#25A New Day Has Comefrom the album A New Day Has Come (2002) Celine went into a highly publicized retirement in 2000 following the huge success of Faling Into You and Let's Talk About Love and then the subsequent albums that came with those followed by her Greatest Hits record. So when she returned just two years later, I stopped taking retirements seriously (Jay-Z contributed to that as well). At least as far as the music business is concerned. A New Day Has Come was Celine's first single out of retirement and it marked a whole new change for her - at least for me. She seemed to be a new singer and it seemed almost distant to me. While I enjoyed the song for what it was, it took me years to warm up to it the way of her 90s stuff. While it was a pretty big hit overall, it became her lowest charting single on the Pop charts in over ten years and also her second last to chart at all as it peaked at #25. I've often wondered whether it was her time away in retirement or the song itself that resulted in such a drastic change for her success; she went from selling 11.8 and 10 of her last two studio albums, 5.2 million of her holiday record and 8 million of her Greatest hits to 3.3 million for this album. Now that ten years has passed, I understand and appreciate this song, the huge role it has in Celine's music career and willingly include it on my list of Celine's best!

I wasn't too crazy about "A New Day Has Come" until I heard the original version last year. Really good album, too.
I laugh when listening to "I'm Alive" because I'm reminded of the truncated music video playing in between shows on the Disney Channel as promotion for Stuart Little 2. Like Censor said, it's not a favorite of mine but it's nice.
Ugh and shame on you for not including "The Power of Love"! I have less to look forward to now but I'll still be following this.

I was actually surprised "A New Day Has Come" wasn't used in some way by the Obama campaign. I personally love the subtlety and soft vocals. I think it's incredibly unique for a pop song from a superstar. #ShouldBeHigher

#24My Heart Will Go Onfrom the album Let's Talk About Love (1997) I initially wasn't going to include this song at all because I have long reached a point where I can't listen to it anymore. Vastly overplayed, overrated, overeverything. But then I remembered: when I saw Titanic 3D in theatres last April, this song plays, albeit in instrumental form, probably 8 or 9 times throughout the movie. It reminded me of the first time I saw the movie in 1998, while the song was sailing high at the top of the charts and the sheer massive power it had. It probably single-handedly helped Celine's album sell 10 million copies; helped the Titanic soundtrack sell over 10 million copies; went to #1 across the board including Pop radio (10 weeks?) and the Hot 100; won the Academy Award for Best Song; The Golden Globe for Best Song; won 4 Grammys including Record and Song of the Year; and some say it disguised itself as an iceberg and travelled back in time to sink the ship that inspired it in the first place! Since I started following music, My Heart Will Go On is probably listed as one of the biggest songs I've ever experienced and it did it all in a pretty short chart run for how massive it was. It peaked and then it was gone. It spent 12 weeks at #1 on my own personal chart in 1998. It has just become the prime example of a song that became too much but stripping away the awards, the overplay and the general sentiment it has acquired since 1998 and this song is pretty great - even more impressive that it was recorded by Celine in one take, which was meant to be the demo version. It would have been a crime for me to NOT include this.

I was only like six or so during Titanic's heyday so I'm grateful that the song's reputation had little effect on me when I first heard it. I don't particularly find "My Heart Will Go On" to be any less cheesy than some of her other hits; I think it's more the association with all that came with it. So yeah, I can definitely understand you ranking it so low and I can't say that I blame you.
... I didn't realize I liked Celine's music this much? Anyway, here's hoping "Treat Her Like a Lady" sneaks its way into your countdown.

#23Let's Talk About Lovefrom the album Let's Talk About Love (1997) The title track from Celine's second blockbuster album was one of the few songs never released as a single in any territory. (Wikipedia lists the album as having had 9 singles overall!) This is the type of song that starts off quiet and almost lullaby-like but it breaks into an epic chorus, followed by a children's choir (that was always optional. I once made an edit that cut it out.) and finished with the final big chorus. It was always one of my favourites from the album and one I sometimes go back to.

Contender 1 Immortality [1997]from the album Let's Talk About LoveA #5 UK hit and #1 Canadian AC hit, this song features the Bee Gees and was one of the signature tunes from Celine's epic album Let's Talk About Love.

I do quite love this one. I was very fortunate to see her perform this in 1997 with The Bee Gees. |
Contender 2 Love Is On The Way [1997] from the album Let's Talk About Love
Another track from the same album, this worked as one of my favourite album tracks as it was never released as a single anywhere.
|
Solid track from LTAL. |
Contender 3 The Power Of Love [1993] from the album The Colour Of My Love
The first single from Celine's third english album, this song became Celine's first Hot 100 #1 and was perhaps the beginning of her domination, even though her next big hit wouldn't come for another few years. Celine's cover of The Power Of Love marked a new beginning for her that turned her from a singer from Canada with a few hits into someone that was inevitably going to become something more. While this song is a clear classic, it's a little too "love song" for me and coming from someone who's making a whole chart of Celine Dion songs, that's saying a lot.
|
Honestly, of her Hot 100 #1s, this is actually my least favorite! :O |
Contender 4 Alone [2007] from the album Taking Chances
Some might say that Celine covering a classic 80s Heart hit is blasphemy. I probably won't disagree but since the song was written by Diane Warren, one of Celine's top go-to songwriters for most of her career, it gives her a pass to cover it (much like Meatloaf having a pass for covering It's All Coming Back To Me Now. It's only fair). The song isn't a bad cover by any means but it doesn't hold a candle to Heart's. Still, I couldn't leave without mentioning my appreciation for Celine updating it and reminding people of its existence. I didn't need reminding since Alone is one of my favourite songs from the 80s period.
|
Her rendition got to #2 on my chart. I felt she did the song justice. |
Contender 5 Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) [2002] from the album A New Day Has Come
It's not a classic by any means but this was still a nice song from Celine's "comeback" album of 2002. It served as the album's third single and has back-up vocals by Shania Twain - and production by Robert "Mutt" Lange.
|
This one only got to #18 on my chart, not because it's weak, it's great. I was more into choosing my own singles then and "I Surrender" was my choice (hopes that's on the list!)

#30Taking Chancesfrom the album Taking Chances (2007) Actually considering that the song did as well as it did without any push to radio, and even Z100 was on board (it even made the Hot AC chart) there certainly was potential for this song. I think I've already mapped out what my strategy would've been for the album already.

#29I Want You To Need Mefrom the album All The Way... A Decade Of Song (1999) The hit that should've been! The song was actually most added at top 40 when it was released, but for some reason the single got pulled just before it cracked the top 50. I will never understand why.

#28Stand By Your Sidefrom the album One Heart (2003) One Heart is probably my least favorite album, but this was a standout track. HYEBIL did overshadow it on AC though.

#26Another Year Has Gone Byfrom the album These Are Special Times (1998) The Bryan Adams penned Christmas track. I'd rank it up there, but Don't Save it All For Christmas Day is my go-to from this album!

#25A New Day Has Comefrom the album A New Day Has Come (2002) I'm just really glad they did this mix for it, as the original was a bit drawn out. Its chart success kinda reminded me of To Love You More with the slow rise and fade. AC was obviously more accepting, 21 weeks at #1 there.

#24My Heart Will Go Onfrom the album Let's Talk About Love (1997) I guess this song was a blessing and a curse in one due to that. It's still a great song, however there are so many others I prefer.

#22Un garçon pas comme les autres (Ziggy)from the album Dion chante Plamondon (1991) Most people might not be here for Celine au français but it's where she got her start so those people aren't true Beliners. This is a single from her hit french album Dion chante Plamondon in which I always thought she looked like a feminine man on the cover. It was a #2 hit in France in 1993, nearly two years after the album's release. The album it come from sold 200,000 copies in Canada and over 100,000 in the US, which is pretty incredible considering it's a french record. The music video has a lot of very attractive guys and contains some pretty homoerotic imagery as Celine crushes on one of the guys on the football team. In the end, she kisses him but only after she dresses as one of the guys. The song itself is about a woman's infatuation for a gay man so considering the subject matter, the full male nudity (although strategically blocked) and the fact it's a Celine Dion song, it's pretty risque, especially for 1993. But then, it's also French. I would say the video is worth watching on its own but it's one of my early favourite Celine songs. UPDATE: I didn't know until reading the wiki page on the song but there was an english version recorded as well! Now THAT I would love to hear!

#22Un garçon pas comme les autres (Ziggy)from the album Dion chante Plamondon (1991) This is the cover for the U.S. version. I guess it's as controversial as Celine gets music-wise. The English version isn't as risque as the French version.

#21Miles To Go (Before I Sleep)from the album Let's Talk About Love (1997) The third song from Let's Talk About Love. I'll let you in on a hint, this album places 5 overall in the Top 30, one of two Celine albums to have that many each. This song was written and produced by Corey Hart, Mr. Sunglasses At Night. At the time, Corey had just come off of the success in Canada of his self-titled album in 1996 featuring hits Black Cloud Rain and Tell Me. Hart had two songs on Celine's album, Where Is The Love and this one. I particularly liked this song because while it was vintage Celine, it was unlike her others as she remained relatively soft-sung throughout this one, never really going above a vocal whisper. It was only a single in Canada and it did get radio airplay, peaking at #17 on Canadian AC, though the station I heard it on was a CHR.

I remember Corey opened for Celine back in '99 and he performed this song himself. I love the coupling of "Miles to Go" and "Us" they just flow so wonderfully.

Now it's time for the Top 20! #20I'm Your Angel with R. Kellyfrom the album These Are Special Times (1998) Just a few years before R. Kelly topped the charts with his own sexually charged hit Ignition and was met with some heavy alligations that came years after his apparent marriage to then-teenaged Aaliyah, he was dueting with the queen of soft pop, Celine Dion. This song was also the first Hot 100 #1 under the new change that included airplay mixed with sales for the first time (a few weeks later, Aaliyah herself would top the chart with an airplay-only single, I do believe.) I'm Your Angel is a sweet duet where both show off flawless vocals that worked as a double single from both Celine's holiday album and R. Kelly's R. double album. It wasn't a huge pop airplay hit, peaking at #21 but at this point in time, Celine wasn't relying on the airplay to deliver huge success. This song was a hit before it was even released. (for some reason, the music video isn't on YouTube ??? )
