I'm really glad this is starting to blow up. David Nail's chart climbs are always painfully slow, but thankfully it looks like he'll continue his trend of at least having one successful hit to start each album era. I'd love for whatever follows this to do well though and for him to eventually see some sort of a breakthrough. He's definitely my favorite male vocalist on country radio, second only to Josh Turner.

This had been hovering in the 25-30 range on iTunes, then suddenly it was #5...songs don't just move up like that unless they got exposure somewhere (TV performance, commercial, etc) or if the price gets cut in half...no one knows if anything happened with this one?

It was definitely not on Nashville or The Voice. I can't speak to X-factor since I don't watch it.

I just can't stand our St Louis country stations. One is owned by Clear Channel, and speeds up their music, hence raising it a half pitch. I refuse to listen. The other station plays the same crap over and over, and I haven't heard David played ONCE yet. He's a freaking Missourian! At least play his song once a day! Sweet Jeezus. If I hear "catfish dinner" or "hey girl" again, I'm gonna slit my wrists.
Sorry for my rant. David's my favorite country artist right now, and his lack of airplay in his home state is disappointing.

I've been living in St. Louis for a little over a month now and radio is terrible here. I feel like I never hear anything good. Kansas City is the opposite; they play a lot of good music, and there's even one station that plays half older (mostly 80s and 90s) stuff and half newer stuff, so I hear Patty Loveless, Deana Carter, Pam Tillis, etc. I heard this song a fair bit back home. I miss my country radio.

St. Louis here too and totally agree our two stations are horrible, although I have heard at least one of them play Whatever She's Got (Davis is my favorite male vocalist, too). See if you can tune in 98.5. It's a station from Farmington, MO that plays a nice variety. When I grew up across the river in IL, I could get WSMI 106.1 from Carlinville, IL and that was THE BEST radio station. There is NOTHING better than a small town radio station.

I'll have to check into that. I just know that I've come across the two you mention, which I believe are both right next to each other in the lower 90s when I'm flipping through, and I definitely have not really enjoyed listening to either of them much since I've been here. I get three country stations back home in Kansas City, and I honestly think all of them are pretty solid. One of the biggest two frequently played "Better" by Maggie Rose and for that alone I loved it. My favorite one is the one that plays a variety of older and newer stuff; I love that station.

Info on his next album, "I'm a Fire." From www.fusionmusicmgmt.com/david-nail/ But David prevailed, and he credits his revitalization to his wife Catherine. “I have this newfound happiness, energy and enthusiasm about life,” he says. “And the sole inspiration for why I wanted to get better, to change and to be different was because of her.” Now, David has taken that refreshed mindset and used it to shape his trail-blazing third album, I’m a Fire. If 2009’s I’m About to Come Alive was a snapshot of David grasping for the stars and The Sound of a Million Dreams captured him struggling with success, then I’m a Fire reflects an artist in control of his craft, a man fulfilled. The album’s 11 tracks, four of which were written by the Missouri native, capture, for the first time, the energy of his live performance. “It is a much more upbeat album than I’ve done in the past,” he says. “Having spent so much time on the road, I think I have a better idea of the type of songs people gravitate toward in a live setting.” But turning in a more up-tempo album after a career of sober material is a challenge, as well as a departure that could take longtime fans by surprise. “I think my records have been very much who I was at that place and time, and I think people can say, ‘Man, you sing all these sad songs and there is a lot of heartache,’” David admits. “But I’m a Fire came out of a pure place of doing something that we simply enjoy.” David cites the spontaneous nature of cuts like the album’s lead single, “Whatever She’s Got,” a favorite of wife Catherine. “I always believed the song was special, but when my wife first heard it, I watched her start to dance and move around. I thought to myself, ‘I’ve never seen my wife move like that before.’ I instantly knew we had something with ‘Whatever She’s Got,’” he says. Indeed, it’s hard to sit still when listening to the breezy jam, perhaps the hookiest love song to be recorded in the past 10 years. “From the first moment I heard it, I thought this would sound amazing on radio,” David says. “It has a melody that you can’t get out of your head.” Tracks like “Broke My Heart,” “Burnin’ Bed” and “Lyle County” are similarly infectious, all with deliberate grooves that carry the listener along. “Broke My Heart” has the vibe of a Tom Petty song, “Burnin’ Bed” features a unique staccato delivery from David in its verses, and “Lyle County” boasts sublime harmonies from special guests Little Big Town. “Lyle County” is full of the nostalgic imagery at which David excels. “I thought I was finished with the idea of reflecting on life’s glory days, but there’s something very beautiful and pure about those times. I’m a sucker for those types of songs,” he laughs. Interestingly, while The Sound of a Million Dreams featured a prominent piano sound, I’m a Fire contains few ivory notes. It’s very much a guitar record with, naturally for David, an emphasis on vocals. The ACM Award-nominated singer’s voice is without peer. To some, he is country music’s Adele, and even covered the British chanteuse’s “Someone Like You” on his 1979 EP to mainstream praise. But, while David may have eschewed the piano ballads of influences like Elton John on I’m a Fire, he did make a point to pay tribute to one of his heroes, Glen Campbell. He closes out the album with his version of Campbell’s classic “Galveston,” with help from Lee Ann Womack, who also appeared on The Sound of a Million Dreams. Like much of I’m a Fire, produced by David’s faithful collaborator Frank Liddell, the inclusion of “Galveston” was born out of spontaneity. “It was very spur of the moment,” David says. “While it was important to me to pay respect to the song, I wanted to do it how I would do it. And I wanted Lee Ann to be a part of it.” In the end, however, it’s the track “I’m a Fire” that may best define the album and David’s view on where he is in his personal life. “There’s so many moments on this record that make me think about the last four years that I’ve been married, and ‘I’m a Fire’ just sums it all up,” David says. “It says, ‘I’ve walked through flames, come out on the other end, and the foremost reason is because of you.’” It’s a heavy statement, one that carries the weight of not only a romance, but of a career. But for David Nail, an artist who wears emotion as a badge of honor, that’s the only kind of statement he can make. And he declares it loud and clear on I’m a Fire.

Boy, David Nail just loves having methodical slow climbs till the top 25 or so then exploding doesn't he. To be fair this wont be quite as long as "Red Light" and "Let It Rain". But I'd be shocked if this missed a top 5 finish. It jumped to # 20 from # 26 this week on Mediabase, and is up over 400 spins in the last 7 days as well. "Whatever She's Got" is probably grown on me more than any other song out right now. The subject is so played but David's soulful voice and delivery makes this always a welcome listen to in the car. The production might be just a tad over the top but that's not that big of an issue to me like some others. I still though like David's slower ballads best ("I'm About To Come Alive", "The Sound Of A Million Dreams" both should have been huge impactful hits IMO). Still have a difficult time getting rid of that "I Want, I Want, I Want, I Want, I Want" out of my head. But as long as it keeps "Other" songs out of my head that's ok by me.

Top 10 on Mediabase with a bullet of over 400...this song is on fire! Definitely looks like a future #1 to me, probably sometime in February, just in time for his album to hit stores.

Hands down, the most deserving male Country artist of a breakthrough. Here's hoping this album does just that.

Up over 100 spins with a gain of 1.2 million on Mediabase today. This one, along with Cole's "Chillin' It", is absolutely flying. It'll be interesting to see if both songs can stay ahead of Luke. I have no doubt that all 3 of them will spend time at #1...I'm just wondering about the order. The Band Perry, Eric Paslay, and Cassadee Pope will have a much harder chance at getting to #1 based off the success that David, Cole, and Luke are seeing.

At this rate, David's record label may have to move up the release of his album if they want this single to be getting its peak airplay the week the album comes out. Right now, it hits stores February 25, and at this rate "Whatever She's Got" will probably be #1 by early February, since it's already in the top 10 and now seems to be gaining more daily airplay than the songs from Cole Swindell and Luke Bryan. Cole still hasn't announced an album release date, which is a bit strange considering WMN artists Brett Eldredge and Frankie Ballard announced their album release dates well in advance. I'm not sure how this is going to work out exactly, but right now it seems that David will move through the top 10 way too quickly to hang around for two over months.

In looking at the charts (specifically FGL, ZBB, TBP, & Cole Swindell), and bearing in mind the Christmas 'break', I think Feb 25 is right on the money.

I think this is probably in line to peak early/mid February, but in terms of peak airplay vs. album sales, it all seems pretty trivial. Whether this is sitting at #1 or just starting to decline (maybe around #4 or so) isn't going to affect sales at all. The February 25 date looks fine.

jhomes87 is right about airplay not having much effect on the album sales, but at the rate this is gaining, I think it would have to majorly slam on the breaks in order to hold out until February 25. It's the top gainer on Mediabase so far this week and has been gaining over a million AIs a day. This looks like it'll definitely come out ahead of Cole Swindell and Luke Bryan and the song could even pass Eric Paslay before "Friday Night" peaks. Next week should be a flat week because I suspect a lot of extra airplay will be going to Christmas songs (most likely the pathetic material released by the Robertson clan a few weeks ago >:( ), but at this rate David could be #1 by the end of January, unless both "Radio" and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" get pushed to #1 (which seems unlikely given their low sales and struggle over the recent few weeks), but otherwise I don't see there being a whole lot of songs ahead of "Whatever She's Got" that are in line for #1 and will manage to get there first. This is turning out to be a really big hit, and I think MCA might want to milk it as much as possible by getting it to #1 as quickly as they can so they can push for multiple weeks at the top without having to deal with photo finish competition from "Chillin' It" and "Drink a Beer." I'm happy that David Nail finally seems to be making a big impact, so even though this particular song of his isn't among my favorites, I wouldn't mind seeing it get two or more weeks at #1 and now this possibility is starting to seem very likely.

Country No.1 David Nail Whatever She's Got +1141 Eli Young Band Dust Probably doesn't mean much, this early in the week, but thanks for posting. David is at #6 on Mediabase this morning, but the #3 through #6 (Luke, Cole, Eric Paslay, & David) are all very close in audience. I suppose one of the newer guys could try to sneak in a week at #1 before Luke, but given his big spins lead, I don't think it's all that likely. I think we will see higher audience numbers return for the top 5 songs, as I expect Luke to get 2-3 weeks minimum at #1, and David can probably hold off on peaking for at least 3-4 weeks or so (that would get him closer to the album release as well). Zac Brown Band posted a small gain today, but I have my doubts that "Sweet Annie" will hang on for a 2nd week at #1, and of course #2 The Band Perry has bowed out of the race. I think both Cole and David can sneak in a week at #1 at some point, but I don't think Eric Paslay will quite make it all the way to the top (maybe a #3 peak for him?)

^Paslay is co-hosting Lon Helton's countdown this weekend. I know that isn't a surefire guarantee that next week is his final push week, but I think it's safe to say he'll be peaking pretty soon, probably at #4 on Mediabase and we'll see where he stands on BB when the charts come out tonight.
I'm not surprised this song is #1 on the Billboard RTT. David has a much better Billboard conversion ratio and last week, he was ahead of both Cole Swindell and Luke Bryan on Billboard and behind those two on Mediabase. I wonder if MCA is trying to focus on the Billboard panel before Luke Bryan gets to #1 since it's harder to unseat a song from #1 on Billboard than it is to jump ahead in Mediabase points for a few days.

I'm not surprised this song is #1 on the Billboard RTT. David has a much better Billboard conversion ratio and last week, he was ahead of both Cole Swindell and Luke Bryan on Billboard and behind those two on Mediabase. Oh, I'm not surprised this is #1 on RTT either. That's a building chart (I think? I get confused sometimes...but the way I understand it is that the RTT resets all songs to 0 at midnight Sunday, and then they add on to their totals each day). So it just means that David scored more airplay on Monday than Luke did (and I'd bet the margin between the 2 was very, very small). WSG is essentially trending at #1, but it's hard to count 1 day as a trend. I was thinking David could wait 3-4 weeks and peak in late February (and this line of thought was evident from my last post in this thread, lol), but his label might just go for it now. As you said, David was ahead on Billboard, and he remains ahead on tonight's chart, as WSG shoots from 7-3. Even more impressive is Luke's 9-4 surge. Their Billboard gains were almost identical for the week. Luke is, of course, ahead on Mediabase, but probably not by much (in terms of points). The deficit between the two songs on Billboard is very small, with David ahead by just 265k, although Luke has nearly 400 more spins than David does (not that spins matter to BB's ranking method, but still). David is only 2 million behind the ZBB, and I have a hunch that both the ZBB and TBP are going to be falling pretty hard this week. Eric Paslay is 2 million behind David and Luke, but Cole Swindell is within 500k of Luke. Very tightly packed, indeed. I still don't think Eric Paslay will manage to get much higher than #3 or #4, but if his label can muster up a big enough push, it wouldn't be a stretch for him to shoot from 7-1 this week. He's only 4 million behind the ZBB, after all. But again, I don't think that's very likely. No "power up for #1" ads in tonight's BCU for either David or Luke (perhaps there will be a clue in CAW). EMI has had "power up" ads for Paslay in the daily Aircheck emails, but that's all we've seen so far.

Jumps 7-3 on Billboard and stays ahead of Luke. With TBP and ZBB both falling, its no wonder David showed up at #1 on RTT. I'd love for David to get to #1 before Luke to ensure a week for David because who knows if he would hold out 2-3 for Luke.

I would love to see this on #1 as I like David Nail, but as you all mentioned that Luke's song is huge and might block even the other songs around it.I'll just hope it can sneak in. Quite interesting to see how this week will go.

Even though David was tracking #1 for the first 2 days of the week, I didn't see how he'd be able to hang on and hit #1 on Billboard. Luke's Mediabase gains for the first 2 days of the week had been slightly bigger than David's, and they were virtually neck and neck on Billboard coming into the week. But the Thursday Mediabase update makes it definitely look like David's team is pushing for the Billboard #1 (I'll get to Mediabase in a minute). "Whatever She's Got" gained a whopping 107 spins on Wednesday, with an AI gain of 784k, whereas Luke was up 40 spins and 513k.
The problem that David is facing on Mediabase is that their points system relies heavily on the number of spins...and while David did out-gain Luke by a lot in the most recent update, Luke is still ahead of him by more than 400 total spins. Perhaps if David could whittle that lead down to 200 or so he would have a fighting chance for the Mediabase #1. Right now I think Luke will hold him off there, but it does look like David is the favorite to land at #1 on Billboard. EYB's "Drunk Last Night" was a Billboard-only #1, right? Aside from that, I don't remember the last time it happened. David might do it here.

I'm assuming this is today's update, forgive me if its not:
4 1 Up this week LUKE BRYAN Drink A Beer 6787 6409 378 54.471 7 2 Up this week DAVID NAIL Whatever She's Got 6503 5992 511 53.916
But it looks like David is inching even closer. The spin gap is now only 284 and AIs are only .555. David may be able to steal both charts over the weekend.

Should be an interesting weekend watching how this plays out!

Nothing against David Nail or his label MCA, I do NOT like the points system that Mediabase has in place, think it's not fair that even David is still tracking #1 on Billboard which is okay as he is more then likely in the lead with audience but now on Mediabase, I think it's stupid that he is still behind on spins and audience but yet is #1 now even though he trails both on spins and audience to Luke but oh ya it's because of the stupid more points reward. I don't like it and I still think Billboard is better, not perfect, but better. If it weren't for points right now, David would be #2 in my book while Luke would be #1 but it is looking more and more like that David will top this weekend's charts on both Billboard and Mediabase. I expect if this happens then MCA will drop support and the song will fall hard next week with Luke taking over for one week before Cole takes over the following week.
This week's chart prediction for #1 on both: David- BB, David, MB Next week's chart prediction for #1 on both: Luke- BB, Luke, MB 2 week's from now chart prediction for #1 on both: Cole- BB, Eric- MB *I still think Eric may hit #1 for Mediabase, but will come up short on Billboard. I think Cole will top Billboard in 3 weeks from now but honestly it's too early to tell, but I think this is how this the next couple of weeks may play out.
