Well, yes, that makes sense then- Nielsen Media purchased SoundScan at some point; it was not always the owner, correct?
prodigy- the music-videos thing has been discussed before. At last explanation, iTunes was the only outlet that sold music videos as downloads (plus the figures likely are nowhere near sales levels of audio titles). So, then iTunes' exact sales numbers would be available, which it does not want. Of course, if an audio track is an iTunes exclusive, no way around the sales figures being known for such an instance.

how many times is a song allowed to re-enter? Until they reach a certain position on the chart?

It means at least five with both songs (minimum 5+5) I thought SLY was only at week 3 for some reason. ??? Had no idea this was week #5. Crazy!

For tracks that peak above the top 50 and then drop below it after 20 weeks on the chart, they go to recurrent, unless they are being actively promoted at at least one radio format. Not sure if the 20-week rule applies to tracks that do not peak in the top 50?

If the track is gaining I think it's allowed to chart even if it has 20+ week and is below Top 50 and hasn't yet climbed further. But if the bullet is negative, it drops out.
Not 100% sure though

mumford & Sons' Little Lion Man never made the top 50 and hung around for 20+ weeks and I'm positive it got booted as a recurrent. It "re-entered" for one week in the 40's after they performed at the Grammys.

"Don't You Wanna Stay" was a recent example of flipping between the recurrent chart and the Hot 100.

What about ringtones? iTunes is not the only exclusive seller of those.

Ringtones aren't full tracks, though, correct? :) Billboard has a ringtones chart.

Yes overexposure will sink in eventually yes it will. I would think it would have RIGHT NOW, but it hasn't. But then again, she's only 23. I can't even imagine what it must be like to be 23 and that successful. I don't even know her last name. Robyn Rihanna Fenty

Thanks for posting. Some of those numbers are odd- the album version of "Criminal" had sold just 35K or so before last week? And why is that total for "On the Floor" only show 158K? The one charting is the version that has sold the bulk, no?

Some of these single sales are pretty low. Do you think it's because album sales are slowly increasing?

For tracks that peak above the top 50 and then drop below it after 20 weeks on the chart, they go to recurrent, unless they are being actively promoted at at least one radio format. Not sure if the 20-week rule applies to tracks that do not peak in the top 50? I've always assumed it does. I think it's just that a track can't chart below the top 50 after week #20, regardless of its peak. Can anyone confirm?

SPREE, I'm sure d.t.m. (as others) knows charts are just charts and do not mean anything more other than measuring a track's initial popularity. We've had this discussion a few times at least on this board, right? Just as someone like Mimi Carey isn't anywhere near being in the league of Elvis, Beatles, Michael Jackson and Madonna (they're far and away from others, as it should be), an act like Rihanna is not in the league of a Mimi Carey, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, or anyone that she passes on the No. 1s list (though because of her producers and writers, she's had more singles rack up critical success than Carey or Houston Actually, Rihanna co-wrote 7 out of the 13 songs on the "Rated R" album. And she is listed as "Creative Director" and Executive Producer" for the "Loud Album." And while she may not be a prolific songwriter, she has said herself that she only works with songwriters who can craft material that is tailored to her voice and style. Just because one doesn't write or produce most of their material doesn't mean that they aren't creatively involved in what they do. Furthermore, Whitney Houston isn't a songwriter either, so by your logic, all of her success and No. 1s would be attributed to her songwriters and producers as well.

Do we really know that she cowrote 7 out of 13 songs on her album or is it simply an assumption from reading the label. It is interesting to note that Elvis Presley cowrote most if not all of his songs. However, the truth is that his crafty manager Colonial Tom Parker DEMANDED cowriter credits on any song that Elvis sang, as a way to maximize his brand (not to mention opening him up to additional royalities on those songs). Unless we have substantiation, we should question these claims.

We don't see any artist actually doing it. So it's funny you just chose to single Rihanna out there. And I'm well aware that songwriting credits can be bought, but it seems to me if Rihanna was going to slap her name on other people's songs, she would do it for ALL of her material--not just the songs on the "Rated R" album. She didn't take credit for writing anything on previous releases or on her recent "Loud" album.
