Yeah, but there's really only one album that's sold "well" this year. Not true. One album has sold 'exceptionally well'. But quite a few others have sold very well. Gaga for instance has been accused of having a so so era but is currently 1 million ahead of Beyonce and only released a month earlier. Lil Wayne is 700k ahead and released 2 months after Beyonce. Rank - Sales - TITLE - Artist 01 - 3,996,000 - 21 - Adele 02 - 1,851,000 - BORN THIS WAY - Lady GaGa 03 - 1,551,000 - THA CARTER IV - Lil Wayne 04 - 1,236,000 - MY KINDA PARTY - Jason Aldean 05 - 1,233,000 - SIGH NO MORE - Mumford & Sons 06 - 975,000 - WATCH THE THRONE - Jay-Z & Kanye West 07 - 849,000 - 4 - Beyonce

LOL @ outlasting Ashanti and Ciara. You say that as if those 2 were ever in the same league as Bey or Alicia (though I'll admit that Ashanti was actually pretty popular for a time period). I agree that it's harder for popstars post-30 to stay relevant especially with the scene how it is now but at the same time, that is not why the "4" era singles aren't doing well [ON POP]. It's not about people moving on from Beyonce, it's just horrible single management this time around like I said in the other thread. The album generally isn't what's trendy in pop music rn and even though she has some songs that could do well mainstream, her label keeps confusing radio and sending out the wrong stuff. I think they started off on a bad foot singles wise and it's usually hard to turn an era around after it starts. But that said, and again, it's not as if the album is really struggling or anything. She's still selling well weekly.Namaste Lisping said it perfectly. But she isn't! She sold 15k in the US last week and 31k Worldwide. Awful figures. 15k is hardly awful, especially when she's still borderline Top 20 on the album charts. Ya'll stay tryna come for Bey and Rih damn.

When was the last time the lead single from a Beyonce album failed to make the top 10, regardless of quality? Now we are on the 6th single with no major hit. 6th single? 'Countdown' is the 3rd mainstream single. I'll give you 4th ('Party') but which were the other 2 exactly? She's still selling well weekly.
But she isn't! She sold 15k in the US last week and 31k Worldwide. Awful figures.
She is doing that off her own name, without major airplay hits and outselling people with consecutive top 10 singles week by week. How's that awful? I really don't think it is ??? an act like Rihanna is not in the league of a Mimi Carey, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, or anyone that she passes on the No. 1s list (though because of her producers and writers, she's had more singles rack up critical success than Carey or Houston) 'Umbrella' has been her only widely-acclaimed single to my knowledge so far..

And the WW number is low because she hasn't really been promoting in other countries in months (besides the Aussie interview) and the album generally would do better in the US anyway because strict R&B isn't as globally accessible as D Guetta dancebeats.

Bey only did 300k. If you subtract the first week sales for all 3, none of them would be million sellers. Interesting to note that we only have 5 million sellers in October (another all time low). If Bey ends up being one of the 10-15 million sellers of 2011, how on Earth is that a poor showing ??? Number of million sellers in: 1992: 57 1993: 64 1994: 69 1995: 64 1996: 56 1997: 70 1998: 81 1999: 88 2000: 88 2001: 1002002: 65 2003: 69 2004: 65 2005: 48 2006: 52 2007: 39 2008: 25 2009: 22 2010: 132011: 5 so far Also, number of 2 million sellers: 1992: N/A 1993: 18 1994: 24 1995: 21 1996: 18 1997: 22 1998: 30 1999: 29 2000: 322001: 26 2002: 21 2003: 14 2004: 20 2005: 12 2006: 7 2007: 8 2008: 4 2009: 5 2010: 4 2011: 1 so far

All 4 were THE new R&B it girl for at least a year in the 2000s when they debuted. Ciara was the least big of the 4, but still pretty popular in '04-06.

I think Beyonce and Gaga have sold well. Beyonce will sell over a million without any major hits and Gaga will do over 2 during her "flop backlash" era and both having much, much less airplay than people selling around what they do or with other eras of their own in the past. Adele is the obvious winner of the year, but you don't have to be Adele to do well for yourself.
**unpopular opinion**
Haven't album sales been up a bit this year anyway? At least so far?

^Overall yes, but it's mostly catalogue sales that are causing the up-turn, the big current titles are still down yet again (save for Adele). I think if we have less than 13 million-sellers this year (less than last year), that definitely won't be a good sign.

Yes, 160m maximum for Adele then, if RITD is anything to by, a slooooowwwwww decline from there. It can't be stressed enough for a 100% piano and voice driven ballad to do what it has will go down in history (it actually already has according to billboard). I can see a clear run for Rihanna next week (although this week could be very close), unless the sales spike due to the video is short lived (can't see it myself).

I think SLY will be #1 again this week for sure. Dont think WFL will end up selling 275k+ copies. I see it at #2 this week, if it manages to outpace MLJ, then have a better chance next.

When anyone talks about Gaga's sales figures for BTW I don't think it is fair considering her album sold for 99 cents on Amazon and I might be wrong, but I think about half of her sales that first week came from that

Beysus, that is true about "Umbrella"- it's far more acclaimed than any single by the aforementioned acts. But, she also had a few others get so-so year-end notices ("SOS," "Live Your Life," "Disturbia," and, not sure about 2010, but I think "Love the Way You Lie"- course, she was featured on that and LYL).
Hopefully SLY can take No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay this week. A negative update for Ms. Lopez? Apparently not enough peeps are moving their body and dancing for their "Papi."

How can this be used as any sort of rational argument? ??? ??? You were talking about how they've held up, ie sold in the long run since their release. So how much they sell in their first week makes it look very distorted as it gives Gaga and Wayne huge head starts. Just means their albums were more hyped and more anticipated than Bey's. Also, if Bey put her album for 99 cents, she would've opened with much more

Lil Wayne is still selling more than Bey though, and Gaga is selling around the same, despite selling a million more copies.

Lil Wayne is still selling more than Bey though With twice as much airplay and 'How To Love' was really big, not to mention a more recent album. I would be surprised if he didn't. Beysus, that is true about "Umbrella"- it's far more acclaimed than any single by the aforementioned acts. I only remembered 'Disturbia' getting some praise, but I'll take your word :)

Okay let's get back to the discussion of the Hot 100 chart. I don't understand why we keep veering off with the shade on people's album sales or shade on people's cultural impact.

Are you guys forgetting that Beyonce is freakin pregnant?? She is obviously not promoting as much and doing as many TV appearances because of it, which is probably affecting her sales. The promotional support that did exist was very front-loaded since she was pregnant (videos being shot, TV appearances earlier). Just give it a damn break and let her conceive her child properly. Who knows, she might not have even wanted a big huge multi-format #1 hit because of the fact that she was planning for a child. Its not like she desperately needed one anyway. Let's just agree this is a decent selling album with decent-sized hits for a worldwide superstar who is currently going through her first pregnancy.

1. ADELE - Someone Like You: 156.108 (+ 0.465) 2. MAROON 5 F/CHRISTINA AGUILERA - Moves Like Jagger: 151.948 (+ 0.294)
I honestly would've never guessed 6 months ago that these 2 artists would have the biggest airplay hits now. I expect both to continue to make small gains for the next few days due to their continuing rise on rhythmic and minimal decreases/slight increases on pop and hot ac. Adele is also closing in on the top spot on AC where she has a shot of making the top 2 next week and possibly replacing herself at #1 in 2 weeks (depending on how many stations start going XMAS on us).

Even if you subtracted ALL amazon sales (which would be inaccurate in itself-first, another version was for sale which amazon said sold a lot as well and even if all versions were normally priced she would have sold some still from amazon even if not as much) she still would have opened with 700K+ and sold 1.5 million at this point. Still huge numbers-I feel like people exaggerate the discount on Amazon because of their personal feelings about Gaga. I don't see anyone shrieking that the constant discounts for under 5 dollars for many popular albums throughout their entire run "shouldn't count" for any reason or that it is "unfair." This is a Hot 100 thread though-I thought it was the Billboard 200 thread lol. Good to see MLJ hit around 150 million-would have NEVER guessed that would happen in a million years. Like, even if it was a hit I expected it to be more of the moderate kind and not unbelievable smash one of the biggest of the year kind.

It is a testament to Bey because she is a hard worker even with that bun in her oven. It's not like she disappeared off of the face of the planet...it is obvious why this era is underperforming not flopping. Just enjoy the next singles and the future award show appearances and cut the excuses. Now the gaga crap...how many artist are we going to go through when all of doing well in one way or another.

Also, if Bey put her album for 99 cents, she would've opened with much more Fantastic spin you've put on the situation there. You should be in politics. PS It actually means more people wanted to buy those albums......doesn't it? ???

The argument made was that Bey's album wasn't having legs becuase of it's overall sales being half of Gaga, or something along those lines. I'm making the point that Gaga's only way ahead becuase she had a larger first week. (Both albums are selling about the same week on week now.) And I'm saying that first week sales are irrelevant to whether an album has legs or not. (There's plenty of albums they debut big and fall hard.) I might've worded it unclear. As for for the 99 cents remark, I was only joking -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back on topic, looks like SLY is finally start to peak, hopefully RihRih can take #1 on Hot 100 this week or next.
