Name the songs you consider to have only become "hits" because of the track record or industry credibility of the artist singing them (i.e., not the record's individual merit).

Lady Gaga - Born This Way. & "You And I". Also I might get a lot of crap for this but although I like these songs, I definitely think "3", "Hold It Against Me", "Till The World Ends", and "I Wanna Go" were hits just because of Britney's credibility as a pop icon. Think about it, a lot of her most well-known songs like "Oops", "Crazy", and "Toxic" didn't do as well as those did.

Britney didn't receive a lot of radio support at her peak. And in 2001, Clear Channel banned her songs from radio after she signed with Pepsi instead for her tour. That's why "Slave" didn't peak as high as her recent singles and it's one of her signature/classic songs.

I disagree. "Oops" and "Toxic" were both multi-week Pop #1's. IWG was her only pop #1 this era and it was for only 1 week.

Carrie Underwood - LAST NAME (horrible song but the vocal was perfect and Carrie was awesome but still an awful song)
Taylor Swift - TODAY WAS A FAIRYTALE and JUMP THEN FALL (Taylor can do better than these, her other songs were great except these two)
Bruno Mars - LAZY SONG (i still don't get it why people are going gaga for this song)
Miranda Lambert - WHITE LIAR
Jason Aldean - DIRT ROAD ANTHEM (one of the worst songs in 2011 that became a hit)

Miranda Lambert - WHITE LIAR How do you venture that? This was Miranda's first Top 5 hit, so it certainly didn't get there based on her name recognition. The 1, 2 punch of this and THTBM is what made her the format superstar she currently is, and it's still not enough to assure her No. 1 hits.

Carrie Underwood - Mama's Song ~ Bad song, point blank. Taylor Swift - Mine ~ If this were to have been done by any other up and coming artist in Country, I doubt it would reach Top 20. Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song

But i don't really like the song and i don't know it did well. Unlike THTBM (which deserved the success)

I don't believe that there is such a thing as a hit entirely based on the artist's momentum/credibility. There is certainly such a thing as a hit by the fact that the artist performing it was performing it, but a song needs to have some strong appeal in itself to actually become a hit. For example, "The One That Got Away", which is currently #3 on the pop chart and has a decent chance at reaching #2 or #1. It's clear that being the follow-up to six consecutive number one hits helped it, but if it was an offensive song, a very left-field song, a "bad" song in general, or just did not connect with the pop audience for some other reason, chances are it would not be charting this successfully, even though the recording artist would still be Katy Perry. Another example is the obvious "Judas" - even though it came off the back of eight big hits, seven of them being number ones, it failed to make it past #15, and it was out of the top 40 within two weeks of peaking. You can't have much more momentum than Gaga had, yet look how "Judas" performed. tl;dr - there's no such thing. I disagree. "Oops" and "Toxic" were both multi-week Pop #1's. IWG was her only pop #1 this era and it was for only 1 week. Two weeks. "I Gotta Feeling-" The Black Eyed Peas "Love You Like A Love Song"- Selena Gomez How?

Maybe HIAM because of its quick rise and even quicker fall but the other 3 were all radio hits that had a good amount of longevity.

I'd replace "Artist's Cred" with "Hype". Run The World only got in the top 40 because it was Beyonce, Judas only got top 40 because it was GaGa.
Songs that reach top 10 are obviously well received and not just popular because of the artist. Obviously, it helps, but if a song isn't "good enough" to be top 10, it won't be top 10.
imo

I would not place "Run The World" or "Judas" in that category.

I think most songs that have fast rises are due to hype. Though then I can't help but wonder about debut singles that have rises though I suppose new artists can have built-up hype too.
Though it's hard to actually pinpoint the reason why those songs are hits because a lot of them, they're legitimately good songs that go on to have extended chart lives even if they got their start from the hype of the artist.

Mariah Carey - "Shake It Off"
I could name many flop singles of hers that are infinitely better than this.

I would say...
Kelly Clarkson - "Never Again"
She was coming off of a huge smash era, and released a less commercial song that debuted at number 8, and then proceeded to plummet. I wouldn't say it ONLY did decently because of the hype, but it certainly had no legs. I'm not saying it's a bad song (in fact, it's one of my favorites), but I think it only got to the top ten because it was KELLY CLARKSON'S NEW SINGLE!!!!!!

It was a promotional single, if I'm not mistaken. From wikipedia: "1+1" is a song recorded by American recording artist BeyoncΓ© Knowles for her fourth studio album, 4 (2011). Knowles debuted the song on May 25, 2011, on American Idol, and digitally released it as a promotional single in the United States through Columbia Records.

Yah, can't go by Hot 100 peaks all the time. And, I'm still waiting for the proof that ALL Clear Channel stations did not play Britney Spears music from 2001-2003. Probably a case of playing her less than they did fr the first couple of albums. Oftentimes, when an act is at their commercial peak, they could release anything and see it zoom to or near the top of the charts.

"I Gotta Feeling-" The Black Eyed Peas "Love You Like A Love Song"- Selena Gomez How? I think for BEP "Imma Be" and "The Time" would be more fitting for this thread. Especially "Imma Be". Ugh, how did that get to #1?

Kelly Clarkson, "I Do Not Hook Up." I don't think it's a bad song, but given its sales and complete lack of any recurrent play, it's obvious no1curred and only did well on pop radio coming off the heels of MLWSWY and her "comeback" momentum.
Also, Carrie Underwood's last three singles, "The One That Got Away, and--yes--"Someone Like You.". Now, the song is brilliant, but I think it was only so completely embraced by radio because of Adele's success and momentum. Had that been the lead single, or had RITD and her album not caught on like wild fire, I don't think it would have been as successful, particularly on radio.

It wasn't? But it's a hit. :o Jump Then Fall was a deluxe Edition track that got released on Itunes back in October 2009.Yes it may have peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 but Fifteen was the radio single at the time.
