentially, you can pick out characteristics from probably any major selling album and use them for or against them and find ways to say that so-and-so doesn't deserve full credit. I just fully think it's pointless to turn such facts into debates about whether they mean one thing over another. Mention them, fine. But to debate them as if one perspective or idea is THE right one is utterly pointless and frustrating. Anyway, thanks for your post.
