Few people know this about me or realize it, considering my current tastes in music, but one of my first musical loves was Celine Dion. It stems from my sister's near obsession when we were both younger. Back when I was 10 until I was 12 or 13, Celine was my favourite singer. I inherited her albums (on cassette) from my sister, who had moved on to singer/songwriters like Jann Arden and Sarah McLachlan before the end of 1994. From then, I continued to get Celine albums until 2000 or so. I figured it would be fun to do my own chart on a singer who has a vast musical history and while I haven't cared for much of what she's released over the last ten years, I will still defend Celine when I feel it's appropriate. I don't think she's been the focus of any of these special artist-based charts yet which is another reason why I've chosen her. But I also think she's well-liked enough on Pulse that this might be a fun chart for people to follow. I'll be compiling the list and start posting in a day or so. PS: I'll be accepting comments of praise, thoughts or even those from non-fans and h8ers to post along with my list as I go. Feel free to PM me and send those along!

Another artist I've always wanted to check out so good choice imo. Should help me decide if I like her or not.

I've compiled my list! I spent the last several hours refreshing my memory on Celine Dion, old and new, classics and moderns. While the list contains mostly singles, there are some album tracks on there that I wouldn't feel right leaving out so for the true blue Celine fans, these are treats just for you. This list has rock 'n roll, crystal clear ice-breaking vocals, nostalgia, sass, chest banging, Disney cartoonery, male nudity and lots of controversy. Before I begin posting the list, which will start with #30 for the first update, I've included a few songs that came close to making it. There were plenty of songs that didn't make it, obviously, but these ones were serious contenders: |
Contender 1 Immortality [1997] from the album Let's Talk About Love
A #5 UK hit and #1 Canadian AC hit, this song features the Bee Gees and was one of the signature tunes from Celine's epic album Let's Talk About Love.
|
 |
Contender 2 Love Is On The Way [1997] from the album Let's Talk About Love
Another track from the same album, this worked as one of my favourite album tracks as it was never released as a single anywhere.
|
 |
Contender 3 The Power Of Love [1993] from the album The Colour Of My Love
The first single from Celine's third english album, this song became Celine's first Hot 100 #1 and was perhaps the beginning of her domination, even though her next big hit wouldn't come for another few years. Celine's cover of The Power Of Love marked a new beginning for her that turned her from a singer from Canada with a few hits into someone that was inevitably going to become something more. While this song is a clear classic, it's a little too "love song" for me and coming from someone who's making a whole chart of Celine Dion songs, that's saying a lot.
|
 |
Contender 4 Alone [2007] from the album Taking Chances
Some might say that Celine covering a classic 80s Heart hit is blasphemy. I probably won't disagree but since the song was written by Diane Warren, one of Celine's top go-to songwriters for most of her career, it gives her a pass to cover it (much like Meatloaf having a pass for covering It's All Coming Back To Me Now. It's only fair). The song isn't a bad cover by any means but it doesn't hold a candle to Heart's. Still, I couldn't leave without mentioning my appreciation for Celine updating it and reminding people of its existence. I didn't need reminding since Alone is one of my favourite songs from the 80s period.
|
 |
Contender 5 Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) [2002] from the album A New Day Has Come
It's not a classic by any means but this was still a nice song from Celine's "comeback" album of 2002. It served as the album's third single and has back-up vocals by Shania Twain - and production by Robert "Mutt" Lange.
|
I will start posting the chart tomorrow. I will likely do more than one song per day since otherwise it would take a whole month for me to do it and if you're like me, you probably can't wait that long to experience 20 years of Celine Dion!

#30Taking Chancesfrom the album Taking Chances (2007) The newest song on this list and the only entry from Celine's last English album that came out in 2007. Whenever I hear this song now, I can't help but think about chspchbi aka chbingeo aka johnm1120 complaining about Sony not "taking chances" on Celine and that's why it didn't do well. Personally, I think the song did pretty well considering Celine's image at the time. I don't disagree one bit with her label's promotion of her and her music. She just isn't a fit for Pop radio anymore. While pop music continues to move toward more risque artists, Celine has always remained wholesome. Although the music video to this song has her looking a bit more glamourous and modern than usual, it didn't translate into giving her a hit that elusive pop radio hit. Either way, I think it did well enough that it fits suitably in amongst her classics.

I think it would've been interesting to see how Taking Chances played out had they released songs like the more upbeat "Fade Away" and the HAC-friendly "Surprise Surprise," rather than "Alone," "Eyes On Me," and "My Love." She could have at least scored a hit or two on HAC had they picked more suitable singles, I think, but the friendly-only-to-AC fare didn't help. This is a good song despite that, though!

#29I Want You To Need Mefrom the album All The Way... A Decade Of Song (1999) The classic combo of Celine and Diane Warren. This was a single from her first Greatest Hits album that was half hits, half new songs - years before Matchbox Twenty did the same thing. While the album's planned second single was Then You Looked At Me, a song used in the Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man (which I did like, by the way, even though it flopped), it was this song that became the album's second AC hit. It was a classic formula that had worked for Celine for the entire decade prior to this release but I think by this point, it wasn't a sound that was in any longer. She had just scored a hit with the pop-flavoured Max Martin-produced That's The Way It Is so things were now suddenly different. Either way, Celine continued to deliver on her classic sound.

All The Way was the last Celine album I got so other than a few of the singles from Taking Chances, I never heard those ones before. I'd be curious to hear what 2007 Hot-AC Celine would sound like though. I might have to check out Surprise Surprise.

#30Taking Chancesfrom the album Taking Chances (2007) I knew CΓ©line before, obviously - I am Canadian - but I never loved her before "Taking Chances." Obviously I have gone back, now, and enjoy her much more than I once had. Great track. the only entry from Celine's last English album that came out in 2007. ... but, but Delta freaking Goodrem wrote "Eyes On Me!"

"Taking Chances" is a nice song "I Want You To Need Me" sounds good but nowhere near as great as "That's The Way It Is".

#28Stand By Your Sidefrom the album One Heart (2003) This was a little known single from One Heart, the album that seemed like it was building up to be something bigger than it actually was. It didn't do as well at AC as Celine songs tend to do but it became one of my favourites from her this decade. Written by the same songwriting team that came up with Cher's Believe, this one is much more of a ballad with a melting chorus perhaps like their other hits Enrique's Hero and If You're Not The One by Daniel Bedingfield.

I've been so into "The Reason" after hearing it live last month. You better re-visit that gem before you go any further.

#27I'm Alivefrom the album A New Day Has Come (2002) This song got a lot of help thanks to a furry little creature who was behind the creation of a brand new Chantal Kreviazuk song. The second single from A New Day Has Come also doubled as a single from the movie Stuart Little 2, which also housed soundtrack cuts from Mandy Moore and my then-favourite Chantal Kreviazuk (Another Small Adventure). I'm Alive also received a remix from the original album version for its radio release. The queen of soundtrack hits green-screened the video to perfection as she appears with Stuart himself in one version of the video. Made by the same people that helped out with That's The Way It Is, I'm Alive served as one of Celine's best from the last decade, peaking at #6 on Billboard's AC Chart, #1 on Canadian AC and #11 Hot 100 Bubbling Under.

#26Another Year Has Gone Byfrom the album These Are Special Times (1998) I wasn't going to initially include any Christmas songs on this list, mostly because I didn't consider it until I remembered that this one is one of my go-to songs every December. While I don't care for most of this album, it's not so much because of Celine herself but because Christmas music is perhaps the one time when I prefer the traditional classics. But this song was, I believe, one of the original tracks for the album and it excellently fuses classic Celine with her modern self.

Agreed that you'd better be showing some love to "The Reason" and ( toward the end) "It's All Coming Back To Me Now!"
