I'm really pulling for another hit for David. He has my favourite male voice out right now, and his last album deserved to be huge. Come on, David!!!!

He's never sold any records and his singles don't download - that's 2 strikes against him already. Now this new first single off a new record is kind of ho hum for me. Obviously David Nail has one of the greatest voices in country - he could sing the phone book and make it sound like a hit. He gets points for trying something new, but this new tune is a little too juvenile for him. Couple that with David's abrasive personality that has pissed off just about everyone in the business and then add a ridiculous new haircut on top - and he might be done.

I'm a big fan of his music, and think this song is really catchy, but something didn't sit quite right -- I think you hit it on the head with "juvenile." Either way, I'm hoping it does well. Also I'm sad to hear about his negative reputation. Seeing interviews with him, he does seem to have a chip on his shoulder -- although maybe I would too if I had his amazing voice and watched less superior singers climb higher on the charts. Still, I would think having a bad attitude wouldn't necessarily be a career-killer (considering what I've read about Eric Church, although he seems to have softened in later years).

Pissed off everyone in the business? Where did you hear that? In any case, the dude's immensely talented. This seems like a great summer song. If radio gives it a chance, it could really soar.

I can't link to it because Radio-Info didn't archive copies of Phyllis Stark's column, but in her January 2012 "Anatomy of a Hit" column, Stark covered the story of how David Nail's "Let It Rain" become a #1 hit. She mentioned in her column, I believe from a member of MCA Nashville's promotion department, that in order to allay a negative impression David may have left on some radio programmers based on what may have been taken as a standoffish personality early on in his career, the label sent him out on a radio tour that enabled programmers to get to know him a little better. The take home seemed to be that this worked, and facilitated "Let It Rain's" climb to #1. I really wish I could provide a link or at least quote the original text because I dislike delving into topics like this without sourcing that everyone can assess for themselves. In any event, "Whatever She's Got" has a catchy enough melody and David Nail can't help but stand out as a vocalist. The lyrics are unremarkable, though, he follows most of his peers is playing considerably younger than he is, and I don't like the way the background vocals occasionally compete with his voice. Looking at the subset of midtempo groove-based summer romance singles that have been sent country radio's way in the last couple of months (for example, "It Goes Like This," "See You Tonight," and "Little Bit of Everything"), "Whatever She's Got" is probably the one I like the most. I hope that it cuts through.

I hope that it cuts through. To David's credit, he's worked REALLY hard at curing that 'abrasive' reputation he got early on. He's not so much of a Diva now, having a few miss hits has helped that. As for his single's success that others mentioned. His two biggest hits DID Sell. They have sold between 500,000 and 1,000,000 copies. For a C-level artist, that's not bad at all.

I think it was less that he's a diva and more that he didn't believe a word out of anyone's mouth until anything actually became a reality. You could tell the b.s. with his shelved debut jaded him on the entire business.

I don't remember David being remotely abrasive when I saw him in concert around the time Red Light was a Top 10er.

David Nail is one of my very favorite male vocalists in the genre and he never disappoints, and he definitely delivers again with this one. This song has a really enjoyable melody and the summery vibe should serve him well on the charts to make this his third major hit. His vocals are, as usual, in fine form here and I actually like the direction he went for this release, because it's pleasing for radio but without him selling out in any way since this is still a great song. Hopefully his forthcoming album is his biggest era yet and he actually manages to maintain his success with subsequent singles while also mustering up some better album sales this time around.

David joked around at CMA Fest about he knows that people always think he sings about depressing music, but now $20 a month at Walgreens has solved that problem, haha.
Then he performed this song. So I don't know if that means his new album will have more uptempo, fun songs, but it could mean that.

I wouldn't mind more songs like this from David at all, but I loved his first two records as well, so I'd love a happy medium of both on this upcoming album. Really though, this song proves to me that he's really versatile and capable of doing almost anything to good results, and that even this song still fits in his catalog (like, it doesn't seem like this song is a total 180 or anything, except maybe that topically it's "happier" -- sonically though it fits right in pretty well imo).

I believe this is on iTunes now. Also, other David Nail news:
» Summer On The Barbie: UMG Nashville is offering the two-hour Backyard Barbecue Fourth Of July Radio Special hosted by David Nail. The show features patriotic, summer-themed music with appearances by Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban, Eric Church, Darius Rucker, George Strait, Gary Allan, Dierks Bentley and Billy Currington, among others. The clearance window is June 29-July 5.

This song is really catching on with me. There is no doubt he is one of the genre's better vocalists. I still think Nail, Joe Nichols, Randy Houser and Ronnie Dunn have the best voices. I especially liked Nail's "Sound of a Million Dreams", to me, Songs for Sale was a can't-miss-hit. So disappointed the label didn't release that. In any case, depressing or not, I will still buy the album, and I hope this song finds a home in the Top 20 or even Top 10. He deserves it

I had his first two CD's on repeat in my car for months. Sound of a Million Dreams still gives me chills on the last chorus, and the fact it flopped on radio makes me pretty pissed at the whole radio system.

Radio politics suck and rob artists like him of the mega success they deserve!! Btw, the girls in that music vid = dayum!

This song is really catching on. Just 6 days ago, in the August 18th Mediabase update, its bullet was only 37 and it posted a -38k loss in audience in that update. But here's a look at its updates since then:
8/18: +8 spins, -37k audience 8/19: +12 spins, +122k AI's 8/20: +42 spins, +450k AI's (and +3 spots on MB to #40) 8/21: +39 spins, +376k AI's (#39 MB) 8/22: +1 spin, +354k AI's 8/23: +43 spins, +632k AI's
(and the current bullet is +156)
That's a huge week for a song only on the cusp of the top 40, especially considering that David's chart runs usually always start out fairly slowly (and WSG has been no different). Now, that +1 spin update on 8/22 coupled with the big audience gain leads me to believe that a good chunk of this audience might be coming from Dial Global spins (and therefore won't translate to Billboard), but the DG Mainstream Country playlist is currently offline on AllAccess (this happens from time to time). Still, David will get countdown spins in just over a week from now, thanks to his moves this week.
I've also noticed that WSG has been much higher on iTunes than just about all other non-top 30 radio hits right now, and so I've been thinking for a few wees now that this one would catch on pretty soon and really start to move up. Even if some of the gains are inflated by Dial Global numbers, I do think that what we are seeing now may be WSG starting to get solid traction at radio.

This song is really catching on. I've been thinking the same thing... his gains this week have been huge. I also heard the song on my local station a few days ago, and it sounds really great on the radio. The style of "Whatever She's Got" reminds me a little bit of a Keith Urban type single. It's really catchy, and I think it could turn out to be a big hit for David.

The instruments are given room to breath and David sounds good when you can hear him properly.
That's about it. Heavy background vocals are prominent gear (one of my biggest pet peeves) and the lyrics are very "meh".

So what's the story with this song? Is it "too good" to play on the radio? I say that sarcastically but really this needs to catch on in a big way. I mean it seems like it is still slowly moving up the chart, but I was expecting a bit more than the paltry 0.7m-0.8m increases a week. Must be that banjo instrument you hear in the song :)

This one's doing pretty well. It continues to sell better than most of the songs with similar airplay numbers, and it's been getting quite a few adds per week. I would say we are, in fact, watching this one catch on at this very moment. It jumped 6 places on the new Billboard chart, from 37-31, and gained almost 1.4 million in audience last week.
It's burned through quite a few weeks, but this is David Nail...I think this one will be a big hit in 2014.

Did someone perform this on The Voice or Nashville or something? It's shot up to #5 on iTunes country, trailing only "That's My Kind Of Night", "It Goes Like This", "Mine Would Be You", and "Night Train"... :O
I mean, it's been selling well, but not this well. It's the full $1.29 in price, too.
