I noticed that the most "popular" song in the USA has sunk beneath the radio airwaves leaving barely a ripple.

Damn, this is gonna be really close between Bruno and Justin for new airplay #1. With the BDS different panel, we *could* see one of them #1 on Radio Songs this week. Next week for sure, though.

Looking back at the 15 year list, I can sing EVERY line of the top 5 airplay songs. There are 5 in the top 10 of the Hot 100 that I've never even heard of, and that's telling of the days when I would listen to the radio for hours.

Urban music was a huge genre for physical single sales between 1992-1999. That's why so many urban songs did so well without the help of big pop airplay.

Urban music's HOT 100 success was aided by record companies refusal to release singles for many of the pop and alternative hits between 1994 and 1998.
The mid to late 1990s was probably the HOT 100's low point in terms of relevancy.

1995-2004 was a "lost decade" for the Hot 100.

Its amazing how things turned around with the brisk sales of singles again. It is almost as if the culture changes the radio landscape as well.
I am petrified of "Album-Only" iTunes sales or Album only streaming trends in the future.

So basically it was always lost....HOT 100 had to change with the times. Pop radio didn't used to be a format like it is today. It used to be the most popular songs regardless of genre. Now artists actually have to do adds dates with pop radio and things like that instead of playing a record when its popular.

Urban radio airplay wasn't even counted until the very late 90s, despite how well urban singles sold in the 90s. Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" went Platinum all the way back in 1983 without CHR/Pop airplay. People love to complain about the dominance of urban music on the Hot 100 back in the early 00s when singles weren't selling but they never say a thing about how urban singles were hindered on the Hot 100 when urban airplay wasn't taken into consideration.
