BELIEB IT OR NOT: The new Justin Bieber IDJ album, Believe, is out and selling even better than expected, as indicated by early sales figures from our usual gang of crack (ed) retail reporters. All indications are that it could be the biggest debut of the year and, needless to say, a lock for #1 next week. The previous mark was set by Madonna’s MDNA, which sold nearly 360k when it was released in March, though many of those were through a Ticketmaster bundle for her upcoming U.S. tour.

Better than expected. Too bad no one ever said what was expected and how it's doing now...
And duh it's gonna beat Madonna. I'd be super shocked if it didn't.

This gives us a little time to throw our bets out there. I'll say 690K.

I posted this in the Usher thread:
The last New Release Schedule I received in early May had Justin Bieber at 793k. I don't know if they have changed it since then.
How high will the Biebs go?

From Billboard:
Justin Bieber's "Believe" album is on course to net the singer his best sales week yet -- and the biggest debut of the year. Industry sources suggest that the set, which came out today (June 19), may sell between 400,000 to 500,000 copies by the end of the tracking period on June 24. (However, it's still very early in the week, so those sales projections will change on a daily basis.) If "Believe" does sell in the 400,000 to 500,000 range, that would easily secure Bieber his largest sales frame yet. His highest week thus far came when "My World 2.0" sold 291,000 in its second week on the chart in April, 2010. "Believe" could also land the largest debut this year for an album. It would surpass the start of Madonna's "MDNA," which launched with 359,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The best sales frame overall in 2012 was registered by Adele's "21" in the wake of her multiple Grammy Awards wins in February. It sold 730,000 in the week after the Grammy show.) "Believe" will most certainly open at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. If it does, it will be his fourth chart-topping set, following "My World 2.0," "Never Say Never: The Remixes" (EP) and "Under the Mistletoe." The final sales figures for "Believe" will be released on Wednesday, June 27.

Hopefully, he doesn't top Adele's Grammy effect week.

Moar interested in Smashing Pumpkins numbers. Kenny will outsell them, but I'm sure that SP and Fiona will be in the top 10.

400-500 seems a bit low. I was expecting a 500k LOCK with a fairly good shot at 600 and a small chance at 700.

Hmm, lower than expected. However, the first day of sales isn't even over. Plus who knows if Amazon's gonna do a $3.49 deal or something.

Great numbers especially when you consider a lot of pop stars barely do over 200K. I know it is different because he is a teen star, but these are respectable numbers to me especially since he is approaching the usual "end" of the usual teen star career. I am more interested in the next few weeks. People were predicting that he would stay at #1 and hold off both M5 and Linkin Park, but that would be an AMAZING hold if he did. Like, dropping only 50%. I am assuming M5 and LP will at least flirt with 200K.

It is certainly respectable, and very, very good numbers. I just expected him to do more based on his buzz. I don't think anyone is complaining with 400-500 prediction by any means

I predicted 450k in the previous HITS thread. I'm obviously holding to that now

Underperformance. Young people just aren't buying albums anymore.

I don't usually pay attention to Billboard predictions, but do they factor in actual sales data beforehand, or predict like we do here?

Also, why some are saying these numbers are not fantastic baffles me. I think a lot of you think Bieber is more popular than he really is. These are fantastic numbers. 400K is way more than I expected. I expected 325k.

Yah- "Boyfriend" sold a helluva lot of singles in its first week, but we know that, comparatively, album sales don't usually fare as well. 400K-500k would be pretty darn good.

Also, Billy Corgan needs to change the pumpkins name, they are not the pumpkins anymore. The only reason he uses the name is for the recognition. After his solo album bombed he decided to create solo album under the pumpkins name which is obvious. They are not the pumpkins without Iha, Darcy, or Chamberlin.

Going to predict: 576,424.
Definitely in the 400-600k range. Having no knowledge of its sales so far, it's a complete shot in the dark... But I definitely think it'll beat Adele's biggest week. I think their current prediction is on the conservative side.

All I will say about these sales is this: If my memory serves me well, and I've been following sales for about 4 years now, EVERY time HITS/Billboard have predicted sales figures before the 1st day was done, the final numbers have been much higher than the original projection. Usually 100k-150k. We'll see if the trend holds up.

I was expecting at least Drake numbers (mid 600k's).
Taylor did over 1 million, it's possible for artists that appeal to a rabid young fanbase to debut huge in this day and age.
I'm more interested to see if he holds up in the next weeks though like My World 2.0 did. If he sells 450k this week but delivers several weeks over 200k that would be equally as impressive as debuting massive and then falling like most albums do nowadays.
