I know it's been tough to make predictions with much certainty since the inclusion of YouTube, but things are looking pretty good for Bruno, no? his airplay keeps growing as "Thrift Shop" plummets, and he's been No. 1 on iTunes since Tuesday thanks to the $0.69 discount. I'm not a massive fan of "When I Was Your Man", but I'm ready for a new No. 1. this is gonna be the April 20th chart, and we've only had 3 songs at No. 1 this year: "Locked Out Of Heaven" - 4 weeks (after 2 weeks in 2012) "Thrift Shop" - 4 weeks "Harlem Shake" - 5 weeks "Thrift Shop" - 2 weeks (and counting...) if we don't count LOOH (since it began its run at No. 1 in 2012), we've only had 2 songs reach No. 1 in 2013.... Doesn't 2005 hold the record for least #1s in a year? I wonder if we'll break that this year. It's the opposite in the UK. We sometimes get 30+ #1s in a year. I prefer it ths way, just because that's what I'm used to. I'm sure most of you would hate it if the Hot 100 #1 changed every 1-2 weeks. Although I remember there being a period where it was almost like the UK chart late 2010. it depends how you look at it. in 2002, 9 different songs spent time at No. 1, but 2 of those 9 songs ("How You Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad") first hit No. 1 in 2001. if you only count songs that first reached No. 1 in 2002, that year would hold the record with only 7 songs reaching No. 1. none of the No. 1 hits in 2005 were holdovers from 2004, and 8 songs reached the top that year. I'm thankful for the inclusion of YouTube, but I also think the Hot 100 is more fun to follow when the turnover rate at No. 1 is a bit quicker, so I hope the chart doesn't return to a turnover rate as slow as it had during those years...

I hope Cant Hold Us replaces Thrift Shop for #1 in the next couple of weeks, I don't want the same overrated artists getting #1 I think Can't Hold Us is bound to get #1, but it might take more than a couple of weeks to get there. I don't mind Bruno getting a couple of weeks inbetween really, it's not such a big deal imo (and as the poster above was saying, we could do with a slightly faster turnover of #1s right now). I'm so happy that Can't Hold Us is doing well. It's much like the hip hop songs that were popular when I was younger. I remember only 12 months ago Nicki Minaj fans saying that Nicki HAS to release dance-pop songs, as there's no way a hip hop song will do anything in the charts. But now we've got loads doing well, Macklemore, Drake, Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky. Now would be a good time for people like Eminem and Kanye West to release new music, they could realistically get #1 on the Hot 100, especially since they're both monsters on streaming, and pop radio is getting more open-minded about the music it plays recently.

I think Bruno's going to take it, then hopefully P!nk will sneak a week or two in, and then "Can't Hold Us." "Mirrors" might be a challenge later down the road as well.

I was just kidding around. I mean, the answer is in the term. A piano ballad is a ballad that is primarily piano driven.

it can't have a beat, otherwise it's a downtempo.

Not only was "Someone Like You" the last piano ballad to hit #1, I seem to remember it's the ONLY time a song went to #1 consisting of only a vocal and a piano.

Surprisingly it has been the only song to hit #1 in the history of the HOT 100 that consisted of just a piano and the singer's voice. It is the only #1 song that can be called a piano ballad (as opposed to a ballad which has other instruments as well as the piano). "Stay" and I believe "When I Was Your Man" are also piano ballads.

Stay actually has other instruments in it than a piano, if you listen closely to it.
However, I don't think songs have to be pure piano and vocals to be a piano ballad. Songs like Jar of Heart by Christina Perri, Stay by Rihanna, Turning Tables by Adele, Empire State of Mind Part II by Alicia Keys, etc. which have additional instrumentation, I would still consider piano ballads. I don't think a few strings during the chorus or a drum hit every 8 bars would stop it being a piano ballad.
But something like Take a Bow by Rihanna, whilst it is piano led and definitely a ballad, probably has too much percussion to be a proper piano ballad.

Is "white girl with piano" the distaff equivalent to "white guy with acoustic guitar", as some have suggested?

Is "white girl with piano" the distaff equivalent to "white guy with acoustic guitar", as some have suggested? As far as I know the concept of "white guy with acoustic guitar" is only used in the context of American Idol (David Cook, Kris Allen, Phillip Phillips), which has nothing to do with "white girl with piano". Moreover, for me there's nothing to notice about the concept you suggested.

Why do people keep adding race to these discussions? People like Alicia Keys and John Legend have also been known to be just them and the piano.
I don't think anyone so far has meant any ill will with these comments, and sometimes race can be a relevant discussion point, but this just feels like a game of "let's make up some stereotypes" right now.

Moreover, for me there's nothing to notice about the concept you suggested. I've seen "white guy with acoustic guitar" used to describe artists who aren't associated with AI, including Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, the Plain White T's and, to some extent, John Mayer. I think it's meant more pejoratively when it's used to describe them, though.

True talent mr Worldwide! :'( There's a difference between "dance" and "club" music. Started From the Bottom, Harlem Shake, Suit & Tie and Thrift Shop are bigger in clubs than Feel This Moment from my experience (I haven't actually heard Feel This Moment in a club yet infact). This is in the UK though, perhaps clubs play different music in the US. But it's true Pitbull has the only dance-pop song in the top 10 now!
