Although, OMN and Payphone may not have existed without MLJ. MLJ gave them (by them, I mean Adam) the idea to go more poppy/70s/funky/whatever the heck he calls it. Psy's airplay has really stopped growing all of a sudden. Looks like #2 will be his peak. Ke$ha, on the other hand, continues to close the gap between herself and Maroon 5!

I'm currently guessing around 250k for Taylor; maybe a bit higher.

I was thinking of mentioning this when I read the conversation this morning. If it weren't for Moves Like Jagger, they'd still be releasing Makes Me Wonder babies.

Oh dear. "Gangnam Style" is never gonna go #1 is it? I'm not even sure I have heard that Maroon 5 song, but I hated Payphone and have only really liked "This Love" of theirs (although Moves Like Jagger was OK, I suppose), so I guess I won't like it.

When will Christmas music start affecting airplay? Usually the day after thanksgiving sees a sudden rush.

Radio programmers are saying one thing and the general public is saying another. I think Billboard should move to get rid of the airplay component from the charts altogether or at least diminish its influence. The two sales components should have at least 3 times the influence on the charts as the airplay component.

I was thinking of mentioning this when I read the conversation this morning. If it weren't for Moves Like Jagger, they'd still be releasing Makes Me Wonder babies. It took a real visionary and risk-taker, thinking of and creating music ahead of its time, to inspire M5 and push them beyond their comfort zone. Someone who could REALLY sing vocally and use her pipes and humbly contribute to the benefit of others. It's true that some people did not get it at the beginning, but then everyone really GOT the song and proved to be a classic hit. Thanks, savior CHRISTina!! :'(

Pop is really the only format for this novelty record and it has done very well there. HAC is making the HUGE difference for the other acts you mention. If the chart was the pre-1998 H100 (pop airplay only and sale) GS would've been #1 for several weeks, but it's not.

And you don't need to go back to 1998, a few months ago before Billboard gave more power to radio it would have been no. 1 already.
At least this time people are actually buying OMN, unlike the other recent examples of radio sticking to a song for ages.

I think Maroon 5 would have had their hits with or without MLJ. Maybe not as big but for some reason, they've been able to stay relevant to pop audiences even despite some of their lighter pop releases from the last album. Misery was still a pretty big hit and Adam Levine has had a few collaborations of his own. I think MLJ gave them a slightly hipper edge as a band who can be sassy where other bands would look lame doing that type of song. It simply expanded their image so songs like Payphone and OMN can having plenty of breathing room. EDIT: I just noticed Au$tin said this earlier: Although, OMN and Payphone may not have existed without MLJ. MLJ gave them (by them, I mean Adam) the idea to go more poppy/70s/funky/whatever the heck he calls it.

Who's to say they would have even recorded "Payphone" or "One More Night" without having a hit with "Moves Like Jagger"? It's kind of pointless to argue where they would be if "Moves Like Jagger" was never a hit.

Could you imagine the bitching and moaning if billboard got rid of AirPlay in their main chart? Wasn't it just like a week ago when billboard added digital(and other airplay) to the urban and country charts and half the board had a melt down? Would people be ok with Taylor having 4 #1 billboard hits already this era? :$ There's a digital chart there's a airplay chart and theirs a chart that combines both...win win for everyone, yes/no?

Airplay flashback (January, 24 1998)
The week when 'My Heart Will Go On' went like a rocket. The song eventually peaked at 221 M and became one of the biggest airplay songs ever.
1. CHUMBAWAMBA - Thumbtumping: 143.006 (- 0.517) 2. SMASH MOUTH - Walkin' On The Sun: 128.674 (+ 0.416) 3. SUGAR RAY - Fly: 127.126 (- 0.987) 4. CELINE DION - My Heart Will Go On: 113.324 (+ 7.129) 5. USHER - You Make Me Wanna....: 110.513 (- 1.614)
The calculations from this flashback are how much airplay the song would have in 2012. That means that having 100 M in 1998 would be around 190 M in 2012

Fascinating: 2. 137.876 (- 0.252) 3. 132.995 (- 0.115) 4. 132.922 (- 1.817) 5. TAYLOR SWIFT β We Are Never Ever Gettingβ¦: 131.028 (+ 0.724)
I'm surprised honestly. With country dropping Never as soon as they could, I didn't think the song would even re-match its radio peak (#3), let alone possibly beating it.

Where are these "flashback" numbers coming from? "My Heart Will Go On" peaked at 116m weekly BDS audience- so how would it have peaked at 221m Mediabase? The differences were never that big. Or, is this some kind of retroactive/adjustment/estimates taking int account Mediabase's expanded panel?
