I'm not sure if "courtesy of such-and-such records" constitutes listeners being aware of an airplay-promo deal. And that's not even a widespread action with stations and airplay promos. In my area, I never heard the "courtesy of Interscope" when GMAYL was played hourly. And on a station like Z-100 in NY, it wasn't a constant.

Pitbull's not a rapper.

He has admitted it himself in even some of his earliest recordings, regarding himself as a businessman and a hustler! ;)

I think that may be the main reason why I don't rip on Pitbull in a way I otherwise would hypothetically. By his own admissions, I choose to rate him on a different scale: how well he sells himself and his fellow artists in the form of beats. And all in all, I think he makes business sound fun more often than not.

But yes, there's no denying his lyrics are usually atrocious. I think that's intentional on Pitbull's end, though, in that he strikes me as rather well-educated from the interviews I've seen, much like Nicki Minaj, who also writes many atrocious lyrics.

Bieber's "Boyfriend" launches at No. 20 with 3,961 first-week plays on 129 of the chart's 134 reporters (an average of 31 plays per station), marking the best first-week plays sum for a song by a male artist in the chart's almost 20-year history. The song also ties for the seventh-best positional start among all acts in the tally's archives.

The arrival of "Boyfriend" is all the more impressive given Bieber's track record at Pop Songs, where the teen star has yet to log a top 10. Despite his sales success (8 million albums sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and high social media profile (19 million Twitter followers), Bieber has charted only as high as No. 14 with debut hit "One Time" in 2009.

"Boyfriend" is set for a likewise lofty launch on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, aided by approximately 400,000 first-week downloads, according to industry projections. Check Billboard.com Wednesday (April 4) for the earliest highlights of the Hot 100 and Digital Songs charts.
