These are just the nominees? Or are they the ones who made it into the Hall this year?

Perhaps Joan Jett's and Heart's nominations will make the Hall consider Pat Benatar in the future? While never a big critics' favorite (like those two females), her overall body of work is better than Joan Jett's, I'd say.
And, please with Donna Summer already!

Eric B. & Rakim, The Cure, Joan Jett, GNR Nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of FameSeptember 27, 2011By Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - Long ago, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts professed their love for rock 'n' roll. It's time to see if the feeling runs both ways. The iconic rock act is on the list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees for the 2012 class released Tuesday. Women who rock feature prominently among first-time nominees. Joining Jett, whose "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" remains a classic rock standard 30 years after its release, are sister act Heart and Rufus with Chaka Khan. They're joined by Guns 'N Roses, hip-hop pioneers Eric B. & Rakim, glum glam Goths The Cure and The Small Faces/The Faces, which includes Rod Stewart. Bluesman Freddie King and The Spinners are also first-time nominees on the ballot for the hall's 2012 class. Previous nominees up again include The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro, Donovan and War and its an eclectic group, running from lush British folk to classic early beats and bone-crushing power rock. An act must have released its first single or album 25 years ago to qualify for induction. More than 500 voters will determine who makes the hall. New members will be inducted at a ceremony at the hall of fame in Cleveland on April 14. The leather-clad and tough-as-nails Jett was an early icon for women. A founding member of the all-female The Runaways, she went on to become a chart-topping success after forming the Heartbreakers in 1982. Heart similarly made an indelible mark on the rock scene of the 1970s and '80s. Among the first women to front an aggressive rock band, singer Ann Wilson and her sister, guitarist Nancy Wilson, cut some of the era's most memorable songs, from "Barracuda" to "Magic Man," and inspired a generation of women along the way. Then a teen, Khan burst on the seen with the Chicago-based Rufus in the 1970s. She defied easy categorization, moving easily between R&B, rock and disco before going onto an enviable solo career. www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/retail/eric-b-rakim-the-cure-joan-jett-gnr-nominated-1005371752.story

Rufus! I suspect Mary will be on hand to perform "Sweet Thing" at the event and even perhaps induct the group themselves.

Breakdown of number of nominations and when they became eligible. As you can see, some acts wait quite a while, even for a nomination (two have been eligible since the first year of inductions):
Beastie Boys: Third nomination (second consecutive); eligible since 2007 The Cure: First nomination; eligible since 2003 Donovan: Second nomination (second consecutive); eligible since 1990 Eric B. & Rakim: First nomination; FIRST-YEAR ELIGIBILITY Guns 'N Roses: First nomination; FIRST-YEAR ELIGIBILITY Heart: First nomination; eligible since 2001 Joan Jett and the Blackhearts: First nomination; eligible since 2005 Freddie King: First nomination; eligible since 1986 (first year of inductions) Laura Nyro: Third nomination (third consecutive); eligible since 1992 Red Hot Chili Peppers: Second nomination; eligible since 2009 Rufus with Chaka Khan: First nomination; eligible since 1999 The Small Faces/The Faces: First nomination; eligible since 1991 The Spinners: First nomination; eligible since 1986 (first year of inductions) Donna Summer: Fourth nomination (third consecutive); eligible since 1999 War: Second nomination; eligible since 1996

It's been an incredibly long wait for the Cure to get on the ballot - I strongly hope they make it in on the first try.

I've noticed that for some reason Donna Summer keeps getting overshadowed in press releases on the RHOF when the nominees are announced. I hope there is enough push for her to finally get inducted.

Incredibly long wait for The Cure? Neil Diamond was inducted last year, 22 years after first becoming eligible. :) The Cure's only in its ninth year of eligibility.
d.t.m., Donna Summer's been nominated before- could be that first-time nominees get more coverage. Currently, the acts who had the most nominations leading up to its induction is Solomon Burke (10). After that, The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Gene Pitney, Little Willie John, Duane Eddy and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers each had eight nominations before their induction.
(As always, an act's number of nominations differs from the number of years it's been eligible for the HOF.)

Has Nico ever been at least nominated? She would fall into the category of no commercial success, but I dare anyone to tell me her music is not influential enough to warrant nominations. And cool, Donovan was nominated!

Nico- eligible since 1990- has never been nominated. However, she was part of one of the most celebrated albums of all time- The Velvet Underground and Nico- of course, Velvet Underground is in the HOF.

Her work with The Velvet Underground was so not her. I love the way her music took after her debut :) Thanks for the info! And i hope to see Tori Amos be nominated when she reaches the 25 years for her to be eligible <3

It's just as incredibly influential as they are/were, despite their relative lack of popularity, made me think they'd be at least nominated soon after becoming eligible. But this really is just a glorified popularity contest anyway, so I guess I'm really just surprised that they're finally getting a nod at all.

Popularity contest in what way? Inductees don't get in on their level of commercial success.
The Cure is a pretty acclaimed band- so based on that, nine years for its first nomination since becoming eligible is surprising.
Hopefully Donna Summer garners enough support this time around.
I always thought Heart was hurt by its slick 80s material (like Chicago). It's nice to see the HOF committee give the band a nod. Heart was never a big critical favorite, but the ladies (and the band) did rock in the 70s and all.

HG, I think it will be tough for Donna with rockers Joan Jett and Heart garnering attention. I think they're both strong contenders for the female slot/s.

^That could be- but, at the least, Donna eventually will get her time. All of these nominations eventually should lead to induction.

^It's had, what, six nods? Yes, the time will come for Chic, too. As noted, acts have had 10 and 8 nominations before eventual induction. :)
Some of these waits make first-year-eligible inductees all the more impressive, eh? But, most of those are no-brainers, really.

^What other future contenders do you think will get first time inductions for first year of eligibility like Ms Ciccone?

Is U2 eligible yet? They should be a first year induction I would think.
