LMFAO - Sexy and I Know It. No other artists could be taken seriously with this. Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know It All. Average song at best. I never saw what was so special about it. Lady Gaga - Born This Way. If it's new Gaga, people will know about it even if she sings the phone book. Anything by Justin Bieber. "Somebody to Love" was really his only decent song.

All three of these songs suck and only were hits due to riding on prior accomplishments.

You guys really don't understand how "Sexy And I Know It" was a hit of its own accord?

I feel that the majority of songs named in this thread are really just "songs that I don't understand why other people like them." Not quite what this thread was going for. I would say that what we're looking for is songs that peaked high and early, but fell fast. Also songs that are kind of pointless but managed to get good radio airplay because of the artist's name. I can think of a few of those.

But thinking they're kinda pointless is just you not understanding why other people like them.

But thinking they're kinda pointless is just you not understanding why other people like them. Not really. If they are objectively popular they are objectively popular. I'm talking about songs that seemed to do well despite people being relatively indifferent about them, not songs that stans supported just because they like the artist. There might be some overlap, but I consider them different categories.

I just think that's something that can only be subjective. Who is relatively indifferent about them and why do their opinions count more than the stans? If any artist has enough stans to make a song a hit then it's a hit.

If any artist has enough stans to make a song a hit then it's a hit. Thinking a song sucks is subjective. Whether a song was widely considered a good song, or whether it was just meh in the eyes of the public as a whole is an objective inquiry. Stans and radio stations can absolutely make a song a hit without it being truly popular. When you hear the term "overkill" or (for some reason I'm blanking on the other term that is frequently used... ) IMO it is often referring to that kind of situation. I agree with you that if an artist happens to have a lot of fans who all love the song, that's one thing. Their opinions don't cease to count simply because they are fans. However, if a stan is only supporting a song because of the artist, and not because they like the song, it doesn't make the song good or popular. Admittedly, it's difficult to know the mind of anyone. I'm not holding anyone to proof beyond a reasonable doubt, I'm just asking for opinions. If someone disagrees with a particular example I would suggest debating the example rather than using the cop-out of implying the person is a bitter hater.

Anyone got a recurrent airplay chart? I am guessing that Born This Way is well below the hits off her first album. It certainly will be so over the next five to ten years. Similarly, Sexy and I Know It will get far less recurrent airplay than Party Rock Anthem despite being a massive hit in its own right.

Similarly, Sexy and I Know It will get far less recurrent airplay than Party Rock Anthem despite being a massive hit in its own right. On last Sunday's pop chart, "Born This Way" had 798 spins. That's well above all the hits off her first two albums. ;) "Bad Romance" had 603, "Just Dance" had 570, "Poker Face" had 468, "Telephone" had 324, "Paparazzi" had 306, "Alejandro" had 144" and "LoveGame" had 104. The only songs to have more spins than "Born This Way" were "The Edge of Glory" (1,332), "YoΓΌ and I" (979) and of course "Marry the Night".

Mariah's TGIFY only hit num.1 on Billboards Hot 100 due to held back single release with reduced sales pricing at a time when some singles weren't even physically released. Lol. The only reason it even feels like a hit is because the Billboard chart says it was. Lol. Even some of the Lambs don't really consider it a true/memorable num.1 hit. Still at the time without any tricks by the label and if ALL singles were available to buy like today. It probably would have been considered a very minor hit.
I thought Gwen's Whine It Up was a flop and even peaked at raido poorly? Back in the late 90's you could get a high peak buy releasing a physical single due to the sales-airplay ratio rule Billboard used.
Some of my are older songs as well as new. Donna Summer- The Wanderer- Peaked at num.3 for a few weeks. Even Donna has barely sang this live. This was her 1st batch of 80's trobules. This came off of her string of hits from another label and a shift in music.
Whitney Houston- Miracle- It hit the top 10 but I don't even remember hearing it on the raido or seeing the video.
I was going to say Born This Way wouldn't have been as big of a hit as it was but, it's starting to feel like a longer lasting hit than I initally thought it was going to be.
Someone mentioned Michael's first two songs off of Bad. I agree with IJCSLY but, I feel like Bad was a HIT at the time.
I believe it only made a small dent at raido.

Yeah I guess I am interpreting the question differently. Like, I don't think LMFAO's overwhelming credibility and dominant name in the music industry somehow forced Sexy and I Know It to be a hit even though people don't like it. I have heard it once and completely understand why it is doing well as a novelty type hit and think it probably would have smashed the same released by someone else or without PRA even existing.

Or a hit, for that matter. I would say Britney's singles this year (except Criminal, obviously), sort of fit this bill. They've all been massive radio hits - which has always been elusive for Britney singles - yet neither the songs themselves nor the album has sold all that well. It's a very interesting era in that regard.

"Because Of Lov" β Janet Jackson
Lord knows why that mess was even released when they had "Any Time, Any Place", "You Want This" and "Where Are You Now" waiting in the wings.

... "Rude Boy" came directly after "Russian Roulette" and "Hard", you know.

"Rude Boy" is clearly the antithesis of what this thread is supposedly about.

Lady Gaga - Born This Way. I think it was also a case where Lady Gaga was coming off of such a string of successes that she could have pretty much released anything at that time and it would have done well. She really should have released something that was even riskier just for the sake of doing so. "Government Hooker" and "Americano" would have been good choices.
