I don't think anyone so far has meant any ill will with these comments, and sometimes race can be a relevant discussion point, but this just feels like a game of "let's make up some stereotypes" right now.

As HMP pointed out, it tends to be a pejorative term whether on Idol or not - the term in reference to Idol specifically derived from the fact that all those WGWGs were more or less just Idol's versions of the non-Idol guys that HMP listed. Like oh, it's another white guy with an acoustic guitar strumming bland MOR songs that appeal specifically to either bored housewives or drunk college-age Beckies at house parties (though at least in the latter case the guy at least also appeals to the drunk frat guys hosting the party). So he asked if the female equivalent was the white chick with piano playing MOR songs. Sarah McLachlan Vanessa Carlton, Norah Jones, Sara Bareilles, etc. It's been a minute since we had a prominent WCWP but the WGWG is seemingly omnipresent.

I've noticed that the WGWG term derides the fanbase of these types of guys more so than the guys themselves; the singer just gets the unfortunate blowback of the negative opinion by catering to said fanbase.

Alicia and John were r&b equivalents and it's interesting to note that they first came to fame during the height of r&b's popularity. Whether race is 'relevant' is debatable but I can't deny that I find it interesting to think about the ways in which stereotypes come into play when it comes to the artists that are marketed to us. Other than Alicia and John I actually don't recall any r&b artists who were known for playing any instrument aside from Prince, which makes one wonder why more urban artists don't try to tap into that appeal. Has the industry decided that certain niches are "too good" - or conversely, not good enough - to be trapped behind an instrument?

Interesting to see one year ago's chart. It seemed like we were coming to an end of the EDM & turbo pop era (Katy, Usher jumping on the bandwagon) and seemingly starting a new era of what ... maybe boy bands (Wanted, 1D), maybe neo-alternative rock (fun, Gotye).. the folk-pop trend of Phillips / Lumineers and Of Monsters hadn't really started yet.

So where are we now? Hip-Hop is creeping back in (in many ways thanks to the chart changes); Folk-pop seems in retrospect now like a one-off; The alternative rock trend morphed into just fun. having a string of hits; and word on the street is that JT's Suit & Tie is starting a mini-retro soul renaissance (Chris Brown - who is hot at urban / rhy, but has no room to experiment on pop). Be interesting to see what the next few months holds. As someone who has followed US chart history closely, it *feels* like we are in a pendulum swing period.

Digital Songs Update[/u]

Speaking of Mars, his single "When I Was Your Man" sails to No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart (up from No. 4 last week) with 340,000 downloads sold (up 45%). The song was sale-priced at both the iTunes and Amazon MP3 stores last week for $0.69, down from the standard $1.29 price of most current hits. It's the first week for "Man" at the top, and it follows Mars' last single, "Locked Out of Heaven," which spent three weeks at No. 1 in December and January.

Last week's Digital Songs No. 1, P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason" (featuring Nate Ruess), is pushed down to No. 2 with 280,000 (down 2%). As mentioned earlier, Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" flies 42-3 (248,000; up 372%).

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" (featuring Wanz) slides 2-4 (211,000; down 25%) while Rihanna's "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko) is steady at No. 5 (207,000; down 9%). Mackelmore and Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" (featuring Ray Dalton) jumps 9-6 (186,000; up 37%), and Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" dips 3-7 (163,000; down 31%).

Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" (featuring Jay-Z) descends 7-8 (145,000; down 21%), and Icona Pop's "I Love It" (featuring Charli XCX) hits the top 10 for the first time, climbing 11-9 with 131,000 (up 10%). It's the song's eighth straight weekly sales gain.

Closing the top 10 on Digital Songs this week is Pitbull's "Feel This Moment," featuring Christina Aguilera, falling 8-10 with 124,000 (down 18%).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 28.31 million downloads, up less than 1% compared with last week (28.30 million) and down 3% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (29.1 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 384.8 million, down 1% compared with the same total at this point last year (390.4 million).
