Hmm...is 400k enough for #1? I wouldn't think so. I think 400k seems too low of an estimate but I'm sure they k ow more about it than I do. The other possibility is that WAY really began to fall this past week. Yay for Kelly seeing a gain today. That might help her squeak out another week at #1 on Radio Songs if WAY begins to slow some more. She should have this week in the bag but 3 weeks will be tough.

Let's say Billboard underestimated (I see them underestimate way more than I see them overestimate; they like to play it safe). So let's say Justin B. sold 425k and fun. fell to 350k. Is that enough to hold off Bieber?

^Depends on where the BDS numbers fall (BDS numbers now are lower than usual when compared to Mediabase numbers, and if Bieber had any notable On-Demand action.

Unless Beiber sells 450k, I think #1 is out of the question. #2 is pretty much guaranteed though.

"All time" being since 2003, of course.
HITS:
THIS JUSTIN: Island Def Jam recording artist Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” has sold a total of 520k downloads this week, landing #2 in first-week singles sales all-time behind Flo Rida’s “Right Round” f/Ke$ha, which scored 636k. The track’s performance surpasses the first week of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which opened with 447k after only three days of release, and Black Eyed Peas’ "Boom Boom Pow,” with 465k. (4/2p)

So, it appears that "Boyfriend" will be the highest debut position for a male artist on the Hot 100 since Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie," right?

If "Boyfriend" snatches #1 this week, then he'll be the first teenage artist to hit #1 since Colby O'Donis did it in January 2009 with Lady Gaga in "Just Dance." He was 19 at the time.
He will also be the first of all the latest Disney starlets & their related friends to get #1 ever. Miley almost got one with "Party in the U.S.A.," but she failed to get past "I Gotta Feeling." If you want to include Taylor in with that crowd, she also almost got one with "You Belong with Me," also blocked by "I Gotta Feeling."
Surprisingly, though, Hilary, Miley, and Selena have all beaten him on getting a top 10 hit on pop radio. Even Miley beat him on getting a #1 on pop radio. (Include Taylor with both of those tallies if you want.)

"Ever" is a big word.
But defining "latest group" as beginning with Miley Cyrus seems fine.
As for the prior generation, weren't Britney, Justin (Timberlake - not Beiber) and a few others Mouseketeers?

(4/2p) I knew he was going to blow away Billboard's prediction of only 400k. I was like, really? *side eye* He was selling what 3 times last weeks #1 song was selling for like 3 days.... and that former #1 was selling like 400k...

And, reportedly, there was no airplay promo for Bieber's track. So radio surely launched Biebs' track in a way it never has launched a new Biebs track before.
As a sidenote, the amount of airplay gains these days for the top-gaining tracks is larger than it would have been prior to Mediabase's numbers adjustment.

The only way Bieber is not number 1 is if WAY gained even more, which would be unbelievable.

The last young male solo artist to hit #1 Hot 100 was Sean Kingston i guess.

He needs to enjoy it while it last. He won't be in the industry anymore in 5 years.

There is On-Demand songs as well. That has remained unpredictable in its impact.
520k is quite possibly enough to make it to #1, though.

But Bieber still looks like a 15 year old to me, so...

Bieber should definitely be number 1. Even if WAY sells 400k, Boyfriend will have a 120k sales advantage, but will only be behind ~60-70m in airplay. I don't think On-Demand songs will make a difference.
